Star Hôtel is an above-average budget hotel in a convenient location. It is somewhat typical of Southern European 2- or 3-star city hotels in the sense that it is a balancing act of friendly staff and substandard facilities. It does, however, have a strength that puts it above the similarly-priced independent hotels in Nice – location.

Star Hôtel sits on Rue Biscarra, a small street that is about halfway between Gare de Nice Ville (main train station) and Promenade du Paillon, the northern boundary of Vieux Nice (old town). It is one block away from Avenue Jean Médecin, the main north-south artery of the city as well as a major shopping street. The tram line 1 passes through this Avenue, and in fact the tram stop Jean Médecin is very close to Rue Biscarra. The train station, Vieux Nice, as well Musée Marc Chagall can all be reached on foot, and the tram line leads to the bus terminal at Vauban for day trips. A Monoprix as well as Nice Étoile (a large shopping center) are at the intersection between Rue Biscarra and Avenue Jean Médecin, and there is a Carrefour City (supermarket) one block to the east, on Rue de Lépante. Overall, we think this location is more convenient to Vieux Nice as a multi-purpose base camp.

The hotel itself is, as we mentioned, a typical Southern European affair, housed in a humble yet relatively clean building with a simple façade. The ground floor contains the reception, a breakfast hall, and a small lounge that seems to be more often used for storing guest baggage. There is no elevator, so guests have to haul up the luggage to their rooms on the floors above. The said rooms are stocked with low-cost furnishing – in our case, a bed with worn mattress, two mini side-tables, an open closet, a tiny desk, and two folding chairs. Not too much space for putting stuff on. Our bathroom had a hair dryer (a plus), a liquid soap, and two bar soaps that were not replenished until asked for. The bathroom lacked ventilation system and instead had a large window. This probably explains the large colony of mold on the ceiling. Other than the colony, both the room and the bathroom were sufficiently clean.

The sleeping quality ties in to the location and the building. Like most Provençal buildings, there is no soundproofing, and an adjacent street has motorcycle parking spaces. There can be occasional loud noise from motorcycles, and in a couple of nights our sleep was interrupted by drunken people making commotions that lasted a couple of hours. This noise might be the reason people do not keep the bathroom window open for ventilation during the night. In early mornings we could see some of these drunkards still sleeping on Rue Biscarra (yes, on the street, near the rear side of Nice Étoile). So as not to give wrong impression, we’d like to make it clear that the nearby streets are quite safe despite the street-sleepers (Nice is no Marseille). Interestingly, these street-sleepers didn’t seem to be homeless, and would change every morning; middle-aged men on one day, hippy girls on another, etc. In addition to the commotions, one of us had problem with sleeping because the mattress did not provide firm support in the middle.

Staff quality is variable, in that the front desk is capable while housekeeping is below-average. Of the three receptionists we met, one Swedish lady and a young gentleman spoke fluent English, and were very friendly and observant. Housekeeping, on the other hand, seemed to have two distinct levels of quality; on some days it was up to mid-range chain hotel standard, and on other days the bed was barely made. We joked that there must be two maids, a good one and a poor one.

Overall, Star Hôtel is a typical Provençal economy hotel whose facility, amenity, and sleep quality may or may not meet the expectations of North American, Northern European, or East Asian travelers. The hotel however does have some merits, such as its excellent location, and its price is competitive among the centrally located Nice hotels. While not a top recommendation, we would not mind including it in a candidate list of budget-friendly lodgings to be considered for a holiday in Nice.

We just got back from a romantic little weekend trip to Nice, and we stayed at the Hotel Star in Nice. Near the old part of the city, it's convenient to the train station, on bus lines and easily accessible by car.

A quiet 2 star hotel, it's clean and comfortable, but the service is what makes the hotel really shine!

Our room was on the second floor - note: there are no elevators in the building, overlooking one of the quiet streets. With doublepaned window and the traditional green wooden shutters, we didn't hear even minimal morning traffic.

The Star offers a nice contential breakfast, croissants, tea, coffe and juice, with a couple of different types of bread as well. You have your choice of jams, butter and honey, and everything is served to your table.

The rooms are small, but tastefully decorated, and our room had a combination tub/shower. There is also a color television (small, but adequate), a hair dryer and heating and air conditioning.

The hotel manager made sure that our every need was attended to, and he gave us some great advice about where to go, what to see and some of the best "local" restaurants.

