The Whitworth Locke apartments are ideally placed for events in Central Manchester. They are clean, well equipped and beautifully designed. Having a kitchenette is great and makes for a relaxing stay. The café downstairs is good too.

We've stopped at a number of great places in Manchester over the years, but as we were having an extended Christmas stay we chose to go for an apartment rather than a hotel room - the added flexibility (and economy) of being able to sort some of our own meals was very appealing.

We arrived on the 22nd December and, whilst somewhat early, we were able to check straight in (they do off a luggage drop off option if the room isn't ready). The bar, restaurant and lobby area were warming, and Emily who checked us in couldn't have been friendlier.

The room was immaculate, and very comfortable looking - the kitchenette we had whilst small was very efficiently provisioned and even included a dishwasher which amazed us. The bathroom was large and well laid out, with a shower that you could have probably got a rugby team into. The bed was large and really comfortable with plenty of pillows and a really cosy duvet.

There was a minor amount of noise in the corridors during the daytime, but nothing annoying and we both slept amazingly well the whole time that we were there.

Cannot fault the room or the set up here, and next visit plan to try the onsite coffee shop and restaurant at some point - this place has kind of killed off the Manchester Hotels for me, it was that good.

Stayed for a night with my partner on a quick city break and it was absolutely perfect. Really tasteful atrium bar as you walk in, smells lovely, fanstastic independent coffee shop on the premises, wonderful staff, modern and well-maintained rooms and perfect location for seeing the delights of the city centre. Each room has its own router so the wifi was great and the showers were fantastic (it was 30 degree + so we ended up having a few more showers than normal). We paid for breakfast and this turned out to be vouchers for the Foundation Coffee Shop on premises and they do a really good breakfast offering (with genuinely high quality coffee). Would have been very happy staying there for even longer as it was all really nicely realised. Some great space too for co-working so I would consider this too for work travelling if I need to stay in Manchester.

What can I say? Me and my girlfriend decided to take and inpromtu trip to manchester on the way back to Glasgow and we were not expecting much from this last minute booking, but boy were wrong. First off were impressed when we arrived as the lobby / entrance, leads into a beautiful bar / eating space and a accompaning lounge, with a pretty and luminous victorian greenhouse like glass and metal roof. the whole area in general had a very chilled yet warm atmosphere. Our room was pretty spacious considering, with a cool mellow colour scheme and a bunch of soft low kelvin lights, nice bathroom and a small fully contained kitchen area, with hobs an oven etc. So if you were visiting on the cheap you could cook your own meals. The whole hotel in general has a relaxed cool yet inclusive young persons vibe, (we are 23 and 27), with fun decor all around the building, sorta reminded me abit of a way nicer version of student halls, but the same kinda approachable feel. The staff are extremly friendly and happy to help, and you can have more of a conversation on a level with them, rather than them seeming like employees. On the day we checked out, we were allowed to leave our bags there for the day while we explored the city before getting the train back which was very cool of them. Would definitely recommend and go back. Only criticism was there was not much a view from our window, but due to the layout of the old building, this would not be possible in some of the rooms, as the windows face each other over the bar / lounge roof. But I am sure some of the more expensive rooms do have nice views.

Stylish, if slightly impractical apartments in a great area of Manchester. On the doorstep of Canal Street, the apartments would be perfect for a weekend away. The kitchen facilities aren’t practical enough for long stays and dare I say, the apartments are almost too quirky for their own good. There is a great bar downstairs and also a good breakfast cafe and separate pop up restaurant which changes hands every few months. There’s no noise from downstairs heard in the rooms upstairs which is impressive as it’s a busy joint. Canal Street gets very busy at the weekends so if you’re not a fan of noise, be sure not to get an apartment that overlooks the river.
Some of the apartments can be dark and gloomy. This could be helped if all the apartments weren’t painted the same uniform salmon pink which may be aesthetically “cool” but is a bit daft when you don’t have enough light - particularly in the bathroom, ladies! There is also no storage in any of the apartments which is frustrating.
The kitchen makes no sense at all. The combi microwave/oven is a real pain to work and if you don’t succeed, there’s only two electric hobs available.
The rubbish and recycling system really needs addressing at Whitworth Locke. Recycling basically doesn’t exist which is outrageous in my opinion in this day and age.
The gym is ok but leaves a lot to be desired.
The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. They have occasional pop up shops that appear every now and then in the communal area downstairs which is a nice touch.
I really enjoyed my stay here and would go back but perhaps for a shorter stay. The ‘suites’ are the best apartments in my opinion for space and light but if you’re looking for a long term apartment in Manchester, Whitworth Locke’s apartments aren’t the most practical.

