Velvet Hotel offers a stylish atmosphere and a prime central location popular with guests for its proximity to nightlife and transport. While many visitors commend the luxurious amenities like comfortable beds and quality toiletries, opinions on room comfort are split due to noise and cleanliness concerns. The service receives praise for its attentiveness, but the value proposition is questioned as some guests feel the hotel is overpriced and have raised issues with billing. Despite mixed reviews on noise levels, the overall cleanliness of the hotel is highly regarded.

We opted to stay at the Velvet Hotel due to its location on Canal Street. Canal Street was a disappointment as many of the venues were closed however it is January and we were there on a Monday & Tuesday.

The hotel itself is very nice. Staff friendly, helpful and welcoming.

We had one of the Balcony Rooms with an extra large bath. More than enough room for two. The bed was extremely comfortable with bedding and towels changed daily.

The balcony itself was quite narrow but had a heater and may be nice for sitting there in more clement weather.

There is a fridge stocked with drinks and a basket with red wine and goodies - all chargeable. There were two courtesy bottles of water on our first day but they were removed on day two.

In the morning a basket containing croissants, yoghurt pot and jam was left outside the bedroom door for a light breakfast. Tea and coffee making facilities are available in the room.

We were disappointed that the free WiFi was not reliable with either a very weak signal or none at all. The heated towel rail in the bathroom would not heat up and there was dust on the skirting boards. Also the inner door handle of the shower was broken making losing the door difficult.

We did have an enjoyable stay and if they get carry out a more stringent check on the rooms prior to occupation then the premium price charged will be worth it.

I stayed the night here April 2019 with my partner. It was a gift for my birthday in the March and when we arrived check in was easy and staff very welcoming my partner surprised me as instead of a standard room he had booked a room with balcony and had Prosecco and chocolate strawberries sent to the room which arrived just after we got into our room. The room itself was a nicely decorated with some original features and a good size big double bed, a small settee at the foot of the bed and all the general amenities as well dressing gowns being provided. The bathroom had a huge jacuzzi bath and separate shower, it was lovely spending time relaxing in the bath with the nice toiletries provided. We also spent some time on the small balcony looking over Canal Street although unfortunately also across from a lot of building work but this was obviously no fault of the hotels and it was a little interesting seeing all the work going on. It was a little chilly so we also used the small outside heater, it was nice to sit out with a nice coffee from the coffee machine in the room. We could hear quite a bit of noise from the penthouse above during the day so I was a little concerned about getting a good nights sleep because of this and also noise from the surrounding clubs and bars however it was a Sunday night when we stayed and Canal Street was pretty quiet near the hotel and the noise from upstairs had stopped so after returning from our night out and having one more drink in our room we had a comfortable nights sleep in the lovely big bed. Breakfast the next day was at the restaurant beneath the hotel and it was lovely and again lovely friendly staff the only thing I would say is the continental breakfast was quite limited just some cereal really but there was a good number of cooked options and they provided decent coffee. My partner paid for late checkout so we then got to enjoy our room and the jacuzzi bath a little longer.

All in all we had a lovely stay the only downside was that when originally booking it was also so we could use the restaurant as we’d used it at New Year and loved it however sometime after the booking they decided to close early on a Sunday which impacted on us being able to use the discount provided when staying at the hotel as we needed to be able to have a meal at a later time, my partner emailed sometime before we stayed and explained our disappointment and reason he chose the hotel was to also have use of the restaurant however the reply didn’t offer anything to compensate for our disappointment and we ended up booking a table at the nearby restaurant Number 1 Canal Street. Secondly although we managed to have one drink in the hotel bar this was all’s we had because they closed it very early we were hoping to finish our night here but again it was not meant to be we were again left disappointed.

Room was excellently decorated, great facilities and great staff. However for the money I would expect more effort to go into sound proofing the rooms as it was very noisy at night not only from the street outside but also the club downstairs and general noise inside the hotel. I appreciate some noise is expected given the location but a lot more could be done to reduce it. A hotel should give you a good nights sleep after all, regardless of price point or the reason for visiting.

We stayed in one of the 3 top floor (floor 4) suites with a mezzanine bedroom and toilet. The website says 2 bathrooms but the one in the bedroom is just a toilet.