If you're planning a trip to Nice and don't want to spend a lot of money on hotel rooms, I recommend the Star Hotel.

Great central location close to railway station and old town. In a street with good restaurants at reasonable prices. Rooms modern and clean. We had a room on the top floor, very quiet. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. We have stayed at two other hotels in Nice and this by far the best value for money. Would not stay anywhere else now

Just arrived home from a lovely 4 day jaunt to Nice. Stayed at the Star hotel and very suitable for what we wanted. Central to all of Nice and close to the Old Town where all the good restaurants are. Small but adequate rooms and excellent value for money. Would stay there again. Clean rooms and very, very friendly staff. We didnt eat breakfast at the hotel as we shopped around for different ones. Best breakfast if you looking for a very hearty breakfast is at Wayne's Bar in the old town but they dont open until 10am.

We went to this hotel about five months ago now, but I wanted to write a review so I'll remember it for my next trip to Nice!
It's a great little two-star hotel, that rare find in France - a budget hotel which hits the spot, clean rooms, non offensive decor, good location and a decent night's sleep. It's on one of the roads off the main shopping street, but is quite a lively street on its own with several restos and cafes. We headed back into the main tourist area for our evening meal, but I kind of regretted it as we passed several cafes on our street with great menus and very reasonable prices.
Our room was on the first floor and looking out onto the street, but I slept fine and I'm a light sleeper so I think the windows might have been double glazed.
All in all, a very positive experience. If you're looking for luxury then you'll be disappointed, but if you just want a decent place to kip at a reasonable price then Star Hotel fits the bill.

We booked to stay at this hotel months in advance. When our flights changed, we emailed and received confirmation that our booking had been changed. A few days before we were due to leave, we received an email asking why we hadn't arrived, so we contacted them saying we weren't due for a few days and sent the booking confirmation, as proof of the change. The manager emailed to say that Alfredo had left the hotel and hadn't made our change.

They kindy found another hotel for us to stay in for 2 nights and we were due to stay with the hotel star on the 3rd night. There was clearly some communication error between the 2 hotels and upon checking out of the first hotel, we were told that the Hotel Star had called to ask us to stay at the first one for our 3rd night. It wasn't ideal but we went ahead.

Once back in the UK, I discovered the Hotel Star had taken 75Euro as 'no show' fee, despite admitting their error. It has taken 6 weeks, countless email and a legal letter, in French to get our money back.

I'm sure the hotel is ok, but if the manager is happy to lie to customers when a mistake has been made, then there is a problem. AVOID AT ALL COST

We stayed here in August 2004. They had no record of our reservation on arrival but there was a room available. We paid 55 euro. The room was not very clean upon arrival. There was hair on the sheets and I asked for clean sheets to change myself. However, the bathroom was pretty clean. The room was small and it was quite a walk to the beach but we did not mind it considering the price we were paying. Hotel Star is close to shopping and there is a monoprix grocery store located close by.

We were here for 2 nights. Go with a map. It is a very small hotel actually, we didn't know, so we were looking for something a little bigger and failed to locate it for sometime. and then when we saw it, we were like, hmm. We went in, got it confirmed that this was the very hotel we booked and headed to our room. The room was very small..and even smaller was the bathroom. The shower area was a small box, so in case your soap fell down while having your bath, you would have a tough time bending down and picking it up! It was ok for an average built person like me (I am not even tall), but for someone who is above 5ft 8, weighing more than 65, it would be a task!
The breakfast was not bad, the usual- french breads, cheeses, juices, fruits...the staff very friendly. The location was what drove us to choosing this hotel. Centrally located, 15mins walk from the beach-the hotel even gives you beach towels.
Recommend you to head back early to the hotel as it gets quite dark and lonely here. Otherwise it is a good place to stay, not very pricey, considering you will be out the whole day and at the hotel only to sleep and for breakfast.

This is a really unusual review for me. Usually I am reviewing the accommodations and this location ( which by the way is excellent).
This time I'm reviewing attitude. I booked for a Tuesday and realized that the Chagall and Matisse museums were closed.
I went on the website and rebooked for a Monday and it was half price with a free breakfast. Nice. !
When I arrived I asked about the " Monday discount ". I was informed that a new assistant messed up the website and that the half price was an error.
I said do you want me to make up the difference ?
The response is all you need to know ---- " no sir it was our mistake. Enjoy your stay ".
Good location -spotlessly clean and honest decent management at a great price. End of story.
Book it. You will not regret it. Have a great time.