Hi EleTommo, Thank you so much for sharing such a detailed review. I am sorry that you experienced some inconsistencies during your stay. We are happy to provide additional lighting if requested as we appreciate that the atmospheric lighting design is not to everybody's taste! The instructions for the combi microwave are located in the kitchen cupboard or we are happy to pop up and assist :) As a business we try to be as environmentally friendly as possible and recycling within individual rooms is something that is being looked into. Thanks for your kind comments regarding the team, I am pleased that you enjoyed your overall stay. We all hope to see you again to improve your opinion in the future. We had a great stay here and would stay again. It was clean and comfortable. The kitchenette was practical and sufficient to cook snacks/little meals. The bathroom is stocked with toiletries. There are plenty of radiators so you can keep warm and fans are available upon request to cool down. The bar downstairs looked lovely but we didn’t use it.
It’s somewhat noisy here, but you can’t complain as you are in a city centre hotel! Just be mindful of it if you don’t like any noise at all.
The only downside for me was the decor of the rooms. Salmon painted absolutely everywhere including ceilings, tiles, skirting boards, grouting, walls, everywhere! It was a little much for me and I felt it made the rooms seem less nice than there actually are. I would stay again though, it’s not enough to put me off just a little odd. Decaf tea would also have been appreciated in the drinks bag. The popcorn and fresh milk was well received, thank you!
The gem of this hotel was the service we received. Our reservation (prepaid) couldn’t be found. The man behind the reception (I think he might have been called Ifor) sorted it out without delay and gave us an upgrade to a one bedroom apartment instead of what we had paid for. He was very pleasant whilst trying to sort out the issue and even took the time to ask about our plans. The next morning he remembered us and asked how we had enjoyed it. This was lovely service and actually you don’t get that in many places.
I would recommend this aparthotel and would be more than happy to stay again - thank you!

Overall it was a very comfortable stay. The staff were super friendly and informative right from the moment we stepped in the door. The relaxed atmosphere was lovely. We liked not being tied to having to be up and ready for a regimented breakfast time by having our own very smart space saving kitchen facilities. Full size fridge and microwave is a great thing to have access to. Ironing board, iron and even most surprisingly a washing machine and dishwasher were provided and everything was clean and tidy. The toiletries were excellent quality and the shower was roomy and hot water plentiful. Decor was simple but tasteful and there was lots of storage space to tuck everything away. Up to date TV that you are able to connect your devices to, comes in handy being able to connect to prime or Apple TV when there’s nothing on freeview!
Disliked · I’m not one to be overly fussy and this is meant as constructive feedback, not a complaint at all, but for the money spent on the stay (£75 p.p. p.n.) I would expect a little more attention to be paid to one or two things in the room….. I would personally have loved to see bigger bath towels, those postage stamp sized things are the bane of my life everywhere we go. I understand the tin camping mugs are a hardwearing alternative to breakables but the enamel on one of the mugs in our room was chipped to the point it wasn’t really fit for use and should be replaced. There wasn’t a decent selection of tea&coffee in the room for a 2 night stay (2 coffee bags, 2 English breakfast tea and 2 sencha tea), it’s a good job I took my own instant coffee otherwise hubby would have had to do without (he won’t drink proper coffee unfortunately) Although it wasn’t the largest of rooms and as such there were no bedside tables it could benefit from a small shelf by the bed to keep your phone/bottle of water rather than leaving them on the floor. Exercise caution on the rug in the room too, very slippery.

Great open plan reception and bar area, with good atmosphere upon arrival. The place looks good initially and has a chilled feel, with a nice coffee shop sharing the open space near to the bar area.

The rooms also look good and have nicely finished bathrooms and kitchens. The annoying part of the stay was the room we had lacked small features that you'd expect to see. Firstly, there's only small lights available on the walls and a dimly lit main light meant the room appeared a little dark at times in the evening. The bed placement was flush next to the wall and with no bedside tables we had to put charging phones and other small valuables either on the wardrobe draws (next to one side of the bed) or down the gap between the bed and the wall, on the floor.

