Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We visited Oberammergau for the second time.
The classic Hotel Alte Post was our accomodation this time (we picked it due to reviews, location and on booking.com it was one of the 2 available hotels for our travel period).

We were happy with all the facilities and room comfort.

If your looking for traditional Bavarian hospitality, this is the only place to go.

I just happened upon a table for dinner and was welcomed gladly despite the place being rammed to the hilt with tourists & locals.

Christian introduced himself as the Chef (boss in old school German) and I got a seat at his bar as all the tables were occupied.

I ordered the classic Weinerschniztel mit Eier Spätzle and prieselbern. #delicious.

Only criticism with the Wolf's menu was dessert is limited to 2 options. But I was given a complimentary bier and schnapps as a friend who'd only just met.

I'm used to enjoying hotels & restaurants and over recent weeks there's been quite a few.

The Wolf stands out as being typical of what you'd expect to find in Oberammergau.

I didn't see the rooms but apparently dogs are treated like VIPs here and they are mostly fully booked with 7 night stays.

You won't find rooms on bookings.com either, you'll have to book direct. They're so busy they don't need the third party agents selling distressed inventory.

The hotel room was small but adequate for my single stay. The restaurant had plenty of food selection during breakfast and was very cleaned. The reception counter personnel was always professional, courteous and friendly. The hotel is conveniently located in the middle of the town where all shops are in a closed proximity. I would recommended.

Before going to the Passionplay this year, I looked up photos in my ancestor's scrapbooks at home in the USA from the 1900 Passion play and brought them along to compare in 2022. They had stayed at the Wittlesbacher Hotel and eaten at the Alte Post, so I was excited that we were booked to eat there the night before the play too.
I was very impressed that even though we had been delayed on the road for two hours beyond our reservation time, the staff of the Alte Post STILL had our reservation card on the table as if nothing were unusual!
The food in 2022 was delicious; we both had the Sauerbraten, red cabbage and Knüdln--which were EXCELLENT served with a local dark beer and a wild berry Charlotte for dessert. I also sampled the "yellow" after dinner liqueur from the Ettal monastery.. that was good too! I just hope my ancestors ate as well 122 years before!

Visiting Germany with grandchildren showing them places we came to 38 years ago with their mum. Oberammergau was a fond memory from the past. Hotel Alte Post was chosen because of its location and because it had a restaurant on site which made it easier for us.

Located in the very heart of romantic Oberammergau you will find the hotel in the historical and much photographed building. Comfortable and spacious rooms. Clean and well maintained. The bathrooms could use an update. For taking a shower it is needed standing in a tub. But that does not erode the experience of the typical southern German experience much. The staff is friendly and service good. The hotel has a nice restaurant where good quality, traditional dishes are served. Also a nice place to land at the end of the afternoon and enjoy a great beer. The hotel has a parking and is easy to reach.

Well equipment and comfortable bedroom with a mezzanine. If it wasn't for the experiences with the waiters, I would give the hotel 5 stars.

I would recommend you avoid Alte Post if you have any dietary requirements.

On the first evening I was given a basic salad as a main course which was a larger version of the starter. After returning it uneaten, the waitress returned later with an acceptable alternative claiming the chef didn't know. Lunch the next day was no problem. at Dinner that evening, on discovering three people at the table with dietary needs, the waiter banged the table in anger insisting I have a salad yet again. I asked the tour rep for help and there was another argument. Later the waiter came back and apologised to the tour rep but never once did he apologies to any of us at the table.

There were other minor incidents of rudeness from the waiting staff as well.
