My (now) wife and I hired the Bastide for the weekend of our wedding - we couldn't have asked for a better venue. The terrace was perfect for a sit-down dinner under the stars, the pool area was a great place for drinks before the meal (and a refreshing dip after brunch the next day). The house was big enough for us to put all our closest family members in beautiful suites. The owners, Bill and Soraya were wonderful - welcoming, helpful, discreet and always ready to help. Our guests were overwhelmed, as were we!

If you are the sort of traveler that prefers tranquility and elegance over flashy lobbies and crowed pools then Bastide Saint Mathieu will be great for you. During our two week trip to the South of France we left a less than satisfactory VRBO house a day early and headed towards Cannes where we had made a reservation at the Carleton. We looked for another place in Cannes to stay and saw that the Bastide Mathieu in nearby Grasse was available. The pictures looked great so we booked a room. This bastide/manoir which only contains 6-8 rooms surpassed our expectations by a mile. You enter through a private gate into gorgeous grounds of roses, lavender and citrus trees with a beautiful fountain and an open air seating area for breakfast.

We were greeted by Soraya who is the owner of this gem of a property. She gave us a choice of two suites on the top floor and we chose one that was truly magnificent. The room was enormous! And beautifully and tastefully decorated as was the entire property. The bastide is entirely historic with stone walls, enormous wood beams and gorgeous stairways. The room was truly wonderful with a huge walk in closet like no other I have ever seen in even the finest hotels around the world.

The grounds and gardens were beautiful as was the pool which was very relaxing and peaceful. We felt like we were the guests of a wealthy family for the weekend. This was no B&B - breakfast was as if we were guests. Soraya asked what we wanted and then went to the local boulagerie/patisserie to get us what we wanted.

I cannot over state how fantastic this place is for anyone who appreciates under stated elegance and total peace and quiet.

We rented the Bastide for a week in September, during which we held our wedding for around 90 guests as well as two other smaller events. There were 10-12 of us staying at the Bastide throughout and I couldn't fault anything. This is very much a home, so for those looking for flawless 5 star hotel or a sterile environment, it may not be right. But for us, the charm was found in the fact that the Bastide is clearly a place that has had much love put into it.

Soraya, the owner (who stayed in a separate building at the back of the property), made us feel like old friends and was the perfect host. Her attitude and warmth were an unpredicted and invaluable addition to our rental of the house. The Bastide itself was in a beautiful condition so I'm somewhat confused by earlier reviews (which had initially panicked me before arrival). The rooms are all large and unique. They may not all have perfect air conditioning but we were happy to indulge in open windows and fresh air anyway.

Soraya had a full team of gardeners and housekeepers in regularly to maintain things, all of whom were lovely. We didn't notice any problems with the outdoor furniture nor flower beds and terrace. Rooms were serviced daily and there was even someone on hand to help us clear away our meals every night.

Breakfast was served each morning in the outdoor kitchen. The events went off without a hitch, facilitated by Soraya and her team's help as well as the security/audio-visual team they regularly work with.

The grounds are diverse—a field/olive grove, a lawn with boules court, a pool area with tables, lounges and hammocks plus a large terrace and outdoor kitchen—making it perfect for parties and offering lots of space to those staying at the house.

We all felt incredibly at home at the Bastide, as you would in a private holiday rental, but supported by the staff and owner on hand. We were looking for a place to hold a wedding that felt like a lovely, summer house party and that's exactly what we had. The attitude of the Bastide is relaxed and charming. I would recommend it highly to anyone wanting to have a high-end yet easy-going, Provencal holiday or wedding. For us, the Bastide provided the perfect backdrop to what became a dreamlike week and wedding.

