La Folle Douce is a lovely hotel, amazing architecture and history and a superb location. We booked 11 months in advance and requested two quiet rooms next to each other. We were over the hall to each other and one room was opposite the lift (hardly quiet). We were there for a birthday celebration trip and the birthday celebrator got zero sleep on three of the four nights due to the lift & the general partying in rooms until 4am. It was more like staying in a hotel on the Ibiza strip! We did complain to the manager and he just said the hotel was full so he couldn't move us.

We were surprised to find out that you had to book going to the pool (Yes I get having to book spa treatments but to have to book to have a dip is rather bonkers) so beware and make sure you book as soon as you can (they only take bookings 24 hours in advance and unhelpfully the spa doesn't open until 10am so you will most likely be on the slopes when you make the call!

Breakfast was super and there is loads of choice...coffee is great too (which helps when you've had no sleep!).

Other than the staff at breakfast the staff generally didn't give the impression they wanted to be there or serve. You'll wait and wait for a drink in the lounge bar of an evening - just go to the bar yourself!

We had two Access Rooms and the fact there is only only one bedside table and one small wardrobe is just odd. Half of our clothes just got folded and put on the floor - there is room for another one the opposite side of the room but it's almost as if they 'forgot'.

It is ski in ski out but you will probably queue for a while due to ESF and the button lift not really being able to take the amount of people using it.

The ski hire and ski/boot room is epic, the boys down there are amazing, we pre booked and everything was waiting for us and we never had an issue finding space to store our gear at the end of the day.

The Pizza place in the garden by the Apres Ski bar is epic and they're so good if you want changes to what they usually do. Amazing pizzas and with an aperol in hand it was rather nice to enjoy post a day on the hill.

Would I recommend it? No, not really.
I don't think I would go back either.

Dear Claire, Thanks a lot for your comment. We are glad that the overall experience seems to have been good. We regrets that you haven't slept well and that you are hesiting to come back. We hope to see you again, maybe during summer, the atmosphere is different and Chamonix have a lot of things to offfer as this period.

The hotel was a fantastic base for a few days skiing. We had a premier room in the annex building of the hotel where the spa was. The room was spacious, really comfortable and shower was amazing! It was also really quiet, would definitely recommend a room in this building after reading some reports below. Nice tea and coffee machine in the room although had to mostly get milk from the bar.
The hotel itself is full of energy particularly at night. Apres ski bar was good particularly when the live band is on, pizza takeout on the terrace was great and we loved the aerial shows in the hotel lobby. The main lounge is a comfortable place to sit and relax during the day before the music gets turned up in the evening. We had the breakfast one day which was amazing but as wasn't included in our package would have been a little expensive to do every day (19 euros each).
We liked the pool area. You had to book particularly in the evenings but that meant it was never too busy. Availability was always there for the time we wanted with 24 hours notice. Pool itself was spectacular with views of the mountains but could have been a couple of degrees warmer...although only a short warm to the steamroom/sauna afterwards!
Hotel has a drag lift right outside that takes you up to the plan praz gondola (short walk across a road) that links to the Brevent-Flegere ski area. Otherwise there are daily buses from the hotel to the main ski areas or resort bus stops a short walk away.

Great location with some nice amenities and beautiful views from our room. However, I’m giving it a low rating because our room had a draft and was very cold our first night and not so decent WiFi service. The manager did provide a heater for the remainder of our stay. Luckily our room faced the sun during the day, but we were either touring or our skiing. The WiFi stopped working on the second day. I inquired about it several times and was told several excuses: 1. It was slow because there were so many people in the hotel. If you’re planning a company retreat, a major conference, think twice about having it at this location especially if you’ll need WiFi service. 2. It slows down often and affects their work as well. I called the front desk at 3am and asked if WiFi had been turned back in and was told that it still wasn’t working. Go figure!

Pluses: Hotel is close to the ski slopes. 3-4 restaurants on-site. Friendly cleaning staff and front desk staff during the day. Night staff didn’t answer phone calls. Nightly entertainment during dinner, 2 very popular night clubs, so be prepared for noisy patrons on the weekends,
yelling in the halls occasionally, and you’ll hear the music as well when trying to sleep. A double bed room is very tight so make sure you get along with your roomie. The toilet is in its own closet. So you’ll come out the toilet and go into the next room with the sink and shower. A luggage rack wasn’t available so you may have to put your dirty suitcase on the bed to remove items. Bring your own washcloths. We were informed that France hotels only provide a hand towel and bath towel for each guest. We found that to be true in Paris as well. However, they provided extras when requested. Breakfast and dinner options were good.

