We stayed here for three nights as we were in town for a family wedding, and it was an overall positive experience.

The inn is in a good location for accessing Lancaster - we walked from the train station in less than 10 minutes.

The staff were generally friendly and welcoming, check-in was smooth and easy, even though we arrived late.

Breakfast is included in the room price and it was a choice of continental or cooked. The breakfast food was good, but not amazing. However, some of our party had an evening meal, which they said was very nice. We ate out in the central courtyard which is lovely when the weather is nice.

Our room was a good size and the bed was super comfy. There were good tea and coffee making facilities and fresh milk and cold water available from the bar. WIFI was fast enough for me to do some work which we were staying.

However, what was really strange in an otherwise good stay is that the bathroom wasn’t in good repair at all. While the shower was lovely and powerful, there was black mould on the ceiling and around the shower screen, the shower leaked onto the floor, the bath plug didn’t work (the water drained as you were lying there), the toilet seat moved around and the toilet roll holder was wobbly.

None of these things were disasters in themselves but just out of keeping with the rest of the experience, which was good. When I mentioned it to the staff member who checked us out, he was quite defensive and didn’t apologise, but said he’d take a look.

Nonetheless we would stay here again when visiting Lancaster as the pluses defo outweighed the bathroom issues!

I have stayed in many hotels that charge much, much more than this place but rarely found anywhere that gets it as right as the Toll House Inn does.
Firstly, the room was really nice and has, I think, been recently refurbished. Whoever is responsible for the design and the detailing deserves a bonus, it addressed all of my usual, nit-picking gripes I have about hotel bedrooms. It was large, air conditioned, well lit, had plenty of electrical sockets, many with built in USB chargers, well sound proofed and with a huge, comfy bed. The bathroom had THE best shower I have ever had in a hotel.
Secondly the food was excellent. A big step up from standard pub grub. Lamb with sweetbreads and anchovies was amazing, as was the pineapple three ways—cake, with chilli(!) and roasted. Lovely to see a chef pushing the boundaries.
Lastly, and most importantly, the staff were brilliant. When I complained that many hotels fail to supply Marmite at breakfast, one of the waitresses slipped me a few extra pots as she knew we were touring.
I hope you can see that I rate this hotel very highly. Go visit now, you will have fun.

Great staff who tried very hard to make us welcome and safe. The hotel was clean with very welcome aircon in the room which was very necessary in the 30c heat . With Covid restrictions it would have been nice to get a few notes of we could expect as we had no knowledge that rooms would not be cleaned during our stay.
Some design issues especially the tap and shower system which was overly complicated to use. Also the bedside lamps were huge and left no room for books etc.
Parking is not cheap costing £9.00 a day in the car park across busy and fast roads where we were never comfortable crossing especially the ones without lights.
Great soundproofing in the rooms meant we slept very well.

I've never asked to move rooms because of poor housekeeping but I did at the Toll House Inn - very disappointing, especially at this time. It wasn't just slightly dirty: I could run a finger through dust in various parts of the room, there was a leaky pipe underneath the floorboards in the bathroom that was seeping brown liquid and the bathroom smelt damp. The corridors and stairs were dirty, with frayed carpet and stains everywhere. The manager himself had to clean the rooms we were moved to, which implied to me that they weren't up to scratch either. It was handled well, with £15 taken off the bill, but this didn't amount to much as we had two rooms and dinner at £276 even with the discount.
The pub is on a very busy junction and traffic noise was obvious in the early hours of the morning, plus the bed we were moved to creaked at every turn so we had a sleepless night. An extra special treat was the evil eye from the three cleaners waiting outside our room when we left - avoid this place if you can.

We stayed here for two night between Christmas and New year, The building bar and dining area looks lovely with a good atmosphere. The staff all friendly and helpful. Check in quick and hassle free, car parking was in a public car park across a busy junction (£9 for a 24hr period).
The bedroom was medium in size with good decor and an en-suite which although large enough was a little grubby in the shower area and had a strong smell of mold but only a little visible. The extractor fan would start as soon as the light was turned on and would continue long after exiting the room ( very annoying when trying to get to sleep).
The evening meal had some good and bad elements to it. Had a good quantity on the plate and looked nice but the quality was lower than we had expected. The management did take this on board and deduct some items off the food bill. The breakfast on the other hand was a real pleasure.

Fabulous service- from the ease of booking, all the way through to checking out. The room was spotless with very comfy beds and a great shower . The surprise was the variety on the menu- we had 3 courses and were delighted with all the food. Restaurant service was superb with dishes arriving quickly and well presented. The additional Covid secure precautions were thorough and in no way disruptive or distracting- milk in a flask and beverages and biscuits taken up to the room ourselves. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We will definitely stay and eat here again and will recommend to friends.

Stayed one night on a stopover from Scotland to Southwest, we were going to book a chain hotel but this was much nicer and actually about same price since breakfast was included in room price. Staff very friendly and efficient, the room was very clean and pleasant, breakfast was great and the bed so comfy. It all felt very well organised and welcoming - even though we got there quite late (thank you!). Like a previous reviewer we appreciated the little things like real milk for your tea in the room. No concerns at all about post-lockdown hygiene. Only thing for future I would have checked about parking in advance because we got there late at night - we got a space at the back just across the courtyard which was great but I don’t know Lancaster and where there’s parking nearby if these spaces are full.

Wife and I stayed at this lovely hotel for a couple of nights.

Proficient and welcoming check in staff.

Room a little spartan but perfectly adequate with everything you'd need and clean as a whistle. AC worked very well, unlike many places where it's out-of-date, too hot, too cold etc so that was welcoming during a cold spell. Bed very comfy with good quality sheets. Breakfast was included and a lovely selection, esp hot food, and prepared beautifully and ever so tasty! The smoked salmon with eggs benedict being the clear favourite but the full English was also excellent.

We also enjoyed dinner on our first night. We took advantage of their £40 set menu (2 courses, £30 if you just want a main) for two with bottle of wine and we couldn't believe the value for money - food was delicious and a varied menu....something for everyone. We thoroughly enjoyed dinner and in a modern dining area with traditional features. The building itself is beautiful.

We'll be returning to Lancaster for work again soon and will look no where else but to stay at the Toll House Inn.

Sleep is central to a good hotel experience. Get enough of it and you’ve basically achieved what you wanted, don’t get enough and you might as well have slept rough and saved some pennies.

The pillows in the Toll House were so spongy as to leave my head in a horrible angle all night, rendering sleep very fitful. Despite there being two pillows, both were just a few cm thick when compressed by the weight of my head – useless.

There were other, potentially serious, problems. Firstly the stale milk, both in my room and at breakfast. This was totally unacceptable, as everyone knows about food hygiene standards nowadays. If that wasn’t enough, the room was on the cramped side, my egg’s benedict has no butter and the waitresses forgot my orange juice. Oh and I had to ask for the complimentary coffee to be placed in my room(with food). How can you charge £80/night for a room and not even provide the free drinks?! Unbelievable! Oh and did I mention the dirty toilet? (See photo.)

So while the interior of this place was good, and the location commendable, I was let down in far too many other areas. Disappointing.

Stayed again in run up to Christmas. As someone has said it is an old building but has been very tastefully modernised, bedrooms very comfortable. We had Dinner here which was very good & I love the breakfast as the main hot meal is served to you - no lukewarm buffet here! Staff are very friendly & helpful. Very limited parking if in a car but only 10 minutes walk from Rail Station and major bus stops from Preston/Blackpool literally across the road.
