Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Called in a few times lately as we are locals. A great atmosphere the new owners are creating, as this pub has been souless in the past. Last week we noticed a couple of ladies Christmas parties going on, and they had nothing but praise for the establishment. Well done on revamping the venue and bringing some soul to a good old English pub. Keep up the good work. 👍

This is honestly the most disgusting place I have ever stayed. Me and some friends stayed for one night to attend the races. Had it not have been a special event for my friend, I would’ve complained the second we arrived. However we had an hour to get ready and leave. The room myself and a friend were given was vile and guests shouldn’t be allowed to stay in it. The entire room stank of smoke and was stained brown, from the walls to the iron bed and the wardrobe- someone had clearly been chain smoking in it for some time. It was so bad that we opened the window wide open from the start of our stay at 3pm and kept it open when we left at 4pm. We returned at 11:30pm and the smell was so bad that 7 hours with the window wide open hadn’t helped at all. it was still difficult to breathe in. We both woke up multiple times in the night not being able to breathe (I’m asthmatic) and decided to pack up and leave at 7am. On top of this, the beds were awful, the wardrobe stank of smoke, the bathroom vinyl had a huge hole in it, the sink was smashed, the bathroom light didn’t work and the entire ceiling was covered in mould. There honestly wasn’t a single positive. The second I got home I contacted the hotel for a refund to complain about the absolute state of this room. (This room was much worse than the others our friends stayed in although they were also horrid) At first they were really helpful and someone said I’d get a refund as they admitted they had inspected the room, they needed lots of refurb, it had been closed off for guests and did smell of smoke. I was very understanding after they explained it was under new management and they knew improvements needed to be made. However, my refund never arrived. I continued sending polite messages every few months and consistently got told this matter had been escalated to ‘customer relations’ (pretty sure they don’t exist and I’m being laughed at, at this point) It’s been 10 months since our stay and all I want is a refund but realistically this won’t happen so now I just want this accommodation to be avoided- Even if you’re not looking for anything fancy when attending stag do’s/ hen do’s/ the Doncaster races, it’s not safe and I can imagine Doncaster has more comfortable/hygienic/ less smelly bins. Hopefully the videos attached show the full situation. I’ll be looking into taking further legal action as I’ve had long term respiratory complications since this stay from spending 7 hours in this room. I honestly have no idea who wrote the 41 excellent reviews but they’re clearly friends of the owners or must’ve been paid to write them. Not to overemphasise my earlier points but I’d rather sleep in a bin/ the street/a jail cell than stay here again. I just want my money and health back. PS- these videos were taken on a high quality camera. The air quality really was so bad that the entire room was brown/smoky.

First time I have eaten here and have to say the food was delicious and well priced. Traditional food well cooked and a good menu choice. We had lamb casserole and steak and ale pie.both were very generous portions . Well worth a visit. Pub / dining area could do with a bit if refresh but pleasant lunch. Would definitely recommend.

This is possibly the worst hotel I’ve stayed in for about 10 years. As well as a chugging radiator, the worlds flattest mattress, stained bedding and minging carpets, the bin was still full from the last guests. There was one cup and glass between the two of us and no spoons just a used plastic fork with stains on it. I’ve never had ketchup and mayo as an option in my tea tray either. I wrapped a towel round my pillow as I couldn’t fathom putting my face directly on theirs. I couldn’t even have a drink of water or a cuppa tea as it came out the tap like this! There was no one around to complain to as it was late when we got to our room and we left before anybody turned up in the morning What a dump

Just been as a couple for a treat and had fish and chips on the Tuesday special deal. Fantastic. Massive portion of Haddock, lovely crispy batter, proper mushy peas. Served very quickly. Thank you. Will be back.

Stayed with my son for one night in a twin room, the bed I was in was nearly falling apart, buckets on wardrobe to catch water from leaking roof, shower too hot or too cold , bedding was clean and so was towels, it is what it is cheap for a night but no more than that , staff were really nice and welcoming though

No breakfast available even though the website I booked through stated there is a full English breakfast available every day for guests. Twin room was incredibly tired and shabby with very little furniture. Window in bedroom did not close, so cold winter wind was blowing in. Bathroom was tiny. No evening meal available upon arrival as chef had gone home. Decided not to stay even though we had paid in full. Found a much better hotel for £1 more, with newly decorated rooms, breakfast available and an evening meal. Definitely made the right choice not to stay.

Definitely would not recommend…. The pub itself was ok. But the rooms were awful. The smell in the corridors were absolutely dreadful. And the rooms not much better. This should not be advertised for people to actually stay in. My daughter has stayed in youth hostels 100% better than this. The gaps in the windows were so bad we had to use all the towels to try and keep the wind out. It was freezing, we couldn’t get toilet paper out of the holder. There was less than a cm worth of hand soap to wash your hands. As the pub looked ok thought we would eat there (before we had seen the rooms) but although they advertise food it was not available on that day, which meant we had to walk somewhere else in the cold when I booked knowing we didn’t have a car.