There is a bar and large sofa "downstairs" but really the bar area is redundant unless you bring your own alcohol and mixers as the mini bar has wine, cans of soft drinks and a few mini spirits in and at £2.50 for a can of sprite your minibar experience would be expensive.

The huge TV in the lounge has Freeview and access to your own Netflix, YouTube and Disney+ accounts, however the whole time we were there the free WiFi did not work. I think it was a combination of the amount of people using it (hotel + bar) and the location of the room at the top of the building. If you do get signal then you need to remember to sign out before leaving.

The room was very clean and so was the bathroom. The website says "walk-in rainfall shower" but it's just a bigger version of what you have at home in an area the same size - the shower unit was a normal size, smaller than we have at home, fully enclosed, so not at all what you think of from the description. It's just a normal shower. It also says "marble bathroom" - the sinks (2 of which was great) and the bath are marble. We did not try the bath but it looked amazing, they should put pictures of it up on their website.

The rooms are a little out of date and the bed is not as good as the others in the hotel, which are glamorous. In fact I recommend you stay in a room not a suite. We have stayed here before in one of the very glamorous rooms and it was so much better. The suites are not glamorous, which is a real shame.

We used the bar, which was a terrible experience but it's not fair to tar the hotel staff with that Brush as the hotel staff were amazing.

We would not stay there again but I would recommend you stay once, in a room not a suite, fir the luxury experience.

We visited Velvet for a break away and to have a change of scenery and hopefully a bit of luxury. Having stayed there before we thought we were on to a guaranteed happy experience.

We stay in hotels many, many times through the year based here in the UK and abroad and we always try to book hotels with class, distinction and interesting features.

We stayed in two different rooms during our weekend away, a balcony room and a standard king room.

In our first room the bed looked amazing upon first entering the room but we quickly learnt that during darker hours you can’t see the bottom legs sticking out into the Room and the gap between the bed and the TV isn’t exactly helpful. This led to my partner breaking his toe and me ending up with a monster bruise on my shin.

We went out to town on our first day and upon returning we found our hotel room door hadn’t closed and locked and when we went into the room and tried to close the door it wouldn’t. After a bit of investigation we found that the metal at the base of the door was sticking out and stopping the door from closing automatically.

That night I tried to wash my hair using the hand held shower attachment but it didn’t work so I had to actually get in to the shower just to wash my hair.

The second day we moved to our king room and whilst at the reception we did convey our dissatisfaction to the reception who whilst very polite didn’t seem too interested in the fact that we had injured ourselves in any way.

Our second room seemed ok but in the morning of our check out I decided to make us a coffee and found the coffee machine still full of water and scum floating around in it which I had to clean before I used it.

Finally making the coffee and looking forward to much much needed morning boost. Whilst stood there in my shorts and having a bare torso the coffee machine decided to explode spraying scalding steamed water all over me.

When we left we again advised the receptionist about our issues and were told that the maintenance team would be notified but again absolutely no interest in reporting any accident.

Finally she advised me that it must have been my fault because there is no reason for it to happen unless I failed to secure the lid properly.

Having a machine like this at home I did advise that I was fully aware of how to use the machine in a sensible and safe way which I did and it was clearly an issue with the device.

These may seem like very minor issues but with the price you pay you don’t expect these issue to hamper your stay wether it’s your fist experience or tenth.

Velvet is and extremely unique hotel in a beautiful and fascinating building and it’s just a shame we had these problems and they weren’t dealt with in the correct Proffesional manner.

I will still stay at velvet and will still recommend it to my friends and family I just hope my future stays are slightly better.

After COVID killed any chance of a big get together for my 40th I decided to spoil myself with a pamper night in a snazzy boutique hotel. I used to love going to Malmaison around the corner but they have refurbished their suites and no longer have the 1m plunge baths which were the highlight of my previous trips.
This was my first stay at Velvet and I was impressed with the attitude of the staff who were very welcoming and even had a Whatsapp hotline for questions or food/drinks orders. The room was 2 floors with the bathroom and large lounge downstairs and the double bedroom and ensuite upstairs.
Decor was fun but a bit dated and some of the furnature had minor scratches and chips from normal wear and tear over time. (the only reason I didnt give a 5/5)
Apart from a single bedside cuboard door that would not close everything in the suite worked perfectly and the suite was meticulously clean.
A friend and I had a truly awesome meal at the attached Village Brasserie and our server Scott went out of his way to make us feel welcome.
Will definitely visit again.