Reading the reviews prior to my stay, I pretty much knew what to expect. If you are unfamiliar with the brand you may feel misled, this is a party hotel. There will be drinking, there will be late night parties, there will be unruly folks screaming in the courtyard @ 2:00AM etc etc . . . I did NOT and probably would NOT bring my children here, there were children there however and they have child care. It IS reasonably place for SKI IN / SKI OUT, yes you take a tow rope and yes you have to walk to the Gondola, but it takes 5 mins at most, no biggie if you ski regularly. The ROOM, I got an access room as I was traveling solo, I'd say one other person at most would fit, it was perfect for me by myself and all my gear, no way I'd put 4+ people in an ACCESS or Bunk Bed room. Food was good also. For the price, I felt it was a very good value as a solo traveler. Pro shop on site was sweet, ski storage was also great, check in was easy, place was "cool" design, pre-paid lift ticket was at the desk when I arrived . . . Anyway, I'd go back for sure.

Location is great but staff were far from helpful when our room was repeatedly filled with cigarette smoke from a neighbouring room. The hotel's solution was for us to move into a smaller room, without a view of Mt Blanc, rather than deal with the person flaunting the no smoking rule! We were incredulous at how incredibly unhelpful and clueless the reception staff were when reporting this to them time and again and for the serious aggrevation this had caused to a pre existing chest condition. With no air conditioning available we had no choice but to close our window in the 30 degree heat and suffer an incredibly uncomfortable couple of nights and even exit our room five times. All we received were empty apologies with zero offer of anything to help make amends for this ruining our stay. By far the worst customer service either of us had received despite costing over £150 a night. To add insult to injury you also have to pay over 20 euros a day to park your car at the hotel!

It is an incredibly busy hotel with a club like atmosphere in the evening and noisy children ruining any serenity around the swimming pool during the day. Also, the bar staff are totally disinterested in serving customers, preferring to spend their time chatting to one another, locals and the unnecessary security staff.

Neither of us will return and we would certainly not recommend the hotel to anyone. In summary, a huge disappointment and waste of money!

We stayed over new year to welcome in 2020 .
What the hotel do well they are exceptional at and what they do badly is a really poor .

Firstly it is not a ski in and ski out hotel . The lift appears to have been broken for quite some time with no attempt to fix , so if that is a deal breaker for you , definitely clarify . We had driven from the UK so were able to get to the slopes . If you have no transport it’s either a steep 15 minute walk up the piste to the nearest gondola or the displeasure of walking and waiting for packed buses at sporadic times . Chamonix is a very spread out resort which has not been purpose built so be mindful !

The rooms were okay , we had the family room and the bunk bed lay out was really fun .
The super king bed was made of 2 mattresses so you often dipped in the middle quite significantly. The noise from the corridors at all time of the night is horrendous , as it’s a party hotel you will often have drunk people running around and shouting in the corridor which was a nightly occurrence.

The restaurants are good especially Le petit cuisine but book in advance . As often full and short staffed .

The entertainment for NYE and the menu was utterly dazzling . 7 delicious courses and live music and acts . It was a spectacular.

The spa is mediocre , the pool was really cold ! But it is large so to be fair would cost a fortune to heat properly .

The sauna is fine but the steam room stinks of mould and damp which was attempted to be hidden by the masking of essential oils on certain days ?! They need to rip it out and start again .

Mixed reviews about reception staff , some were helpful and others not so much . Often unacceptably long queues .

Location is excellent to walk to town .
Overall a good stay .

However need management with more experience to rectify some of the issues with young seasonal inexperienced staff .

My friends arrived at 7pm to check in and their room was not available until after 11pm due to the previous people not vacating , the staff didn’t know how to handle the situation , also another friend had her wallet go missing from her room , so lock your bits in your suitcase !

The distressed chic look is good in the large common areas but the hotel is extremely dirty.

We used the spa; the pool water and surrounding area was so dirty we left immediately to shower in our room. We found bones and rusty screws in the pool. There was no jacuzzi.
In both saunas, the doors were hanging off their hinges and couldn’t get above medium temperature. The entire spa hasn’t been maintained since maybe the 90s.

Across the whole hotel; Half of the staff were extremely blunt and rude.

The rooms; we booked a superior double and the bed was very small, shower had no pressure and couldn’t get hot. The room was cluttered and uncomfortable. The toilet was like a portocaban toilet. The TV was good but couldn’t connect our apple phones to anything. We even brought our own Apple TV but there was no way to change source either.

The room soundproofing is terrible. We could hear the room next to us speaking at low voice and showering.
The hallway noise in the room is extreme. Expect no sleep between 12-3am.

Breakfast; there is a wide selection but the hot food is very “little chef”.

The bar; great space but they need maybe 4 times more staff.

The outside apres area is lovely (but still very dirty) with little party vibes. It was busy but no DJ on the Saturday and the speakers were not working when the DJ was there.
We were told we couldn’t book tables at apres (only some tables are heated or have fires) but we were kicked off our table so that the owners friends could have the fire.

