This quaint hotel is right outside the city walls of medieval historic town of Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber. the hotel feels like a B&B. Our room was on the 3rd floor what they call a 2 room. We had a beautiful view from our room. They have a mini bar of sorts on the second floor and its all done on the honor system, something I had never seen before. Breakfast is provided for guest and offers a decent variety of options. This is where I discovered cold cuts and cheese is a very normal breakfast food, which I encountered on the rest of my trip.

We drove from Prague to Rothenburg and didnt know if we would make it on time, it was winter, so I figured there would be rooms. We knocked on the door of this hotel after reading the reviews here and Martin answered. He welcomed us in like old friends and made us sooo welcome

We had a choice of rooms, and the room we chose was quiet, comfortable and clean. The included breakfast was good too.

This is a wonderful spot, 50 meters outside the city walls of this charming town. Consider yourself lucky if you get to stay here!

Its not a hotel, so dont expect that. It is a comfortable B&B style place. Martin and his wife are not too bothersome, nor are they too scarce. They are gracious and give you the space you need to enjoy your vacation

This was a very memorable part of our trip. Im glad we chose this rather than a cold and impersonal chain hotel.

Please visit Rothenburg, you will love it, we chose to spend an extra night here.

We stayed here for one night on our recent European driving holiday. We would have gladly stayed longer had time permitted.
Outstanding location just outside the city wall. Beautiful building with lovely stained glass window. (Rm 16) Extremely large bedroom, with alcove for additional sofa bed.
Would not call this a hotel in the American/Australian sense of the word. It is in fact a family-run B&B - like a number of 'Hotels' on the continent. We were warmly greated, and the room was spotless. We were made to feel at home very quickly. They offer an 'honesty' bar at very reasonable prices, and a community lounge area - as well as your own room facilities.
Breakfast was delightful - very plentiful. The host even cooked soft-boiled eggs and decorated them with face pictures - much to our daughter's delight.

I can not say enough good things about our recent stay at The Hotel Hornburg. We were greeted at the door by our hosts and it was as if we were a guest in their home-which I guess we were!

The location of the hotel is perfect-just outside the wall. You can be in the center of town in minutes.

The rooms are just as they look in the pictures. We loved room #16 and will stay ther again someday.

If you need help with anything-carrying your luggage upstairs, restaurant recommendations, etc., Martin will help you. He and his wife as perfect hosts.

Room costs are very reasonable-you may be able to stay some where for less but you will miss a memorable hotel experince!

I highly recommend the The Hotel Hornburg.

Many people would enjoy staying at this hotel, so I hate to give it an average rating. I'm giving it three stars because the owners eventually resolved one of the issues, otherwise I'm afraid my rating would be even lower. On this trip, my family wanted beautiful, clean rooms, a great breakfast, convenient parking, and friendly people to help us if we needed it. We received all those things with this choice of hotel, and if it would have ended there we would have given it a five star rating. However, the owner went into our room when the "do not disturb" sign was on the door, therefore ruining the feeling of privacy that we value so highly. When we asked why this occurred, the owner stated she had a right to do so because it is a "private family home" and she needed to check things. She didn't clean or anything; she just looked around. This was the first morning of our stay, so it was not as if we had been in the room three or four days making a huge mess. We put the sign on the door because we truly did not need anything or want anyone there.

I personally enjoy vacations where my family and I can go about our own business; however, I recognize that not everyone feels that way. For us, the incident and the resulting conversations made us uncomfortable and conspicuous, and even though we tried to resume our holiday, we ended up wanting to leave a day early. At this point, the second owner refused to let us out of the contract and was going to make us pay for the last day unless he could rent the room to someone else at the last minute. More conversations followed, and perhaps because it was Christmas time, they ended up allowing us to leave without having to pay for the final day. That healed some of the hurt feelings, and for that we can give three stars to the rating. Just be aware, this is a small place--a bed-and-breakfast rather than a hotel--so if something goes "wrong" you will definitely feel set apart from other guests and the atmosphere will be awkward. But if everything goes "right" you will probably love staying here, hence all the excellent ratings.

In the future, our suggestion would be for the owners to establish a policy in writing where they inform their guests that the rooms "MUST" be entered between such-and-such hours every day, to open windows, turn off lights, check for towels, etc. And perhaps they should mention to guests that any requests are best made before 16:00 when their extra help leaves the premises (Their disregard for the sign stems partially from the fact that they don't want surprise requests during inconvenient hours, so they need to "check" what you're doing to anticipate needs). Bottom line: If you enjoy getting to know people and feeling like you're part of a big family, this beautiful house is the place for you. However, if you want to be there for the sole purpose of having private family time with your own family and not socializing, and if you see yourself as paying for rooms you can call your own for the time of your stay, you might feel uncomfortable in a "family house."

I used Booking.com to book this hotel one day before we arrived. The only option on the site was a non-refundable 2 day booking, and we weren't sure about staying for 2 days, but I figured that I could talk to the owner about the second day upon arrival to determine how to handle the second day. There is also an arrival cut-off, which I was concerned that we might miss. I called ahead to let them know that we were running a bit late, and might not make their 7:00 PM arrival deadline. In the end, I arrived at 6:55 (before the cut-off) and then had to wait for 15 minutes for the couple ahead of me to get checked in and chat with the receptionist. I informed the receptionist that we might need to check out a day early and we would like them to open up our room for the next day. She said that she couldn't help me and I needed to talk to the owner the next day.

