We stayed her for a night in a double double room. The hotel is easy to find, although is currently surrounded by building work, so isn’t quite as easy to reach at the moment. As a side note, it is interesting to see just how much building is going on around the hotel and in a year or so this corner of Manchester is going to look very different indeed. As location goes, you’re only about ten minutes walk from the Town Hall and I like this part of town.

By the time we arrived at the hotel there were no spaces in the car park at the front of the hotel, but I had already been told by reception that they would move our car if we left it at the front. Parking was okay at £17 for the night, especially as the valet parking was the same price. Indeed, leaving the car at the front presented no problems at all and it had been moved back the following morning when we wanted to pick it up around lunchtime. A very good service.

The reception area is impressive and the staff at check in all very pleasant and polite. Our room was on the second floor and was a good size and looked amazing with the exposed beams. As the hotel is only a few floors high, none of the rooms have very impressive rooms. (If you want views of the city, you need to stay at the Hilton.) In the room we had, ‘double’ really did mean a standard double bed, so not tiny but cozy with two people in it. The room also came with two bottles of free water, which is always appreciated.

The bathroom is what let the room down slightly. Ours was not huge and only a shower over the bath, but with the low ceiling it meant that anyone over 5ft 7in is unable to stand directly underneath the shower. I am not very tall but am not used to have to bend under a shower.

Also (and I suspect this is quite unusual) our room did not have a do not disturb sign. I had assumed this meant that house keeping would take guidance from the front desk about who had checked out, but sadly it was not the case and house keeping were knocking on our door at 8.30am. Luckily we were already awake. Just.

The grumbles about the shower and lack of do not disturb sign aside, you can tell that the V&A is a very well run hotel. The staff are all very polite and efficient. We didn’t take up the offer of breakfast as we have other places nearby that we like to eat at, but the bar was good with plenty of seating and a good choice of drinks. For the right rate, we would happily stay here again.

At £75 for the night midweek, this was a reasonable deal but was yet another disappointing central Manchester hotel, albeit a lot better than the last couple of dumps we stayed at (pls see other reviews)

Check in was quick, efficient and very friendly (thank you Mamadi); lobby area is recently refurbished and although a bit spartan, refeshingly modern. Unfortunately as soon as you get to the lifts to head to your room you realise that the hotel is badly in need of a major refresh and set against the fabulous building itself (Victorian wharehouse), it all becomes a bit dispiriting.

There are only two lifts, which is wholly inadequate for a property of this size; only one was working during our stay.

Our room was spacious and clean but the fittings tired and old. Given the size of the room, the tiny hanging space provided was very odd, so if you're here for more than one night you'll be living out of your suitcase. Still and sparkling water were provided but not from the same brands, which left the impression no one is really trying very hard to hit any kind of standard and just getting a box ticked is 'doing enough'.

AC worked well - we were kept nicely warm during a very cold spell of weather.

The bath was stained a shade of yellow I've never come across before, it having aquired a patina that looked like someone had lay in a full tub of fake tan for a few hours rather than following the instructions on the packet. The enamel was badly chipped in two places.

Lots of shelf space in the bathroom and the water was hot, shower strength reasonable; the bathroom mirror is heated, which was welcome.

We got a voucher for two free drinks in the bar - my G&T was excellent and the lady who served us very friendly and welcoming.

Location is very good with shops/restaurants nearby albeit a good ten minutes walk from the nearest metro stop.

For £50 more you can stay at the Holiday Inn by Piccadilly station which is new, sparkling and vastly superior in every category.

Big rooms, although no fridge and with covid-19 meant bins in room not emptied, towels not changed, toiletries not refreshed - tea/coffee making in room and safe, breakfast provided and left outside room each day (choose from pack of cereals, porridge, yogurt, fruit, pastry, small bottle of milk, juice, etc).
Clean reception, although hotel facilities closed - very small car park at front of hotel, otherwise staff will direct you to staff car park at back of hotel. Lots of building work around hotel but sound didn't affect us.
Nice Indian restaurant (Scene) 3 min walk away and other restaurants, central Manchester shopping area within walking distance. Easy to get to ring road/motorways.

The Marriott V&A is a quaint older hotel that I am sure was all the talk when it was new, however there are too many things wrong with this location now to give it a good review. The service in the dining area (which is dated) is very slow. Order a beer and they may have to get the bartender from the back because they are doing another job. Order dinner and its a minimum 20-25 min. wait from order to delivery. The rooms have posts and beams that cut through them at 5'10" so you are going to crack your head on it at least 5 times. The shower/tub is on a platform making the ceiling about 5'10" as well... I'm 6'0" so couldn't stand up straight in the shower, and the shower head sprayed my stomach. For me the deal killer was that the gym was about a mile away, no transportation... they gave you a map and said walk (in the rain, 5 degrees Celsius, in shorts and a t-shirt). I was supposed to stay a week, I left after 2 days.

