This was our first time in Val and we didn’t know what to expect. The centerpiece was our accommodation. From the moment we arrived, we were delighted to be at Hotel Kandahar. Right in the dead center of town, beautifully designed with a perfectly comfortable room for our family of four. Breakfast every morning was delicious – a generous spread of pastries and other alpine culinary delights. The front desk staff were unfailingly, helpful. Julien and Melanie, and really everyone, was friendly, helpful, and always available. When our son tore his ACL, the front desk found crutches to allow him to walk to the clinic. When we asked for bags and bags of ice, they were nothing but helpful. When I especially appreciate it was the thought that went into the room design. A separate area with a large king bed for adults with a bunk bed area at the other end of the room. The bathroom had two sinks, and was nicely supplied every day with l’Occitaine toiletries. We ate at the hotel restaurant two nights. Much like the front desk, staff, the waitstaff there was incredibly friendly. Enjoyed talking to one of the owners on New Year’s Eve! One last note. If you have a car, make it a small one. Parking in their garage was terrifying! We are so glad we picked this hotel for our stay and hope to be back someday soon!

We just spent a lovely week at the Kandahar Val D'Isere. As a family of four we shared one of their family rooms with my two children making use of the bunk beds in the alcove. The room was comfortable and spacious. I would suggest asking for a room to the rear, as the late night revelers falling out of the nightspots of Val D'Isere can be a little noisy but this is clearly not the fault of the hotel.
Location is excellent, on the main road in Val D'Isere and a five minute walk (at most) from the Solaise and Olympique ski lifts and ski-school meeting points. Ski hire shops in abundance if required.
Breakfast was a continental breakfast but was sufficient and everything was fresh and good quality. No complaints from any of us.
Heated ski lockers with easy access.
Our room was ready on arrival at 11am, which was an added bonus and the room was serviced every day.
Ate at the Terrasse D'Alsace (the hotel's restaurant) on a couple of occasions and this was also good. A good apres-ski vibe and hearty food choices.
A previous reviewer asked why this hotel is only a 3 star and I tend to agree. Certainly from our perspective the additional facilities that might make it a 4 star are not required on a ski holiday. This hotel focuses on the basics very well.
We would definitely return.

We were so impressed with this hotel and echo the comments of others who are surprised it is only 3 star.

The staff are excellent and can't do enough for you. The cleaners are superb and it didn't matter how late we left our room they would always be in and clean it beautifully. There are some small touches which really made a difference such as being able to phone down and for no extra charge they immediately bring you breakfast in bed, really appreciated as we were unwell a couple of days. They also supply a kettle for the room if you ask, robes, and allowed us to order in pizza and eat it in the bar area.

The restaurant attached to the hotel is also great but as we were there two weeks we didn't go half board as wanted some variety.

Unlike a lot of French ski hotels we have stayed in there is loads of storage space in the rooms and they are spacious and well laid out. We stayed two weeks over Christmas and New Year and could have stayed longer.

We didn't try out the sauna and steam room until the second week but wish we had as it was really nice.

The location is fabulous, right in the centre of the village but set back slightly so not too noisy. About a 5 - 10 minute walk to the Olympic lift and a two minute walk to the bus stop.

I honestly can't recommend this hotel highly enough, amazing staff, fab location, spacious rooms and value add items that made the stay really lovely.