The room smelled like a sewer and the sheets were awful. The bed was terrible, as well. Even if we hadn't already decided to leave early, one night in the room would have convinced us that we didn't want to stay any longer.

The next morning, the owner confronted me as I came down for breakfast, and started yelling at me about being a liar. I was completely confused and surprised. I tried to tell her that I asked to talk to her the night before, but apparently due to the limited English skills of the evening receptionist, she thought I had said that she agreed to let us check out. She was yelling about how tourists come late and expect her to let them in the room (??? yes, you own a hotel ???) even though we were on time and had to wait for her receptionist. She was also yelling about how Saturday was her family day and she wasn't going to do any work to rent out the room that we had vacated. I asked her to simply tell any walk-ins that she had an open room and allow them to book. She charged me for 2 nights, despite the fact that we were only there for 1.

After her shouting tantrum, she told us to sit down, then brought us each a boiled egg for breakfast. I have traveled extensively in Germany. It was the worst breakfast I have eaten. The entire experience was a disaster.

In the end, she was able to resell the room that night and refunded one night's charges. It was her unchecked fury that was absolutely inappropriate. This woman should NOT work in a customer facing industry like hospitality.

As with many things, you judge a person, not by how they behave when everything goes well, but how they behave when everything falls apart.

I booked a room in this hotel after reading all the positive reviews on Tripadvisor and noticing that the hotel is recommended in the Michelin Guide. While making the booking, I found the hotel staff friendly and helpful, but on arrival something wasn't quite right. We felt as if we had walked into and episode of Scooby Doo. The interior is creaky, shabby and cluttered, and our room was dark and cramped. The bathroom was in a cupboard and there was not enough light to read by. Worst of all, the beds were extremely uncomfortable, and where we would have liked smooth cotton sheets we had scratchy peach coloured nylon. There was also a hair on one of our beds. We spent by far the worst night of the whole of our 11-night stay in Germany, and checked out a day early. On a positive note, the communal mini-bar is good value, and the breakfast was OK, but if you are looking for somewhere classy, you are likely to be disappointed. We headed off a day early to Munich, where for only 50 euros more per night than we paid at the Hornburg we had a suite in a luxury, centrally located hotel, with real cotton sheets, a real bathroom, a separate WC, and enough light to read by.

My husband and I had been planning our 22 day trip to Germany and the Czeck Republic for almost a year. We booked all of our hotels thru email and Hotel Hornburg looked absolutely delightful and had wonderful reviews…we were really looking forward to spending time there. We exchanged several emails with the hotel and then made the booking, confirming it with my credit card.

Ten days into our trip, we were informed that my Husband’s mother was dying – “get home now” We had been scheduled to travel to Cesky Krumlov in the Czeck Republic, and well as Passau, Schwangau, Augsburg, Dinklebuhl, Rothenburg ob der Tauber & Frankfurt. It took us 2 days to make the connections for our return home (Vancouver, British Columbia) but Mom died before we got there. Within hours of returning home, we sent out emails to all of the hotels we had booked, as well and a transportation service in Cesky Kromluv, 3 tour services and a car rental agency informing everyone of our cancellation and the reason why.

Five days after the cancellation emails had been sent (and the same day as the funeral) we received a phone call from Hotel Hornburg, yelling at us. Yes, Yelling….they claimed not to have received our cancellation. I realize that in cyberspace emails can be lost, but did they really think that after booking months in advance and confirming the booking, that we would just return home on a whim?

I explained the situation, but it made no difference…the hotel was going to bill us. I understand business…I run a home based business, and it would never enter my mind to try and make a profit from someone’s grief. Not one of the other hotels or businesses that we had to cancel even suggested billing us…..some even sent condolences.

We had been planning and saving for our trip for over a year. Having to cut it short was disappointing, and under these circumstances, it is devastating. We have had to pay for return air tickets and an extra hotel in Frankfurt, just so we could get home, and then we have had to deal with funeral arrangements here. It saddens me that a “Family Run” hotel does not have the compassion to understand the death of a family member.

In this case, the simple fact is – Hotel Hornburg did not lose money by our cancellation….they just were not going to be able to make any, unless they charged my credit card for services we did not get to use.

Hotel Hornburg continues to remain as a tradition with our family. Every year we go there to get into the Christmas season. This year was no different, and Martin and Gabrielle never cease to impress. It is a wonderful location, with lovely rooms, and the breakfast is excellent. Highly recommended.

My son and his wife are on their honeymoon and stayed at the Hotel Garni Hornburg on September 22nd 2005. They got lost driving due to a road works detour. They had trouble phoning the hotel as the number would not go through. They phoned us in Canada to ask us to phone the Hotel and let them know they would be late. The lady who answered the phone was extremely rude and informed me it was 11 pm their time and she would only wait another 15 minutes for them to arrive. My son and his wife were driving in a strange country and the lady should have understood their dilemma. They did arrive at the Hotel but experienced extreme attitude problems from Mrs.Gabriele Wetzel, I feel the hotel should have been more service oriented, it appeared she did not care for the problems of the guests staying at her establishment.

Answer from Irene H
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany
Dear Diane, ... in some of the rooms we allow dogs - some rooms are pet free. Just let us know, the exact date that you would like to stay in Rothenburg and we can let you know, if there is a room available in which dogs are allowed! Best regards Gabriele P.S.: we have a friendly, male Golden Retiever ourselves - so guest dogs should be friendly with other dogs, too!
