Sylvie and Mark were delightful hosts, who provided us with the most perfect stay. The gîte is well equipped with everything to make the stay comfortable. We cooked meals most evenings (the kitchen had everything we needed) and ate in the outdoor garden area (gorgeous variety of flowers). Our children were perfectly content in the pool and we enjoyed the quiet. There was plenty to keep us busy in the area, and we found ourselves wanting to stay longer!

We spent a wonderful three weeks at La Samsonelle. Our hosts Sylvie and Mark both are fluent in English and French. They were welcoming and knowledgeable without being obtrusive. The gite contained a comprehensive set of brochures, maps, walking and velo guides. Sylvite and Mark also arranged a cooking class for us which was a real highlight. Sylvie also took us on a guided tour of the famous Abbaye Royale in the town. Despite having seen many abbeys, churches etc, Sylvie's tour made the abbey and it's connection to the town come alive for us. Although built in the old style the gite is very modern with a modern kitchen containing a washer/dryer, a modern bathroom and two bedrooms with good beds which sleeps six comfortably. For young families there are lots of toys and games and a travel cot. The town is lively without being touristy with restaurants, tearooms, boulangeries, specialty shops of local delicacies and a small epicerie. We have stayed in a number of gites in France and this was by far the best. Highly recommended.

Our stay at Gite La Samsonelle at Fontevraud d'Abbaye was such a delight. Such a lovely appointed comfortable accommodation, old world charm creatively renovated for modern living, the building and the superbly laid out gardens and grounds were lovingly maintained and contained all we needed for our stay. Easy to get to and with onsite parking it created a perfect base for our discovery of all that the town and surrounding region offers. So much to see and do - the grand expanse of the Abbey itself, its history is astounding, was right there on our doorstep almost. The markets of Montsoreau; the charm of Saumur and the Ponts across the Loire; the cavalry academy, the mystique of trogoldyte dwellings, the Chatelet at Breze and finding Moulin's amongst the vinyards, all within easy driving of the Gite. The hospitality of the owners, Sylvie and Mark was welcoming and helpful and with enjoyable conversation over aperitifs. We would visit again if passing back this way.

This Gite via its website promises a lot but fails to deliver -it may have struck hard times - we wonder why - but there was a number of issues that were not acceptable.

It is attached to the main house with lack of privacy and the web site did not indicate very narrow stars to the second floor.

A pool has now been developed without any safety fencing which is a huge responsible for those with children.

Other comments

Day one TV not working and accused that it was our fault. It took three weeks into our stay for it to be resolved, - no hairdryer and iron both recorder broken the day before we arrived it took another three weeks to receive a replacement hairdryer, however still no iron

It was very cold and during our stay and it was obvious that were not welcomed to replenish our wood supply. In fact it was a litigators’ nightmare to get to the woodpile. The heating came on for less than an hour per day and the wood was so green it would not burn.

The beds of both bedrooms have the hardest mattresses in France. If you sleep in the larger bedroom be prepared to accept French/ English language lessons through the adjoining door from a 0830 in the morning to 2030 at night.

All in all if you have to stay, make it a very short stay.

I'm obviously devastated to see that you didn't enjoy your stay at our gite in Fontevraud L'Abbaye especially as on your departure you expressed that your stay was everything you had hoped for.. We do have the experience of long term stays . In fact, we had an Australian couple staying with us for 5 weeks in 2012 who came back for a short stay this year. We are constantly improving the facilities for our guests and the wood burning stove is a new addition this year. It is aimed at making it cosier for our guests in addition to the central heating system that exists in the gite. I am sorry that you felt cold. If you had mentioned this to us at the time, we would have naturally put the heating on for longer. Wood is available just opposite the gîte building in the garage. If you felt unsure about replenishing supplies, we would have filled your basket up for you. You only needed to have asked. Also new for this season is the 7m by 5m sunken heated swimming pool . It conforms totally with French law as it is fitted with an alarm system and has been used in total security by families with children staying at our gite after your visit to us. I am upset that my willingness to be helpful doesn't seem to have been well perceived. Considering you didn't have a car during your five week stay, I feel that I went out of my way to offer things to you so that you could see the best of our region. I even managed to get you some tickets to see the horseriding show of the Cadre Noir in Saumur, as well as inviting you to some lovely restaurant meals in the company of people who live around here henceforth sharing a convivial time together. It is a shame that you never mentioned the intrusiveness of the language classes during your stay especially as your wife enjoyed participating in a couple of them herself! In a nutshell, I obviously cannot change your mind about our property and us, however I can only reiterate my surprise when you now label us as mediocre whilst giving the opposite impression during your stay and on your departure especially as some of the issues mentioned could have been rectified at the time.

