Very basic hostel in an old building. It is one floor, about 8 rooms. Rough kitchen is the only space to congregate,Rooms were okay, with 2 bunk beds, basic small bathroom. Walls are very thin, the guy in the next room was a snorer, he kept me up a couple nights. Lots of exposed wires in the stairwell, with all the hallway clutter, there is potential fire hazard. People are nice, good location, comfy beds. Good security, need a fob and 2 keys to get into your room

I have to say, I'm a little shocked by all of the glowing reviews of this hostel. It's not that we had a horrible experience, but it was far from what all of the positive reviews said it would be. My husband and I had a private room and it was as small as it could possibly be. When it's July and hot outside, that makes for a pretty uncomfortable night of sleep. We had a private bathroom, but the shower felt unclean enough that we wore flip flops in it. The sink was so tiny and had a little glass shelf right over it which made it nearly impossible to wash up.

I'm guessing that we were not the target demographic for this hostel since we are married and in our 30s. We were unable to participate in the group pub crawl happening that night and it looked like they regularly organized other events too. I will say that the young guy who runs the place was incredibly nice and helpful, which was really great. The hostel is also in the perfect location in relation to both the main square/street and Old Town. You can walk to the tram stop and take it to the train station if you don't want to walk the entire way. Finally, there is no breakfast provided at the hostel, but there is a wonderful bakery with fresh croissants around the corner. This is definitely a good place for young backpackers, but others may want to consider a hotel.

We booked a room for four with an ensuite shower at Victoria Meuble for a weekend in Nice. The location is very convenient as it is just off the main street, Avenue Felix Faure. The host is also very welcoming and friendly and provided us with everything we need. He even thoughtfully lent the girls a hair dryer. The room is well equipped with lockers for each of us. The only disappointment was the size of the shower - it's quite small even for small-sized asians. There was only one mains socket in the room but this can be easily overcome by bringing a multi-plug (or ask for one from the host). Overall, it was a very pleasant stay.

First of all, the hostel is in a perfect location. It's close to the beach, the old city, plenty of shopping, buses to Monaco & Cannes, and just a short tram ride away from the train station.

However, the hostel itself is tiny, cramped, badly lit, and not super inviting. Reception is an itty-bitty room off the main hallway, across from the itty-bitty kitchen. There is only one small table at the kitchen, so there usually wasn't much space for everyone to sit and eat. The sponges were usually fresh and clean, which I appreciated, but it seemed like the cutlery was always dirty and I always had to wash my dishes both before and after using them.

The room was small, with one tiny window in an awkward corner, letting in absolutely no light. The overhead light was no help either, as it was extremely dim. (You would not be able to read anything by the light of that main lamp.) It was impossible to do my makeup well, and I'm sure I looked like I let a preschooler do my face every day.

The light in the bathroom wasn't any better. It's very bright, but it's one harsh fluorescent light at a weird angle, like the most unflattering fitting room you've ever been in. It cast bizarre shadows on some parts of my face while lighting others up with blinding light.

The rest of the bathroom was pretty bad too. It was so tiny you could barely turn around inside. The flush button always got stuck, so the toilet would run endlessly, unless you manually un-flushed. The water in the shower was usually chilly. I got it all the way up to "moderately lukewarm" once.

One of the staff members was also a traveller, just staying for about a month, and she was staying in my room. This was a little bit weird to have someone as both a roommate and a staff member. She was very nice, very friendly and helpful... but she was also extremely loud all the time. So I didn't feel comfortable complaining about her to the staff as I would a normal roommate because she was also on the staff. And I didn't feel comfortable complaining about her as a staff member, because she was also my roommate with whom I wanted to maintain a good relationship. So I know it's common for hostels to provide lodging for their staff, but I think it makes an awkward situation when the staff and guests are in the same room.

The manager, Val, is lovely. A few times I saw her come in to check that the cleaning was done properly, which is great. However, she wasn't around most of the time, so it was usually other staff members I was dealing with.

The hostel does not have guest laundry. They did point me to a (very cute) laundromat nearby. It's a decent price, but it's self-service so you have to hang around and take care of your own stuff--bring a book or something!

The hostel also does not have a printer, and I don't know how a business can function without one nowadays! But good luck if you need to print a train ticket or boarding pass! There are other shops where it can be done, but I was there on Easter Sunday and nowhere else was open, so I was just lucky that I found another hotel that took pity on me and let me print my ticket there.

This probably sounds like a pretty terrible place, and it is definitely one of the worst hostels I've been to in all of Europe. But I talked to some other girls staying at a different hostel nearby and theirs sounded a thousand times worse, so I think this one is not too bad compared to Nice in general. (I've noticed that French hostels, as a rule, are pretty bad compared to the rest of Europe.) So I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 2 because, well, you could do worse. It was a safe place to sleep, if nothing else.

The location was good ( close to the ocean and the promenade des anglais) but the room was not very clean...especially the shower in the bathroom. There was a ton of mold in the shower and on the shower curtain.

Stayed in this hostel for 3 nights with a friend and it was awful!!!
Having both experienced pleasant hostels all over the world, after reading the excellent reviews for this place we were very excited about our break in Nice. Upon arrival however, we were dumfounded with what we saw..... The entire place was filthy (and not in a way a quick vacuum and mop would solve). It appears that fixtures & fittings have not been replaced for about 70years and the bathroom contained a build up of mould. There is a cat that lives in the hostel & roams around freely including laying on "clean" towels & linen. He didn't however seem to be a deterrent from a mouse that my friend encountered. When discussing this with the owner she was called a liar and that we should stay in a hotel as we were antisocial and unfriendly (this was due to our polite decline of joining a pub crawl). It's clear that it is his way or the high way and all professionalism goes out of the window!!!
The only reason i have given this hostel 1 star is that the location is very good- this allowed for a quick getaway every morning!!!

Response from victoriameuble, Owner at Open House Nice
Responded 27 Aug 2015
This is the first time in 4 years I reply to a review, but I have to since it's simply not true. When we spoke about the mice they saw they also told me it was OUTSIDE the hostel! (check other 1000 online reviews on hostelworld and hostelbookers and you will never see the word mouse, cause there aren't any) We clean the rooms everyday not sure what this is about, once again see other reviewers! This hostel is like a small family of people sharing experiences and taking the best of what Nice has to offer. And yes we have a cat but if you don't like him it doesn't mean you are allowed to treat him in the way you treated him! ( I saw them chasing and percussing the cat ) Come and have fun with us :) Nice is better at Victoria House

I went to Nice in July with my parents. We stayed at Victoria Meuble hostel for 4 nights.
There's no denying that it is definitely a youth hostel, not really meant for older people.
We did not expect a whole lot more, though, because we knew we were going to stay at a budget hostel.
Some of the things bothered me a little bit, though, there was no place to eat. We had breakfast every morning in our room but had to sit on the beds and create a table out of two stools from the room.
They could also use an air conditioner as it gets REALLY hot in nice during the summer.

Bunkbeds were not comfortable and were making a lot of noise even if you tried to move a tiny bit...

The receptionist was a young guy who was always very nice and helpful. Sometimes we saw him going out on the beach with the hostel guests, which I thought was very nice.

Location is absolutely perfect!!

Bring earplugs with you if you want to sleep well because you will hear all kinds of noises (especially from the corridor) to the room really well.