The matter is now a Police Matter. We were the only guests at the property. This is one of the most shocking and upstetting stays that I have ever experienced. My wife also is 7 and a half months pregnant which makes it even more disgusting and shameful. On our return from a local restaurant at 21.00 we were locked out of the hotel. After ringing the entrance bell on the gates they were opened and automatically closed behind us. What was to ensue was a farce and a disgrace. The owner Soraya was either extremely drunk or high on drugs. I was abused verbally together with my wife by Soraya who was drunk and disordily once we were inside the property. We were subjected to personal jibes, insults and a host of other things. We were so shocked that we did not know what to do. One hardly expects this of the owner of the hotel that you are staying at!!!. Especially as there were no other guests. I decided to leave the property and managed to climb over the walls and open the gate for my wife to leave. However the rental car was locked in the parking yard. The long and short of it was that we literally had to escape from the hotel as the life of our unborn child was put in danger by a careless drunk. We managed to call the Police and they had to break into the hotel with members from a local ambulance/Firebrigade who arrived to take Soraya the owner away in a pathetic state on a stretcher. I have notified Booking.com, Secret places, The Hotel Guru, The Foreign Office. And shall be contacting my local Police Station. Please be aware that I am willing to forward any person details of the above and these sites are investigating the above. This is a very serious issue that fortunately did not end in a catstrophe. To this day all I have received from the owner is an apology but no compensation!!!. A great sad situation indeed. As the hotel itself is stunning. Mostly decorated throught by Thornton Allen before it was sold to the new owner as a hotel. Although I feel sure that shortly it will cease to trade as a hotel after this event. I encourage all people to check with the above sites with regard to the above. Beware most reviews in my opinion also on Trip Advisor must be seen with caution. As the hotel was closed for a long periods of time.

Sadly where do you start !
Having corresponded in detail with the owners about our hopes/ needs for young children - we were staggered/ shocked at how poor the 'hotel' was.
The website says a luxury hotel - please be aware that it is a B&B - that is all. Breakfast is a 'continental' no cooked food offered, and there is no other 'service' during the day. The house itself is still nice, rooms of good size, but everything else has been allowed to slide into disrepair. see photos.
The Sky in the rooms was broken, the wireless was broken on our floor, the shower by the pool was broken, the coffee machine was broken, watering system for the garden was broken - you are getting the picture.
If you are a couple looking for a B&B from which to explore the area - possibly - but f you are a family that are looking for a 'luxury hotel' please do not fall into the trap of believing the title of the website, as we did.
Check the terms and conditions for the 'disrupted stay' clause - very unusual ! We left early and when you see this clause in the terms, you tend to think that we were not the first !