Dear Thomas, Thank you for choosing to stay with us and for taking the time to share your comments on TripAdvisor. I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay with us, please accept my sincere apologies. The Food and Beverage team work very hard to ensure that we are striving to deliver excellent guest service, it appears that we let you down on this occasion. I have passed your comments to my leadership team. We will be refurbishing our Lounge area in June/July this year to enhance our guest experience. We do have a few rooms in the hotel with limited ceiling height due to the age of the building and conversion from a cotton warehouse. If you do wish to stay with us in the future please speak with one of my team and they will allocate you a room with more head height. Please feel free to reach out to me directly if you wish to discuss your experience with me any further. Kindest Regards Paul Walsh

Had my 60th birthday party at the Marriott Victoria Albert hall Manchester.
Beautiful function room, lovely hotel very nice and clean.
The food was very nice, all my guest for my party enjoyed the food, their reviews were very good about the setting everything.

Reception staff amazing, cleaners very nice, nothing to complain on that aspect

However when you booked a function and had to pay out all that money, the hotel would normally give a complimentary room or a discount on a room. I did not receive any of this
I paid to have a room, bought my breakfast and I also paid an extra 100 pounds to have my own wines to put on the table for my party so I had nothing complimentary from the hotel to say thank you for booking your party with us

Would I stay here again, yes I would but I would rethink having an event even though it's a beautiful venue for parties.

I really wanted to rate this hotel higher but some niggling faults have led me to what I believe is a fair assessment. For information this is my 2nd stay here.

Firstly Maria on reception was wonderful and we had a complimentary room upgrade. The room 334 is really nice and spacious deluxe king-size. Living area, separate bedroom and bathroom. All very nice and great location to spinningfields. Quick walk to Deansgate.

So why the 3 stars? Our body wash was not replenished in the morning after the first night. Quick call to reception and sorted quickly.

After the 2nd night stay our mugs are the same ones we used from the previous day. Reception once again are brining some clean replacements whilst I type this.

We've also noticed we're now short on a foot towel for the shower.

The bathroom does take a good while to extract after showers. It looks like others that have stayed here haven't left the extractor running and the ceiling is starting to peel away.

We did try breakfast one morning at £15 per person. Both had the full English breakfast with fried eggs only to be brought a plate with fried eggs on it. It wasn't explained at the time of order than the rest of the full English is self service from the buffet area. The food wasn't particularly hot from there. We didn't try the breakfasts here again as much better can be sourced nearby for less. Some places you'll need to book in at whilst others you can just turn up.

This break was to celebrate our first wedding anniversary together. Fair play to the Marriott after seeing cards in our room, they left some balloons, a card and some cake for us after we returned from a day out. A really nice touch but the slate plate the cakes were on are still here after this mornings room clean. We haven't hidden the dirty crockery either, slap bang in the middle of the table.

Some time later... the clean mugs aren't here. I was going to have a cuppa before venturing out but may as well buy one out now.

Not sure if this is teething issues with new cleaning staff, getting back up to speed following COVID but first time in a hotel of this standard I've had to moan about the small stuff. At full rate we are told this room is £250 per night and you expect the service to be there.

It hasn't put me off coming here again but I hope this honest feedback is useful to the hotel.

This is a beautiful hotel where the building is more than 100 years old. Yet, they have worked hard to keep the building modern historical where appropriate, and modern to meet the needs of today's travelers.

Located within walking distance from the city center, it therefore provides good access to downtown Manchester.

Rooms are spacious and well maintained. In fact, during my stay, they were renovating quite a lot of the rooms on the 4th floor.

You can grab a nice English breakfast at the restaurant on the ground floor. And every afternoon from 1.30pm to 4pm, they also offer Afternoon tea at 19 GBP each.

Only downside is that they do not have a gym within the hotel but compensate guests by providing access to a nearby full scale gym that is about 5 minutes by walking.

Lovely hotel close to the city centre. Very smiley receptionist made us feel so welcome. Room ( king sized) had lovely toiletries- very large, powerful shower and ample tea/coffee.
We sat watching the rugby in the large bar restaurant area. Afterwards we ate in the restaurant overlooking the river. Again the staff were friendly and quick to come to the table.
Breakfast was a buffet ( some table service if that’s what you wanted) . It all tasted very freshly made and there was a large choice of food. Constantly being replenished. Again most friendly staff.
We parked in the NCP car park 5 mins walk away so very convenient and at the hotel rate of £15 good value for overnight.

Despite everything written below we really did enjoy our stay, so Im leaving a 4/5 none the less. You will love the Food, and the atmosphere of the place and its perfectly situated with rooms overlooking the River Irwell

BEDS?
Well, each to their own, I suppose, I'm just not one for a overly soft, uneven mattress, or for pillows that instantly deflate the moment your head touches them.

CAR PARKING?
It is limited to around 15 cars with 3 of those for disabled parking only, they do have an overspill carpark around the back of the hotel that some of the receptionists know about, and some don't... When you arrive by car, if your'e lucky enough to get parked, be sure to ask at reception to book your car in for £10 per might, then if you go out and there's no space available, you'll secure yourself a spot in the overspill carpark around the back.

TV's?
Dated and the HDMI ports won't accept your devices should you want to bring say, a fire stick and watch your own TV as is common these days. For the size of the rooms the TV's are small compared with Premier Inn where they truly understand what size TV goes on the wall.
