I feel that this is advertised as a hotel, while it’s just a horrible party hostel. Even youth hostel are more quiet than that. Rooms are right above the club, no way you’ll be sleeping if you’re not passed out drunk. Bathrooms are dirty. Just horrible.

I made a reservation through Booking. com, securing a room at a rate of £30. I subsequently received correspondence from the hotel indicating that the room had been mistakenly priced and they requested either a cancellation, rebooking at a higher rate, or selecting a double room for £44. In response, I expressed my willingness to be adaptable and to opt for the double room, while also inquiring if they could uphold the originally agreed upon £30 rate. The hotel's response was simple ‘No’, with further messages conveying that they would rather leave the room vacant. Having been a repeat guest at this hotel and their bar on numerous occasions, I held the expectation of a more favourable reply, particularly given their long-standing presence in the industry. While I acknowledge the possibility of errors, I found the nature of their response to be both unwarranted and discourteous.

We booked @ new union as last minute trip to Manchester. It's in the gay village & we were warned by manager Adele it may be too noisy as the disco stys open til 6am. She needn't have worried! We had a comfy bed, ensuite with a wonderful shower & tea making facilities. The bar downstairs was packed- everyone welcome & friendly. The hotel is at the beginning of canal streets colourful LGBTQ+ scene. There's lots of nightlife & characters. Would definitely recommend it as a place to stay that's affordable but friendly too & great to explore Manchester in all its glory. We visited China Town, the Manchester art gallery & the people's museum as well as the wonderful vine pub. We will be back

I wouldn’t say this was the worst place to stay but it’s not the best either. Here’s my honest review…. Pros: Location. Central Manchester on the corner of canal street. Excellent. Clean Comfy mattress Cheap Cons. Extremely noisy Broken bed frame Cold No curtains Stayed here for a night with some friends. Thankfully I’d had a drink and packed an eye mask so I managed to get some shut eye but the noise is tremendous. It’s above a pub/bar which (on a Thursday night) played music until 2:30am. When the music stopped, I hoped the revellers would leave straight away, no such luck. Laid awake until 3:30am listening to shouting, arguing, singing etc… My bed was comfy and aside from the noise, I had a decent sleep. The room was really cold when we got in, I was frozen but the heating must have come on in the night as I warmed up. The room was really clean, I cannot fault that. Nice bedding and fresh towels. I had a shower and it was spotlessly clean. Would I stay here again? Yeh, in a group with the girls, I would do. It was everything we needed. Romantic/business trip, then no. The only thing I really did not like was the drag act in the bar downstairs. The “compère” was awful and we really did not appreciate his joke when dedicating a song to Diana which lyrics described a car crashing into a bridge. Extremely distasteful. He should be ashamed.

I'll let you know what the first was after my review. First off, if you are looking to get sleep you with not get any here at a weekend. Early in the week perhaps. But I will never know. I'll not be back. I had little choice but to last minute book here so I didn't get the chance to check the reviews. My bad. It was the only place left in central Manchester and that itself should have made me suspicious. I was sent a message after the free cancelation deadline telling me my room was directly above a bar. I responded saying I just want to sleep, will that be a problem? No response. I have stayed in 'lively' areas the world over but not this noisy and not this expensive. Plus nowhere had staff this rude. I thought spending over £100 would secure the basic necessity of getting some sleep but it was not so. According to the staff I should have done my research. On arrival I was asked for a £20 deposit or passport as the keys get stolen. Maybe this is because access to the hotel gets you free access to the club. I wondered about security. On arrival I could see that the rooms were in fact directly above a bar and nightclub and asked a young unhappy looking guy if my room was at the quieter end of the building. He, told me it was, ushered me into my room, told me where the wifi password was and left. I was recording an audio message to my friend and commenting that there was a lot of activity outside the rooms and I hoped someone wasn't going to burst in during the night. At that moment people burst in through my door. This was not the first time I did not feel safe and secure in the room. As the door does not automatically lock when closed I finally figured how the lock worked but still didn't feel secure. The noise in the corridors and music played through the night. Till 6am. I always pack silicon earplugs but they were useless here. I may as well have slept in the bass cab. If it wasn't for the fact I was in town to work I would have had a late night and enough ales to pass out (they only served lager). But instead I lay there listening to arguments, dealing, epic lovemaking and the constant slamming of doors. I wondered if others in the place were paying by the hour and I had gotten ripped off. At 6:30am, after zero sleep, I gave up on sleep, and started packing my bag to leave. Outside the window I witnessed a guy get beaten to a pulp in the street as gangs of drunks still left clubs. The next road was cordoned off because of much worse. I politely complained about the terrible night to a lady in the office and she told me they didn't want me there. She was angry saying I had taken a room that someone else could have enjoyed. She confirmed that this hotel was not for sleeping. She then hoped that I'd write something that would warn others who might visit looking to sleep. On reflection I think the lady was sick to the teeth of having these kinds of complaints from people who see a hotel and think they might be able to sleep. In a way I feel sorry for her. Imagine having to work in this kind of environment. I'd be miserable as well. At least I am able to leave. This comes a very close second to a night I spent in Khartoum where the secret police were kicking in doors trying to find the one I was in. Take some solace in the fact that this is not the best Manchester has to offer. In my opinion anywhere else would be better than this.

