This was not very pleasure experience. The core of all the problems is that A&O is partialy a hotel and partialy a hostel. And it takes the worse of both worlds. When we take Hamburg's A&O as a hotel the stay would be absolutely terible. We reserved a room called "family room" with 4 beds – a double bed and a bunk bed. The hotel had had information that we were four in fact and could have supposed we would use all the beds. However when we first entered the room we found out only two beds were made of. There was not even bed linen so we could made of remaining beds ourselves. In the end we had to return to the reception wait the long line and finaly we got the bed linen and an information that in A&O it was a common practice to made of two beds only no matter number of guests.
Then we wished to take a breakfast in the morning. Our program in Hamburg was tight so we had to leave the hotel early. So we were pleased to found out a sign declaring the breakfast is served from 6 AM in the work days. However the receptionist recommended us to buy the breakfast only in the morning when we asked him after check-in. This was very good counsel in the end because when we came to the breakfast area at 6.40 we found only a closed door. So in the end A&O announced a breakfast and offered none.
This was the hotel part of A&O Hamburg. If we supposed this was a hostel all of this would be acceptable give or take. On the other hand we did not find out such basic hostel facility as a public kitchen in the huge building. There was only some offer of dinner delivery.
Well, this does not seem very supposing, but still with all this knowledge I would not have problem to stay in A&O Hamburg once again. It would only be necessary to ask for reamining bed linens (and towels, too) during the check-in and not expecting a breakfast.
When we pass these problems there was just one complication – next to the hotel was some facility which produced very loud music until very late night (maybe early morning) and it did not help our children sleeping. What we liked about Hamburg's A&O was the furniture design with industrial motives like protective grilles on the lights.

Room were ok someone do really disinfect everyday and theres spaces to put your things in the boxes, however since you pay for bedsheets and you choose your bed, theres often mix up. Had also issues with the fact that even girls dorms, there were new guests whom were boys and the staff said couldn’t do anything till next day. Guest kitchen even though locked is always in a horrible state and no one cleans it.

We came to Hamburg with friends and tried this hostel as it was recommended.
The location was ideal right next to the train line and a 20 minute walk into the centre. Only downfall was no close supermarkets or places to eat.
The hostel downstairs is very modern and has a very big communal area, so big its more like a hotel.
We were on the 4th floor which was good views, however the lift didnt work for most of the weekend which was annoying.
The first room we was given had no working lights, so after a run down the stairs we were given another room no problem.
We booked 2 private rooms which were great sizes and both very clean. We could have all stayed in 1 room as we had 2 twin beds and bunk beds.
The layout of the floors is quite confusing and on one trip down to get a drink we ended up on the other half of the hotel which was being renovated. It wad full of workmen who didnt speak English and we had to dodge wet paint.
It wasnt the best hostel ive ever stayed but for a very short 1/2 night break this is more than adequate for the money.

We, two senior citizen widows who travel the world and stay in budget hotels, couldn't find a hotel in Hamburg that was less than several hundred dollars a night so we booked this very large hostel, private room with bath. The room itself was fine. Bed comfortable. Room clean. Very basic. The hallways and stairways dirty and waiting for the 4 person elevator to the 8th floor (where our room was) was taxing. We always walked down the stairs. The front desk staff lacked knowledge of the area and neighborhood. The first morning when we tried to get breakfast it was impossible because there were literally hundreds of guests lined up to go into the dining hall. We learned to try to time our breakfasts to times when these large groups would begin touring. Buffet breakfast was fine and plentiful. The location of the hostel is a bit out of the way to city center. The train station U-bahn and S-bahn is a 10 minute walk away and up several flights of stairs. Tough with luggage. You can get to it by walking at least twice the distance to avoid the steps. Bottom line: this hostel isn't for older folks.

We arrived at around 11pm and the staff on the reception desk were very helpful. The rooms were clean and a good size.
The location is good, a bit of a walk into the centre of Hamburg but only a 5min walk to train station (Berliner Tor) which was great for getting around the city.
There is a 24hr bar which also serves food and pool tables that were both very well priced. This was great to end the night with.

It was easy to check in after we booked without having to pay in advance. The workers are young and friendly. Would go there again when I’m back in the city. You had privacy once in your room, and the room had every tbh ing you need in order to feel comfortable

According to the advertisement, the kitchen is available to the customers.

When you ask the receptionists about the key for the kitchen, they say to you that the kitchen is occupied by other guests and they do not have any other key. Knocking on the kitchen's door, nobody answers to it.

You ask again in the reception for the key after a while, and the answer is the same. At some point, the answer you get is that it is too late for the kitchen, so you will not get the key either.

They tell you that you should order a pizza instead...

I was double charged by A & O Hostel Hamburg for our Stay from June 2-7, 2022.
I booked for 1 room 5 person. Confirmed by Booking.com thru Agoda (Agoda Booking ID : 670879217, Reservation was made under Booking.com booking ID 3585737917).
Upon check-in, they force me to pay for 2 rooms although the booking clearly states that is only for 1 room 5 person. We only use one room because that was the agreement on the booking but A & O Hostel didn't take any action to reverse the charging on the "double room" charged to me.
Horrible day and no one from A & O will help you resolve any issue.
I've got a very bad experience on this hostel and will not recommend this to anyone. Be careful!

When paying the reservation through booking, the total includes taxes and charges.
When I arrived at the hostel they make you pay in cash "taxes not included in booking" which "are only from Hamburg", when in the other hostels in the city it is not like this.
When consulting for these concepts and requesting proof of payment, I was given an invoice whose detail did not match with what I was paid.
The people in charge of the customer service refused to give their names and surnames, I was denied an explanation about what was charged, there was disrespect from the Front Manager on duty and Celeste, the person at reception in that moment (Sunday 11/13/22 at 14:38 pm).
I understand that if it is correct, it should appear detailed in booking that are not included or train the staff so that they can give an informed and respectful response and a valid proof of payment.

Fire alarm went off at 5 a.m . when i was checking out i was told not there fault for fire alarm so nothing they could do for me. There was no fire thank God, but clearly it was faulty and it went off for a reason other than a fire.
Also in this day and age, who charges extra for clean sheets and a pillow case. The normal this is these come as standard and including in the price. Unfortunately when you do this some people will not pay the extra and just sleep in the bed to save the money. This is not good for the rest of us who use Sheets as standard.
It would be better maybe to give a discount if you were the 1 in a million who brings your own sheets..!