Response from Portobellotraveler, Owner at Bastide Saint Mathieu
Responded 3 Jan 2010
This reviewer was entertaining company and he has a charming family, who seemed to enjoy their visit and their interaction with the other guests. The main contention in both their reviews is that they had been led to believe that this was a full service hôtel. It is not and never has been ; it is a small personal houseparty hotel. Will Carling was made well aware after several telephone conversations that we either let the whole Bastide for private parties by the week or do a chambres d’hote opération without restaurant or bar or 24 hour service. In particular he asked (by email 11/08/08) if we could arrange a chef to do dinners for his party and whether or not there was a facility 'for us to keep cheese/ham etc for our basic lunches etc.' ……these are surely not the sort of questions one would ask of a full service hôtel with bar and restaurant. He had asked initially to rent most of or the ‘whole house’ for a week. However the numbers were whittled down to three rooms and then finally to just two rooms.. The relaxed and houseparty style, which has been a big success with others, may not have suited him…it is not for everyone. But no intimation of this was given. He spent four apparently happy days hère. The only problems noted were :A. that WIFI did not work in his part of the first floor, although it was working everywhere else. This is an important issue and we fully sympathise with any such complaint and got it working again as soon as we could. B. He could not get children’s TV in English on the satellite system ; again a very fair objection as it was available elsewhere in the house but not in his room. Then came his real problem…… WC told me that he had received a call asking him to meet a sports delegation from China in London and maybe this would give him the chance to head up the development of rugby in that country. It was a big financial opportunity for him but he would have to go back to London early. I wished him luck but explained that what was his big financial opportunity could not become our big financial loss and reservations, particularly peak season reservations – our irreplacable stock in trade, have to be paid in full. He said he quite understood but it was clear from his changed demeanour and attitude from then on that he did not. By the time he did leave a day or two later he first demanded not to pay for the early departure and then produced a long catalogue of complaints to support a discount together with scarcely veiled threats about what he could do to our reputation. There is little value in exchanging bric bats about opinions on decoration and garden design. Clearly Will Carling prefers a more manicured style than the Provencal lavenders and olives of our Bastide. Although disturbed by his attitude (albeit in pursuit of discount) we respect and value his opinions. However as a counter balance Bastide st Mathieu has been chosen this year as one of just 8 establishments in all of France to be featured as ‘Cool Hotels ; Best of Europe’ (Fusion Publishing), one of just 40 world wide ‘Inspirations’ of Kuoni, and one of the launch establishments for Mr and Mrs Smith France….. It was also chosen by Hermes of Paris for a series of private presentations and launches plus several repeat bookings (I don’t think Hermes do ‘fading’ or ‘dilapidated’). As I write Grazia magazine have arrived for a 3 day photo shoot for Chanel and others’s summer collection. ……and we are, as WC rightly to points out, just a small chambres d’hotes, not a fully fledged resort. Worth mentioning… WC suggests that Valbonne is the closest place for local restaurants / villages ; an odd comment…... Valbonne is indeed a very pretty local village (max 10/12 minutes not 20 ) but it is not by any means the nearest given that we are hère on the edge of the celebrated town of Grasse (where WC told me he found and visited a McDonalds’ restaurant), Also much closer than Valbonne are Opio, with its little square and Church, Chateauneuf de Grasse, one of the finest of the ‘villages perches’, Plascassier, Pre du Lac etc …all with their own restaurants ; indeed there are three Michelin stars within a few minutes of the Bastide, all much closer than Valbonne. (We have a list of over 70 local restaurants, regularly updated with guests comments and suggestions). We very much welcome and react to criticism. Whatever the motivation of this reviewer, we still take careful note of his comments and have asked others to review with these with as critical an eye as possible.

Bastide St Mathieu is a beautiful country house owned by a charming and pleasant couple who live in the house and run it as a luxury hotel with 5 suites. The standard of accomodation was very high (beautifully decorated rooms, CD stereo, TV, nice bathroom) and the owners provided a high level of service, including bringing you drinks at the pool or bottles of wine to your room (soft drinks are free; wine/beer are at reasonable prices). A nice (big) breakfast is served every morning. The main disadvantage was the inability to have lunch or dinner at the hotel - there are no restaurants or shops in walking distance so you have to drive from the hotel to find lunch and dinner everyday. Also, while this is a matter of personal preference, in a hotel of this type (i.e., very small with owners in residence) you give up a certain amount of anonymity/privacy that you would get in a larger hotel with more staff. Certainly a very nice place but in our view not good value given the high price.

We went to this hotel, mistakenly believing what we read on the website - that it was a small luxury hotel.
The shock that the reality was so different really was awful. Although there were acres of garden for the children to play to quote the owner, our daughter got a splinter the first time she played on the rubble that is the reality of the garden.
The pool has cracks all the way around in the stones and the shower does not work.
There is a simple and cold continental breakfast and after that not a hint of any service, in fact you are made to feel you are being a pain if you hand around the property and do not just leave to explore after breakfast. Hence this might just about work for a couple, just about, but for families it is a disaster. There is no local village, no local restaurants to head out to with the children - Valbonne is the nearest and that is at least 15-20 minutes in a car - a nightmare with hungry kids on the windy roads.
No doubt a few years ago this property looked lovely and the house still has potential, but everything around it looks dilapidated and broken.
Our advice would be please do not fall for the idea that this is a luxury hotel like we did

Please refer to response to September 6 review below, which deals with the specific points raised and explains what the reviewer sought to gain from this criticism, which other reviewers dispute. Meanwhile here is a challenge......if one guest (or tenant) can find a representative of any of the luxury hotel or villa marketing groups, who will genuinely endorse even a half of 'Sheffield's' comments, then they will have a free stay. This is a 'houseparty' private hotel in which there is often a lot of interaction amongst guests. It seems to attract an interesting and discerning selection of guests from all over the world. It's style we understand has been admired and even copied. However it clearly is not to everyone's taste and maybe 'Sheffield' should have considered as an alternative the excellent Club Med nearby. It is not 'full service' and there is no restaurant, although dinners and lunches can be arranged when guests wish. Drinks and refreshments are available on an honesty bar basis in an exceptionally relaxed atmosphere.