The biggest thing for us was that the plug sockets/USB was consistently buzzing throughout the night and keeping us awake. Situated on the wall right next the bed it made for a disturbed nights sleep and considering the busy central location of the hotel you'd expect something other than a wall socket to be keeping you up at night.

Overall could have been better. If some small things were addressed and the room had a touch more comfort to it then the stay would have potentially lived up to the style of the place a little more.

Hi mcxley_2020, Thank you for taking the time to share this review; I am sorry that Whitworth Locke did not live up to your expectations on this occasion. I have informed our Maintenance Manager about the USB socket to ensure this is addressed. Our property was designed with relaxing and atmospheric lighting in mind however I appreciate that this isn't to everybody's taste! If you choose to stay again in the future we would be happy to provide additional lighting. Due to the size and shape of the building the rooms vary in layout however again if you did choose to stay again we would be happy to allocate one that has bedside tables. Overall I hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Whitworth Locke to improve your opinion in the future. Best wishes, Alice Gibbins Assistant General Manager

Having stayed at the stunning Eden Locke in Edinburgh a while ago I had high hopes for my stay in Manchester, but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

The property’s communal areas are finished to a very high standard and created a nice warm atmosphere when we arrived in the evening. All the staff we met were very friendly and happy to help where needed. However, went we got to our room I was quite disappointed. The darkish peach colour chosen for the rooms feels a little too dark and almost cold and depressing matched with the black kitchen. The limited lighting options don't do enough to counteract this. A couple of small pictures on the wall does little to break this up and feels like an afterthought. The bathroom again is quite dark with the peach again and dark blue. It was already showing signs of aging with paint peeling off the ceiling. The bath too itself is quite odd as its very narrow at the bottom so feels weirdly restrictive when standing in the shower. Shaving the following morning proved challenging too due to the dark walls and poor lighting choices.

Breakfast was another disappointment! Do not take the breakfast option offered by the hotel! This is charged at £10 per person and offers a choice from a very limited menu in the coffee shop. A coffee, a juice and a basic food item. Each morning it would have been cheaper to pay for what we ordered rather than using the vouchers and there are many more tasty breakfast items offered that were not included as part of the hotels voucher scheme.

Overall, I didn’t have an unpleasant stay and I do still love the Locke concept, however I feel the Manchester rooms are quite badly executed compared to other properties and the jury is still out as to whether I would chose to stay here again, on my next trip to Manchester.

Hi Gavf77, Thank you for all of your feedback, we really appreciate it. I'm really glad you liked the communal areas, and I'm so happy you had a good experience with our staff. The design of our rooms interior and lighting was chosen by our architect to create a relaxed and calming environment throughout the apartment, but we do totally understand that this is not always for everyone. I'm so sorry to hear that the bathtub felt restricting, not many of our rooms have baths but the walk in showers they do feel more spacious to me, we would be happy to offer you one of these rooms if you would prefer, should you choose to stay with us again. Regarding the breakfast voucher, I do hear what you're saying and agree that it can sometimes be more cost effective to pay as you go with the coffee house, I will take note of this feedback. I really hope you would consider staying with us again, Best wishes Grace

We visited Manchester as we had tickets to see a show at the o2 Apollo. What can I say we couldn’t have picked a better place to stay! The location was spot on, a short walk into the centre of Manchester and also the the venue, parking next door all without having to drive into the centre of the city. The hotel reception and surrounding spaces are decorated to perfection, all of the staff we encountered where welcoming and friendly with a lovely bar to relax in, and a great cafe with amazing pastries. The room was really spacious and unique, it felt clean and cosy with everything you could possibly need. We found the bed lovely and comfortable and especially the sofa in the room too.
The only reason for 4 stars and not 5 is the sound in the room, you could hear people walking in the lobby and also the room above when they walked around/ flushed the loo etc and we were woken up by a cleaner in the lobby early hours of Saturday morning. Luckily it didn’t disturb us too much as this wasn’t a ‘relaxing’ stay for us. We did mention it to staff and they were really understanding giving us some ear plugs and vouchers for a drink which made up for the issue for us. We will be returning to whitworth Locke and other Locke living hotels in the future and would recommend anyone to come and stay. Thank you!
