Since 1903, the history of 5-star hotel, Le Hameau Albert 1er and the affirmation of its mountain identity have been the foundations for its serene and stylish hotel rooms, where you can peacefully contemplate the Mont Blanc panorama. The chic hotel rooms in the main Albert 1er building and La Ferme, the Martine and Blaitiere suites and the Soli and Grepon chalets propose six intimate areas…peaceful havens in which to relax under the watchful eye of Mont Blanc. Taking inspiration from the past and combining it with the future could well be the Hameau Albert 1er’s motto. For more than one hundred years, the Carrier family has been overseeing the destiny of the formerly named ‘Railway Guesthouse’ (Pension du Chemin de Fer) and relies strongly on its history to build its future. Over the years, the now, 5-star Hameau Albert 1er hotel has been tastefully refurbished with an emphasis on aesthetics and premium comfort. Today, the Hameau Albert 1er, made up of chalets and a historical main building, resembles a small hamlet, nestled in a rustic garden, with a brook flowing between the fruit trees. All that is left to do is choose the ambience of your room: contemporary or alpine tradition, pure white tones or the intimacy of old timber. From the comfort of your bed, everything around you tells a different story...

My review is based primarily on our room location, a corner room on 2nd of 3 floors with great views of the mountains to the south including Mont Blanc, room 212. It had many windows including a functional balcony with a small table and lounge chairs. Sleeping with the windows open in the cool evenings is a huge plus in my opinion. Even the bathroom had a large window that opened. There is a wood burning fireplace, small desk area, small inside lounge area and 2 TVs. The staff were great. The only negative is the WiFi was barely functional and you couldn't do a Zoom meeting or reliable WiFi calling. They acknowledged the problem and are working on it. The location is great. Close to main town, easily walkable yet far enough away from hustle & bustle. I am not a "foodie" and was disappointed with the Albert 1er restaurant. My friend and I had the "Matured Aubrey Wagyu Beef Entrecôte" and it was tough and almost impossible to chew. The lamb selection looked much better. The green Chartreuse soufflé was the only thing I enjoyed. The service, as expected, was excellent.

The Hameau Albert 1er is a phenomenal hotel with amazing staff and service! The attention to detail is fantastic, and we really felt that everyone went out of their way to ensure our stay was memorable and perfect. This was my second time staying at the hotel but my wife’s first... now she loves it as much as I do! We will definitely be back!!

Pros

The hotel is perfectly located adjacent to Chamonix town centre. Super easy walk.

The room was very comfortable, with a wonderful fire place and lounge area.

On arrival, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and able to guide us on all the best options in Chamonix (including ski options)

We had a wonderful weekend, though I would say this is a solid four stars vs. five by standards set in other luxury hotels.

Breakfast, when ordered to the room was excellent (though expensive)

Excellent ski locker facilities.

Cons:

The amenities in the room were good, though a little lacking for a five star hotel - in particular, tea and coffee facilities were very basic. There was an 8 euro charge to hire a Nespresso machine, which seemed crazy, I would expect that already.

Breakfast: lovely but very expensive (25 eur per head) and not included within the room rate. Very nice breakfast room though.

Spa Area: very, very nice but not quite up to the level suggested in the hotel photos and the indoor pool was pretty cold, which was a shame. Small jacuzzi area too.

Overall:

An excellent stay and loved the feel of the hotel and the friendliness / customer service from the professional staff. However, the points mentioned above, given the eye watering room rate, detracted a little from the overall experience.

When you enter your room, the first thing you see inside on your door is a notice saying, “Your door is equipped with a double lock for your safety.” ( see photo below). There is also a knob for double locking below the door handle, like in most hotels. However we found that this knob does not work. You can’t lock your room securely from inside. Anyone with the key card for this room can open it at any time. That includes any member of the staff. We thought it was our room only that had this fault but were told by the extremely rude manager that all the rooms in this hotel cannot be locked. She said this was to allow firemen access to your room in case of fire! Really! What guests must do, she said, if they want privacy is to put the “do not disturb” sign on your door, and you will have security and privacy. Really! Is this 5-star quality?
So, if you value your privacy, or security, you should go elsewhere. Also, if you don’t think you can tolerate rude managers who like to show their temper at you, it would be better to skip this hotel.