Every single space in the hotel is either broken or dirty (door handles falling off, lights flickering, tables and chairs you cannot sit on or eat off).

Small things too; the storage cupboards in the hall ways; the doors are hanging off and can’t close.

Reception staff are helpful when pressed but they are more interested in controlling you than helping you.

The Fruterie restaurant is 4/5.

I have been to much better, comfortable and pleasing 2/3 star hotels.

This is easily the worst review I have written about a hotel.

I absolutely loved my stay at La Folie Douce Hotel in Chamonix. There were just a few things that could have been done to make this 5/5. Hence the 4/5 review.
First let me start by saying all the staff that work here are great, very friendly and very helpful with any queries you have. It wasn’t until the second day when we realised there is actually a concierge next to Le Mayen to help with our ski related questions. As we had never been to Chamonix before we didn’t really know where to start with our skiing but later found out the hotel offers a shuttle (make sure you book it the night before) to the Brevent lift as the lift directly outside of the hotel was shut due to the lack of snow in our 5 days that we stayed here. This meant the hotel wasn’t actually ski in and ski out but if the conditions were right it would have been. This didn’t matter so much as we managed to get the bus to other resorts and there is a bus stop about a 3-4 min walk from the hotel.
We stayed in room 415 a premium room. The rooms aren’t the biggest however they are modern and come with a lovely range of toiletries, a robe and slippers. I did request twin beds via email before we arrived and this was acknowledged and also acknowledged again on check in. However when we got to the room it was one queen bed and not twins. This was rectified quickly when we told reception about it.
Another thing to note was that the wifi wasn’t very good in our room and I had to stand by the door if I wanted a decent connection. Also there isn’t much space to dry your wet ski clothes and there was only one mirror in our room. Which made it difficult to get ready in the evening with 2 ladies needing to use one small mirror! It would be better if they had a longer mirror in the room as well as the small one in the bathroom.
I think we were lucky that we were on the 4th floor as I think the lower floors can hear the noise from the bar and club (club is open on Fridays and Saturdays) so I would recommend requesting a room higher up.
I would say this hotel isn’t the most suitable for families with young children due to the party nature, however there were plenty of families staying here and they do have a kids section.
Just make sure you like to party and enjoy loud music and après ski if you’re thinking about staying here!
The breakfast buffet was again excellent and I particular enjoyed the hash browns and pancakes! There is a wide range of food available for breakfast. We didn’t eat any evening meals here so I can’t comment on the rest of the restaurants. The après-ski bar was great and Le Janssen (the cocktail bar) was our favourite, you get excellent service in here as well and a good view of the evenings live performances by the talented singers, dancers and acrobat!
The pool, sauna and steam room are free to use as guests of the hotel, we only visited once but it was clean and you get wonderful views from the pool, even thought it was a bit cold!
It would be good if they had a hot tub as well.
I would definitely recommend this hotel for an entertaining stay in Chamonix!

If you go to the after skiing do not order a bottle of vodka. The only books available is absolute. We ordered one it came open and diluted with water. It is a shame when you pay 150 euro for a bottle of vodka and they give you one open and mostly water. A complete scam. Not even a real red bull . They give you some unknown generic.

Dear JKAAH, We thank you for your feedback. We sell several kinds of vodka at the Après-ski but the Absolut remains the most common vodka. Each of our bottles is brought closed to our customers and opened in front of them, these are the procedures put in place. Concerning the redbull, we have chosen to work with another energy drink seller: Madness. See you soon, All the team of La Folie Douce Hotels,

The positives, the location and views are outstanding. That’s it... Check in was a nightmare, having been directed to self service check in which was completely pointless to then have to do it all again when the keys were ready. Charges appeared on both systems which no one could explain then staff got patronising when we politely queried the charges. Once we finally checked in (after a very early start and 5 hour car journey) we were told we couldn’t go in the pool as we hadn’t booked! Fair enough you need to book spa treatments but not the swimming pool so no swim for us or our kids. To add to the frustration when we looked at the pool only 3 people were in it!!! Ridiculous! We were a family of 4 in an access room which was incredibly small but clean with a broken window and scuff marks here and there which made it look shabby. Bar staff got 3 of our drinks bills wrong with charges made for drinks we didn’t order or we’d already paid for... an
Impressive location but overall rather poor.

Know that when you came, the hotel was 100% full, therefore there was a lot of arrivals at the same time. For the pool you should have told us, if as you said there were only 3 people in the pool, you and your kids could have gone there. Concerning your room, you should have notified the reception. We have a technical service available 24/24 which takes care of repairing customer requests within 30 minutes. We are sincerely sorry for the inconvenience caused. I believe the renovations are complete. As for party situation, hard to answer. The entertainment put on was certainly appealing for all ages but Im assuming you mean the rowdy din at 1 am. If in an access room and not near the front of the hotel you may be able to avoid the noise.