Wedding venue which was two years in the planning. The house has a stunning position and the rooms are large. Obviously a home that is well loved. But as a venue which is expensive to hire for a weekend it fails on several fronts. Air conditioning did not work and temperatures were in the 30's. Dishwasher full of owners crockery and glassware which needed washing. No designated fridge for guests and fridges full of owners food and drink. Poor quality fridges that either did not work or were grubby. Insufficient crockery such as mugs for coffee and tea but hundreds of unnecessary crockery. Nowhere allocated for guests food storage. Kitchen needed a good clean. Morning before wedding there was broken glass, unsafe flagstones, cigarette butts and dog mess on lawn. Manager was rude and unhelpful and obviously not interested in customer service. Said she "had been running round for us all day" which shows what she feels about giving good service. Hiring the entire house out has to ensure guests have a clean kitchen with storage space. Pool dirty. Pool and garden furniture not arranged and it,just looked as though the last guests had pushed things to the side and that was now we found it. Some bulbs not working and some sun umbrellas broken. There needs to be more staff on site and standards need to be much higher considering the cost charged. We are not wealthy people and had saved hard for this venue and were bitterly disappointed. It is advertised as a luxury villa but it is certainly not.

We rented Bastide St. Mathieu for a full week for our daughter's June 28, 2014 wedding. The grounds had just been cleaned before we arrived and cleaned again the day before the wedding. The full landscape team was out pulling weeds and blowing everything off. The lavender was in full bloom and absolutely gorgeous!!! They could use a few more flowers around the fountain in the courtyard - but the super nice Irish landscaper had taken over recently and was working hard to make everything pristine and perfect. I just can't imagine anyone being dissapointed with this beautiful setting….I thought it was just this side of heaven!! They had just finished changing some of the air conditioning units and they worked perfect for us. We knew going in that not everything is air-conditioned, but that is kind of what you expect in a house that old. Most of the bedrooms have air-conditioning and for the ones that don't the air at night is normally pleasantly cool and so you just throw your windows open. The housekeeper is super nice and fixes a very yummy breakfast - I recommend it highly (extra charge). And Maria, the manager, was lovely to work with…just as agreeable and friendly as can be. I will agree with one point of the previous reviewer - it might be time for some new outdoor cushions - we removed them for the reception, the wood furniture was very nice without them. We all had the most wonderful time. It was really a dream wedding and reception!!

I'm so surprised by the negative reviews...our experience was completely different. The grounds and interior exceeded our expectations. In fact, I don't think the pictures on the website do it justice. The owner Soraya was charming and went out of her way to make certain our needs were met. She went beyond her hosting duties to ensure we had an amazing experience and we did...it was absolutely magical! I highly recommend this venue for a romantic getaway, wedding, family gathering, or retreat.

The bad report appeared to be a written by an aggressive man who tried to bully Soraya and the detail seems to be incorrectly biased his way.Soraya 's interpretation of events are completely different and believable. Don't worry about the review. The Bastide is not flawless and in areas probably needs attention ...but these areas are minimal and to be honest adds a bit of character? What the Bastide delivers is a magnificent home for the wedding rather than a hotel and is yours to do what you wish for ....treat it as if was yours ?Soraya encourages this . It is an outside event only and if you have a large wedding(50 plus)there are no alternatives if the weather changes. We organised a large canopy to shelter from the sun or rain because our weekend had unsettled weather. The canopy was amazing ,chic and added to our experience . The comments from our invited guests was that it was probably the" wedding of the year" in terms of the location .That sums it up for me .