Dear Madam, Dear Sir, I am realy sorry I did not manage to find a solution for you, despite offering a large Suite that is equiped with a different lock system than all our rooms in main buildings. You already stayed in our hotel 2 years ago and you mentionned the same problem. It was quite hard to let you understand our rooms are built this way and we will not change for you. For security reasons, we made the choice to be able to enter the rooms with our personal pass anytime. In case a guest is feeling bad we do need to be able to enter. I am profoundly sorry this do not suit you. It's a shame we got upset for a door problem as we do have plenty of nice services to offer. I am sure you will find other hotels responding to your needs. Kind regards Perrine Carrier

Staff was very friendly and helpful.
The room (room 208 with amazing view) very very nice. Spacious room, large bathroom, enough closet space. A bottle of water evey day. Coffee and tea available; Very clean.
Breakfast was very nice. Eggs, bacon, ... are available but you really need to ask yourself; They don't ask if you want something hot;
Fresh orange juice every morning.
Even if you want to have a very very very early breakfast, There is fruit and fresh bread available. Staff at breakfastis very very friendly and helpful ( tis on where to g , where to hike, ...).
The bar. Nice, friendly. Maybe a little bit too stiff. Good choice of available drinks;
Ajustments as result of COVID were very good. Gel everywhere, gloves, ...masks.

A friend, my son, and I stayed here for five nights and had a wonderful experience! The service is incredible, they couldn't have done more to be helpful. The rides to and from the ski resorts to dinners in town, etc, etc were just icing on the cake. The breakfast was perfect and had something for everyone. Our room was large with a huge bathroom, all very clean and nicely decorated. They give you water, sparkling or flat, in the room and when you're coming and going in and out of the hotel. The room to store your ski equipment is heated and convenient. It's so close to town, just an easy five minute walk. And everyone is SO helpful and kind. I can't say enough good things about this hotel. I would love to come back and stay here again and again.

This is a unique property, with rooms both in the original building, and "Chalets" around the grounds. The entire property is immaculately groomed and super clean. I'm an artist, so notice little details others might not, like the elevator is lined in real leather, these details are everywhere. Nothing left to chance. Sitting by the pool? See the reflection of Mt. Blanc in the windows. The staff will do anything for you and are extremely helpful. They have a pretty little bar and some nights there is live music. They also have an incredible Michelin Star gourmet restaurant (see my separate review) Don't even think about taking your kids there, or if you are a picky eater, go to the casual restaurant on the property, also excellent. Walking distance to town, we never drove once here. Hope to be back next year.

This is the third visit for us here, even got the same room. This is a very bespoke property with lots of little luxury details, like the elevator is lined in leather. Our room on the third floor of the main building had an incredible view of Mont Blanc from the front, and a nice view from the side window of the Brevant side. Wonderfully comfortable bed and linens. The bathroom is huge and has a bidet too. Desk area is handy. I like the mix of designer MCM furniture with an antique alpine cupboard. The ground are beautiful with a garden that sources some herbs for the restaurants. Both are excellent by the way. They have good on-site parking, some in secure garage. Helpful shuttle service during the day. The staff is lovely with some of them remembering us from last year. We just love the understated elegance of this resort. Hope to be back next year.

Nice hotel in a great location but I thought it was really overpriced for what it was. The room was very small with an uncomfortable (very hard) queen sized bed. The pool was outside and you have to walk a couple of minutes to it. Breakfast was a great disappointment. I ordered a glass g wine at the bar and it was 19 euros- I should have looked at a menu becte asking the bartender for a glass of red wine. Great location but once again not worth the money.

What I like about this hotel.

Great location and good value

Near stations and town
Garden and grounds are attractive as is the hotel interior
Good reception service and staff including baggage & parking.

What I don’t like

Dogs off the lead in hotel interior and garden

Difficulty in getting drinks in garden. From where and by whom?
A electronic bell system on the tables would be a simple solution.

Breakfast is a complete mystery, what is available ? Tables are not cleared.

As often the case rooibos tea is unknown although sold in every supermarket .

Not sure what makes this a five star hotel. Probably some good aspects of the reception.
