My wife and I returned home from Paris last night. I couldn't wait to tell people about this hotel. Behind the doors fronting an active street in a popular neighborhood, Hotel de Grandes Eccles surrounds a garden refuge from the activity of Paris. Our room was larger than we had the week before on a Viking river boat. No TV or A/C, but large windows opening to pleasant views. We stayed in room 114, the only one with a terrace, for six nights, Rick Steves 'Pocket Paris' and Michelin Green Guide both commend the hotel's features, especially the garden setting. But I must also commend the friendly, helpful, genuinely nice women and men who work there. They must love their jobs because they do those jobs so well. When Hemingway lived next door at 74 Rue de Cardinal Lemoine or one street over at La Maison de Verlaine on Rue Descartes (now a very nice restaurant), he had to go downhill to Blvd St Germain for food, drink and interesting people. Today restaurants close to the hotel offer every cuisine except Mexican and South American (and Russian), The cafes and restaurants feature outdoor tables, but good ones have nice inside seating; prices were what we expected for Paris. We also expected lots of people, but not the eight-piece brass band with three trombones on Bastille Day evening. We miss Paris and our new favorite place to stay Hotel des Grandes Eccles.

Really nice place to base yourself for visiting Paris. Lovely old building with a secluded courtyard. One you get through the lovely large gate into the cobbled courtyard you are able to leave the busy city behind. Room was simple but comfortable and very quiet. Staff were extremely helpful, and add to that the excellent location for the attractions and the dozens of bars ,cafes and restaurants within minutes, it really is a place to be recommended

Very nice stay. Rooms are clean and quaint. A very Parisienne feel.. We stayed in a room that overlooked the garden. Very nice! Key fob required to enter, felt very safe. Breakfast was very filling with croissant, yogurt, bread, cheese and egg. Close to the metro.

The hotel is a dream and deserves a five star rating. The very busy Platz de la Contre Escape is just a few steps away, but you won't hear anything about it. The house is divided into several houses with 50 rooms. The room, overlooking the courtyard, was very simply furnished and, as a positive sign, no TV. Otherwise everything was as expected. The bathroom, well furnished, could be be refresh.
Room service was effective, reception was friendly and quick.
We were very happy that there was no buffet and felt well served with the dishes on offer. The service, especially the nice lady from Austria, was always very friendly and quick. Having breakfast in the garden was a highlight here.
In particular, breakfast is open until 12:00, which is an exception to all hotels that close the buffet at 10:30.
You can relax in the garden and drink the water that was available, otherwise you can always order a warm drink.
All in all, a fantastic hotel and we will be come back again.

The expensive room was small and dark ( price was almost doubled for last three days) because of the World Rugby matches. After complaining we paid extra for a slightly larger room, still with no sunlight, and opening to the garden. We were continually disturbed by plumbing from the room above. On the positive side, the staff were friendly, the garden setting is peaceful and beautiful, and the breakfast was good (if you eat outside in summer beware the wasps).

Dear Margaret, Thank you for your review and feedback on the Hôtel des Grandes Ecoles. Our charming establishment, in the style of a French family home. We are aware that our century-old hotel is in need of renovation, and this is what we will undertake in the winter of 2024-25, and renovate all the bathrooms. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you at the end of the works in a new environment, which will meet your expectations and your hotel experience. Greetings to Australia, The General Manager, The HGE team

What a special hotel in Paris! Step through the doors into the haven of a fragrant garden courtyard. Get a superior double on the courtyard and you will have quiet and comfort throughout your stay. Rooms are small but adequate. Beds are wonderful. Be sure to pay bill in Euros not dollars cause conversion is not favorable. Breakfast very convenient at 11 Euro from 7:15 until Noon! Most romantic setting in 5th ARR with Metro, cafes, pedestrian street Rue Mouffetard, and Seine just steps away. What everyone envisions a Parisian experience to be.

When we arrived in Paris, some friends had gotten to the hotel first and were sitting under those umbrellas in the courtyard with wine and bread for us. It started out perfectly and stayed that way. Our room was right off the courtyard pictured and it was heavenly. Some of our party had windows on the cobblestone walkway and complained about some noise. The location was perfect for walking and finding restaurants and other things to do. Our first night, we walked down to a little plaza and there was a combo playing. Everyone agreed it was a great hotel.

This second visit was disappointing in that the exterior door was propped open during the day because a first floor room was rented to an artist for use as a studio. She was open for public viewing of her work. Secondly our room
had a hair dryer that didn't work and there was only one mirror in the family room for four. It was in the bathroom. They made available a hand held hair dryer but there was no outlet in the bathroom. Without a mirror in the bedroom area where the outlets were, it was useless to try to dry and style longer hair.
It seemed they were unconcerned with the comfort and amenities of guests.
Te attraction of this hotel is the garden but it needs improvement in attention to details for visitors to Paris.

We stayed as a family of four and the boys was an excellent choice for Paris.
First the staff friendliness, service and attention to detail was outstanding.
Next the rooms were quiet and practical with beautifully decorated wallpaper. The rooms do not have TVs (a plus for me). Shower and hot water excellent.
Breakfast was well worth it. The continental style breakfast was tasty and filling enough o keep us going for the trip up the Eiffel Tower (and that’s a demanding attraction!)

But better than all the above is the feeling of entering a peaceful oasis set away from the bustling Paris streets. The garden is large and lush plenty of table space and breakfast or coffee is possible there if the weather is ok.
I’m definitely staying here next time I am in Paris.

I have stayed in this hotel twice. The first time was 12 years ago and my memory of it then was that it was a lovely hotel and in an excellent location. I returned this October and still found it lovely but with some reservations. The one outstanding problem were the pillows. They were hard and uncomfortable and were terrible to sleep on. I asked for better pillows and the management tried to get softer ones but they weren't much better. I did book the family room which was on the third floor and was large and lovely. If you have a problem with stairs make sure you don't choose a room on the third floor. The best thing about the hotel is the location. It is also a quiet space with a garden.

Yes. No TV in the room, but shampoo. Also the WiFi a bit dicey but came good over time. Still a fun hotel in a very good spot - so I'd be tempted even in the absence of free shampoo. Just in case you're American - no ice machine, no ocean view........