For the money I genuinely think you could have a better experience elsewhere. I stayed here almost 10 years ago and it was worth talking about. It sold itself in word of mouth to be honest.

Like some of the reviews , we had a leaking shower that utterly drenched the whole bathroom. It was obvious we couldn’t have been the first ones to experience this. The shower itself was chipped and at first glance looked dirty.

The phone didn’t connect to reception like it stated.

The mini bar is extortionate when Spar is just around the corner.

The area itself looks run down too.

My biggest issue is Velvet investing in the expansion of the hotel to the adjacent building. I do not understand why they haven’t improved the hotel in the first place. Soundproofing, like the previous reviews, is a huge issue being above the clubs. The music is blaring and people are screaming at 3am. We had a balcony room which came with an additional expense, but the con was that the noise was worse during the night.

We had the misfortune of hearing the guests in the rooms next door on every phone call , and shall we say, *enjoying* their evening, which was really unpleasant.

It’s madness that they want to build even more rooms like this, without giving a thought to how they can improve the rooms they already have and justifying the expense. There is no breakfast option when booking and there is no mention of it at reception either. There are no milk options for the tea/coffee selection in the room.

Housekeeping were noisy in the morning so we were woken at 7.30 each morning. There is a lot of building work going on but this did not affect the stay.

I don’t know what’s happened to Velvet, the rooms in general are easy on the eye but as an experience it’s an awful disappointment.

There was a (mercifully) very brief period, probably in the 1980s, when painting everything black and adding grey carpets/soft furnishings was cutting edge interior design. Unfortunately it seems that there are some hotels in the c.£150 a night space in Manchester that haven't realised there's a reason it quickly died out forty years ago and, either through lack of funds or lack of effort, continue to slap black paint on anything wooden rather than rip stuff out and refurbish properly.

The Velvet was not to my taste for this reason, which is a shame because clearly someone has actually gone to a lot of effort here to try and make the property stylish and, in places, have clearly spent some money, but for me it just didn't work at all.

There's been a lot of clear investment in complimenting the Paint it Black style, with quality grey carpets and really nice dark grey/green panelled bathroom doors, but in rooms lacking much natural light, it felt all completely the wrong choice: like someone who had always wanted the chance to interior design finally got their opportunity and then handed their cash to Laurence Lewelyn-Bowen. I couldn't help but feel this place could have been a lot more impressive for the same budget.

Quite why, in such a small available space, the owners decided a kitchen area and bar with two stools would be a good use of space, I have no idea. Still, another block of black to compliment the black coffee table and the black side table and the black wall hung mirror.

The original steel roof struts have been left exposed but, sadly, since the room is so dark, you don't notice them.

The bathrooms are lovely, other than using a black trim where chrome would have been so much better. Clearly good money invested here though.

The bed was huge and fabulous: crisp, clean linen and super comfortable.

The room/bathroom was spotless throughout and indeed the whole property was very well maintained, other than the lift which looked like it was the scene of a minor gladiatorial battle.

The landings are too bright but largely free of the black thought, although the design obsession is still there with random artworks plonked on the floor.

The Reception area is a small, difficult space but the lighting is again too bright and the fit-out too stark: I didn't find it welcoming at all when we checked in.

Although the location is terrific, I wouldn't stay here again but think it would be a great place for (eg) hen party groups or a girls' weekend away.

Just got home after a fantastic night, which I thought was too good to be true but it really isn’t. Had the price of the stay, £119, as a bar tab to spend in the bar and restaurant, and it’s safe to say we made the most of it! Bar and restaurant are really good and food actually well priced, check in was easy, staff all very friendly and social distancing adhered to and felt safe. We got a free upgrade to the penthouse suite when we checked in which was amazing, and the customer service from Keith on the night shift was second to none when emailing the night before the stay, so massive Thankyou to him. Can’t wait to go back hopefully the offer is still on!

Hi. No they don't offer a reduced rate any more. We parked at Bloom Street car park which was £12 for 24 hours. If you use the RingGo parking app, you can just keep renewing it for as long as you need. Using the app adds 40p per session. Thanks.
