Just back from "hotel de VERDUN" in NICE where we'd stay for a week late september.

We found the hotel to be really different from other places we have been so far.
It's just like home..I mean, Reception area is on the first floor, so you have to climb up a small marble and wooden stair, and then well...it's just like my grand'ma flat. A bit old-fashioned but clean and well looked after. Our room then was very large, compared to usual european ( and french ) standards, and specially in this kind of budget hotel.
Looks like the owner are keen on antiques, as our room was fitted with a massive wooden buffet, and the rest was about the same, not the usual standard furnitures that can be found all over europe in most hotels.

The location was excellent, and the staff helpful and courteous, speaking fluent english.

If you're looking for a budget hotel quiet, clean and with a really familial atmosphere, then this one is for you.
If you're looking for a so-called hype or a top-fashionnable place, then you might be a bit disappointed...

If we knew about this hotel, would have stayed from the first day.but better late than never. The hotel is situated right at the heart of Nice, near the bus stop "hostel de poste" and train station is 10 minutes walking.old town, beach,
fruit and flowers market, opera, shopping street -everything is near.they have a decent tarrif including an awesome breakfast.if you are travelling with family or as couple, this is the ideal place.staffs are extremely well behaved and friendly. Rooms are clean, bathroom is small but well equipped.Free wifi available.you can enjoy the street view from above.little bit noise will come,if your room is streetside, but that is mostly from the people living nearby hostel. With all the advantages, I happily ignored it, and next time in Nice, I am definitely gonna stay here.

I stayed here for a weekend with friends and would highly recommend this hotel. 5 min walk from the old centre. Right by the main shopping streets and buses & trams to other parts of the Nice area.
Tastefully furnished airco rooms on the street side (no noise though!). Recently decorated bathroom. Our Airco had a problem but was fixed without any hassle by Hughes and his team. Breakfast had everything you needed with excellent coffee and news papers. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

I stayed 5 nights in this nice, two star hotel as a 50+ woman travelling solo. While my room was comfortable, but basic, the bathroom was huge and included a soaking tub. The room was quiet and the wifi worked well. The location is great - safe and close to the tram and shopping. I thought the breakfast was excellent. As much coffee and tea as you wanted and a selection of meats, cheese and eggs. Easy to reach on the #98 bus from the airport. Get off at Vielle Ville, cross the park and head up Rue Lycee. Under a ten minute walk from the bus stop. I arrived late at night, hungry, and there was still a small grocery around the corner that was open.

Our first visit to Nice, greatly enjoyed a five night stay at the Verdun. The hotel was recommended by a family member (otherwise we would have stayed somewhere a little more expensive). The Verdun is a two star hotel, and expectations must be at that level. Our expectations were exceeded. This is an old traditional hotel, perfectly situated for exploring Nice by tram and bus. The beach, the Opera house, trams and busses, and a plethora of varied restaurants are close by.

Whilst old and traditional, improvements are being made to the Verdun. There is a lift, rooms have flat-screen tv's; and our beds were very comfortable. There is free wifi through (although the speed is currently very slow). Three other positive factors stand out: first, the cleanliness of the hotel throughout. Second, the pleasant ambience of the breakfast room, and the excellent value of the €10 breakfast. Third, the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff.

The Verdun is not a place to stay if you intend to linger for long periods in your room, and wish to avail of comfy chairs and striking views. However it is highly recommended if you need a perfectly situated comfortable base to sleep, whilst spending most of your time outside exploring the many delights that Nice has to offer. On that basis, the Verdun is excellent value.

The only good point about this hotel is it's location.

A superior room was booked through a hotel booking agency, but the hotel flatly refused to honour this booking stating that the price we paid covered only a standard room.

The room was of a very poor standard.

The room decoration was grubby and the carpet was very dirty. There was loose electrical wiring and a socket came away when the hairdryer was unplugged. The walls were so thin you could hear your neighbours snoring! You could not leave the window open at night because of the noise.

The bathroom was minute and filthy. It was in need of urgent redecoration. It was impossible to have a decent shower, as the shower head was only 1 metre from ground level. The shower temperature could not be regulated and ranged from scolding to cold and sometimes in between. Some of the towels they supplied were more like sandpaper. When using the loo you needed to duck under the tower rail.

We didn't dare try the breakfast and only used the hotel for sleeping after one or two drinks.

I would not recommend this hotel.

Booked this hotel by reading the advises from tripadvisor, stayed for 2 nights in September 2014 with 89e/night. Location is great but that's all to say.

The room is very poor condition, and the bathroom, I can't find words to describe. What i mean is if what you are looking for is location, go for it, if not, forget it.

A friend and I checked into the Hotel de Verdun really as just a stopping point before we were both moving on elsewhere on holidays. I had read the mixed reviews but thought how bad can it be? All we needed was somewhere to sleep at night.

On arriving, we had to carry our cases up a double staircase to reach reception, which was difficult. Not sure why the lift only starts on the reception floor?! We checked in and were told we must pay the day before leaving, not at checkout, which seemed a little bizarre. You also have to leave your key at reception every time you go out.

But these things are trivial compared to the room I received. My friend was lucky and got a room that seemed more modern, with a tiled floor and therefore looked clean. Although when she opened the door to her room she found a toilet and sink immediately on her right, with only a curtain separating this from the room, and the shower was beside her bed! What??!!

My room was what can only be described as disgusting. The carpet was absolutely covered in stains. I have stayed in many hotels, good and bad, but I have never seen anything quite this bad. The paint on the walls was scuffed, the furniture was old and falling apart, there was no ceiling light so once it got dark there was only a very dim bedside lamp. (It wasn't even working when I arrived, though they did fix it.) I plugged a charger into one of the electrical sockets and when I tried to take it out the whole socket came out of the wall exposing the wiring. Even the door handles and light switches were grubby and dirty and I didn't want to touch them. The beds are covered in a brown velour bedspread, which I'm guessing doesn't get washed often. I took mine off and laid it on the floor to avoid walking on god knows what type of stains in my bare feet.

Strangely the rooms have very modern, nice bathrooms, and flat screen TVs. Clearly the owners take no pride in cleanliness and just think throwing modern stuff in makes a good room.

After one night's stay, the owner then asked me to go on the internet and cancel my 2nd night's stay via laterooms.com because he has to pay them 10-15% commission, and he'd prefer me to pay him directly. I told him I didn't have time as I was going shopping. When I returned I made an excuse to leave and he made me pay for the 2nd night anyway as it was 4pm. I didn't argue - I just wanted out. I found a lovely hotel up the road, the Best Western Alba, who offered me a 'privilege room' for 69 euros, only 15 more than the dump I'd been in. I jumped at it and my new room is spacious, clean and modern, and the staff could not have been more helpful.

If you are thinking about staying in Nice, do not go to the Hotel de Verdun, it should be called Hotel de Dump!

We just stayed in hotel de Verdun. Hotel is located next to Lafaytte-department store, near Place Massena and not far from old town and beach. Hotel was average 2 star hotel. Rooms were spacious and quite clean. There was TV and fan in the room. We didn´t hear traffic noise because of good windows, but walls were thin. Reception is located in the first floor so you have climb stairs to get there. There is elevator in the first floor. Staff was very friendly.

The reason to go here is not for a fancy hotel... it is the location, right by Galleries Lafayette, the old town, and light rail. Aline is amazing ... she provided us with very helpful information for all our area and Monaco travels.

No,the hotel doesn't offer transfers to the airport. There is a shuttle bus which drops you nearby and then it's a 5-10 walk to the hotel.