This was the worst night I ever spent in a hotel in my life. Firstly - the noise. I knew I was staying in a hotel with a bar downstairs and going on a night out ourselves, it was not unreasonable to expect noise until 2:00, maybe 3:00 but oh no, this was like trying to sleep on the floor of a dancefloor until it closed at 6:00!!! And even then that wasn't the end. Another hour of people dispersing and listening to their drunk conversations followed. Throughout the night I was constantly having to listen to other disrespectful guests having conversations outside my door, it was like being in some grotty hostel. I kept going to the door and telling them how inconsiderate they were. And it wasn't just the guests who had no consideration. I even heard conversations between staff in the hallway during the night, even they can't be bothered to have any consideration whatsoever for their customers. And these conversations on top of feeling like I'm in the nightclub while I'm trying to sleep. Let's look at other aspects of the hotel. Check in - We arrived at the venue which is very confusing and the rude woman at the bar shouted for us to go upstairs for the hotel. We roamed the corridors and eventually found the tucked away reception room. We got the room key and asked for 2 extra pillows. The pillows never materialised. 2 hours later I went to reception again to ask for pillows, no-one there. I tried again an hour or so later, no-one there. There is a phone number, I called twice, no answer. Later in the evening I bumped into a member of staff in the corridor and asked for more pillows, they never materialised. I did this again and eventually they arrived, although they could literally fold in half and belonged in the bin several years ago. The room was ridiculously warm and we couldn't open the window because if we did we had even more noise from the drunks outside. The view from the window was of a fire exit of another building the drunks used as a urinal. The bed was uncomfortable, the type of mattress that should've been replaced years ago that I expect at places like Britannia. The TV had no channels tuned in!!!!! It didn't seem like it was even connected to an aerial. I had to sign up for ITV Hub on my phone so we could watch anything to try and drown out the noise since there was no chance of actually getting any sleep. There was handwash in the shower!!!! Checkout - Nobody at reception. A cleaning lady very rudely shouted to us 'Ring number' instead of actually getting a member of staff to check us out. It's no wonder they make you leave a deposit for the room key when they don't staff the reception area. I had to call the hotel to ask someone to check us out. This hotel is an absolute joke. From the rude staff to the poor rooms to the noise levels. They have no business running a 'hotel' in the same building as a nightclub open until 6am. It should be closed down. Best of all it's not even cheap!!!!! I note their response to criticism as "The people that the hotel is aimed at (revellers) love it" well if that's the case and I take it their definition of revellers is people who want no sleep whatsoever and have no respect for other human beings (and the staff seem to fall into this category too), I suggest they are clearer on their website about who the 'hotel' is aimed at.

I loved this place, so here is an honest, and honestly enthusiastic, review. I booked a room through hotels.com at the last minute when my train was cancelled -- just needed a place to stay for one night within easy walking distance of Manchester Piccadilly -- and got so lucky to end up here. If you are a queer-friendly, sociable person then go directly to the New Union. Even though it was past their usual check-in time I was fortunate to reach someone there by phone who told me someone at the bar could help me (the rooms are above a gay bar). When I arrived, the drag performers were on a break so helped me with my suitcase and the manager checked me in quickly. The room was simple but spotless, the bathroom looked newly remodelled, and the bed was extremely comfortable. The music went on until late but I was exhausted and have excellent earplugs so that was no problem -- I went down to the bar and had a glass of wine, took a hot shower (great water pressure) then went right to sleep. I needed to leave early -- before their 8am check-out time -- so I left my £20 key deposit with them, even though the manager told me that, if I left them a note, I could pick it up next time I was in Manchester. I hope they use it to buy themselves some drinks, as a thank-you for the warm welcome and comfortable stay!

Chesterfields everywhere, nice clean pub with friendly staff, used by general public and guests alike, not far from the city centre of Manchester, price of the Moretti alone would make me inclined not to revisit as there are cheaper places around the corner, unsure if the prices are due to it being a hotel or not

Booked a hotel for 1 night in June for a set price. Had email confirmation and booking details sent. A week later they what’s app to say the hotel should have been set at £408 more than what we paid! Unless we would pay that the booking would be cancelled. No apology, no meet in the middle, nothing. Poor customer service. Hotel seemed over priced for the room anyway, but was the only hotel we could find. Wouldn’t recommend

Dear Charlie I’m sorry for the poor experience we have both had with this booking . It wasn’t a week ago though as you well know. I immediately got in touch so that you can make alternative arrangements. As discussed on the phone I can prove that I set the rates correctly as I took a photo of them at the time. I don’t think it’s fair that we as an small independent business should have to pay for a mistake of a multi national bookings company.

Do never go there the employees admitted to ripping us off in front of us. The noise is unbearable and the quality of the hotel is miserable. It actually doesn’t deserve that many words. Worst hotel experience ever in a hotel. If you visit Manchester and want to rest don’t go there

The people that the hotel is aimed at (revellers) love it. It would be a shame for them to miss out on a place that they love because you don't like it. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your experience at the hotel.