So near the little town centre and abbey but an oasis of calm. Family owners so helpful. Ideal base for all the Loire including Saumur. Good hypermarket nearby . Not far from Tours for TGV to Paris in an hour (can easily hire bikes whne you get there! Thank you Sylvie and family for a wonderful holiday.

A magnificent gite in a perfect location close to the village centre. Everything was provided that you could ever need. Plenty of room for the four of us with a great lounge / dining room. Silvie and Marc were perfect hosts who could provide plenty of information about the area. Even booked a restaurant for us in the village as soon as we arrived - perfect at Chez Mimie especially as one of us was a vegan. Garden was stunning with a pond full of fish and frogs and a swimming pool, A perfect place to relax. Area is full of roses in bloom and it was a delight to walk down the street to the village square where there was a shop and a boulangerie which sold the best flan natural ever. Only stayed for 4 days but really wish we could have stayed longer. Perfect place for a holiday and great hosts who were there when you needed them. Plenty of places to visit within a short walk or easy drive - Fontevraud Abbey, Chinon and Villandry - all full of history and beauty. Must go back again

We had a fabulous time at La Samsonelle in Fontevraud l'Abbaye. Sylvie and Mark made us very welcome and we enjoyed relaxing in the garden and swimming pool. It is also close to many popular locations in the Loire including Chateaus, Troglodyte villages, cellars and caves. The gite is very well equipped with everything you would need for an enjoyable and relaxing holiday. Many thanks for a great stay.

Gite La Samsonelle is an amazing place to stay. The hosts Sylvie and Mark Reeves are welcoming, helpful and very discreet. The gardens are enchanting and well kept and you can hear the frog chorus as the light fades (and sometimes in the night) from the garden, which is filled with unique shrubs and trees and (in season ) an abundance of roses, which in any event proliferate in Fontevraud.

The Gite is nicely furnished and has a warm ambiance to all rooms. The kitchen is nicely equipped and easy to use. Beds are comfortable and rooms well appointed. The house is clean in its presentation.

The Location is superb. Fontevraud is magical in its own right and there is a small 'alimentation' in the village that sells basic groceries. There is also a Boulanger. Several restaurants and hotels are nearby.

The property is situated in a charming road which is quiet of traffic and people. There is quick and easy access to beautiful Montsoreau and the bords de La Loire. There is a wonderful creperie in Montsoreau (Sylvie can advise).

Everything is wonderful here!

Elizabeth and family

We stayed in this gite for a week in June. We enjoyed every minute of this holiday. The property was great, the garden well maintained and the pool was lovely. The small village is very pretty and is situated only a few miles from the Loire river. We combined cycling with sightseeing as there are plenty of thjngs to see and do. We then spent the afternoons relaxing around the pool. Sylvie and Mark are very helpful and informative on the surrounding area. This was our first gite holiday and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

We would like to say that we really enjoyed our stay at La Samsonelle in Fontevraud- l’Abbaye. Not only is it a lovely part of France but the property is a very good place to stay and it was one of the best equipped and beautifully clean houses that we have rented over our many years visiting France. The garden and the swimming pool were lovely and we spent quite a lot of our time there.

Mark and Sylvie were ideal hosts being very friendly and welcoming, and helpful when needed as well as being discreet. We would certainly recommend it as somewhere to visit and stay.