Spent a skiing week with friends at the Kandahar April 2022, our first holiday post Covid / lock down. I know the resort and have stayed at the Kandahar a few times but not for over 20 years. It has seriously improved. The principal areas are lovely with great bar / lounge breakfast areas and the renovated rooms are fab, but the non-renovated ones are a still a little tired. If I was going again, I would try and get a first floor room.
The hotel shares ownership with the La Taverne D' Alsace. So, if you are staying in the hotel on a half board basis, for a great diner, all you need to do is go downstairs (you even get a special lift key), and you will come out inside the Taverne D' Alsace (it is connected to the Hotel), so no need to put your coat or heavy boots on. As always, the food in the D'Alsace is wonderful and the service is superb. It always has a lovely warm and relaxed atmosphere. The hotel is ideally placed on the Avenue Olympique with all shops, bars and restaurants walkable. For the slopes, it is a slight uphill walk of about 5 mins to the Solasise or Bellevarde lifts. At the end of the day if you are finishing on the Solaise or Bellevarde slopes, it is an easy 4 mins walk downhill. You could also hop on the free bus shuttle which drops you at any of the lift areas in Val D'Isere. If you want to go to Bellevarde / Solaise or Le Fornet areas, the bus stop is on the other side of the road from the hotel, 400 m away, just past Le Garage (the local bus station). If you want to go to La Daille (the lift area at the other end of the village) the bus stop is on the same side of the road as the hotel, just past the supermarket on the Avenue Olympique. the Kandahar has a good ski locker set up, on the ground floor as you come in and all lockers have boot heaters.
I think the hotel is currently a three star but once they finish the 2nd floor room renovations, I think it should be a 4 *. what other hotel is right in the main part of the village, walkable to lifts, shops, supermarkets, has one of the best pubs / restaurants in Val attached to it? It also has a small sauna and steam room (4th Floor). The heating system is good, and it seems to have constant (very) hot water. Get the right room and it this is a cracker of a hotel.

We stayed here for a week in February half term. Our room was tidy and clean with a warm chalet feel - plenty of storage and balcony looking onto mountains.
The boot room was great, with heated boot racks.
Breakfast was nice, no warm food but their was a good selection of continental and pastry options.
The location of the hotel is great, right in the centre of the village and a 5 minute walk to the main gondola area in Val d’Isere.
Overall a great hotel for a really reasonable price and we would definitely recommend this hotel

I’ll begin with the positives.

1. Lorna: if Carlsberg’s did reps, Lorna would be an ice cold pint on a hot day. (You can almost imagine how the first sip tastes). Enough with the beer metaphor's, she is very well connected & efficient with any desires you may have. Meeting Archie made our trip.
2. The cleaner: honestly, we gave this cleaner a few challenges. She was put through her paces to say the least but my god, she done well. Very proud. I think Kim Woodburn maybe doing a season in Val.
3. Location, location, location - love it or list it. Kirsty & Phill would list this.
4. The boot room: if you thought Lorna was special, wait until you visit the boot room.

The negatives:
1. The lift smells like poo 24/7.
2. Breakfast: at breakfast they provide activities. Spoiler alert: it’s a scavenger hunt to find cutlery with no clues. BYOC (bring your own cutlery) this hotel runs this policy but ironically you need a straw to eat their scrambled eggs. We did ask for the recipe, apparently it’s 1 egg to 1 cup of sick.
3. Restaurant: if you’re looking for a delicious meal after a hard day skiing, do not use this restaurant in the hotel.

To conclude, I would definitely return, albeit, a bedroom on the ground floor to avoid the lift would be desired.

Had a great time at hotel Kandahar. Eight of us spent the week skiing at Val d’Isere and the meals were fantastic and the rooms were very nice. About a 200 yard walk to the two nearest gondolas out of Val d’Isere. Ski rentals were just two blocks down the street which was very convenient

We booked a skiing trip through Crystal Ski, stayed at the Hotel Kandahar, perfect location in centre of the resort with easy access to slopes! Hotel room was very spacious, clean & modern! All the staff were very friendly & helpful, we booked b&b, breakfast was plentiful & lots of continental choice as well as scrambled & boiled eggs! Would definitely recommend this hotel, fabulous 3* hotel although I would rate it higher! Thank you we will definitely be back to stay!

The Kandahar is one of our favorite hotels in Val D'Isere. This cozy mountain hotel is nestled right downtown and just steps away from the skiing. The service is very hospitable and the included breakfast was exellent. The Kandahar is hard to beat value.

Noisy noisy noisy. Night and Day. Paper thin walls. Outdated room which needs serious refurbishment is not value for money. Lobby and lounge area nice . Clean. Good location to slopes and center of town. But given the noise and the young clientele I would not stay here again.

We are sorry that your stay with us was disturbed to this point. This week is indeed the busiest week of the entire season since it is a school holiday for pretty much everyone, explaining the important presence of young children. I can assure you that our walls are normally thick enough to keep "normal" noises from being bothersome. We would be very happy if you were to choose to stay with us again, outside this extremely busy week. We guarantee that you would be able to have a very pleasant and relaxing time. As for the room, it has been refurbished in 2018. We can only be sorry that it does not suit your taste.
