Decided to go out for Sunday Lunch whilst visiting friends. Good job we booked as was very busy and wouldn’t have got a table. All 4 of us ordered the roast good selection of drinks and all very friendly, good atmosphere in an old style pub. Food arrived together with good selection of vegetables all nicely cooked and hot. Decided to have a pudding again good selection I had steamed treacle sponge was very enjoyable. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole meal.

Family of 11 plus baby were staying nearby for a few days over New Year and booked a lunch for January 1st. No problem accommodating all of us. Really great choice of food, no question of choosing the menu beforehand, all orders taken on the day. Ok, we had to wait a bit but we were in no hurry. Food was really excellent, arrived hot and more or less all together, despite the variety of choices. Excellent service, nothing too much trouble, the one waitress was really obliging and helpful, checked that we had everything etc. Cost was very reasonable too, worked out at about £25 per head, including drinks & desserts. Then we found out there was just one person doing all the cooking in the kitchen, the landlord’s wife! How she did it all we just don’t know! Amazing for a small village pub/hotel, and producing such an excellent choice of food. Highly recommend The Mitre.

We would like to wish you all a really happy New Year. Thank you so much for your superb review. We usually have more staff than on that particular day, but it was as you say, New Years Day! Thanks again, Andy, Barbara and your waitress, Clem.

Just returned from a few nights at the mitre inn , myself, Keith and Ollie the dog were made to feel most welcome by Barbara and Andy . The Mitre inn is a lovely character inn with so much history, but tastefully modernised without loosing any of the character.
The room was comfortable and spotlessly clean . Both breakfast and all the food in the restaurant were very well cooked and delicious and so much so we ate there every night .
The village of Witheridge is so lucky having it on their doorstep, it is also centrally located so ideal if you like to see the best of what Devon has to offer . Thank you Andy and Barbara for such a lovely stay.

For my last night in Devon I wanted to thank my friend for putting me up by taking him out for a meal. As Witheridge is the nearest village to him, we decided upon the Mitre Inn.
My friend tried to phone ahead to book throughout the afternoon but the phone did not even ring so we were unable to do so. We thought that if we arrived early enough we would be able to sit outside. As we arrived in the village I saw that a table was available so got out the car to wait there whilst my friend parked.
As I sat waiting for my friend the landlord came out, took one look at me and gave me this exceedingly warm greeting:
'What are you doing waiting out here all on your own?'
Rather taken aback by this irascible man I answered that I was waiting for my friend to park.
'Have you booked?' The effortless charm kept pouring forth.
'No, is that okay?'
'Out here it is'. And he walked off.
I felt stunned. Having worked in retail all of my life I'm acutely aware of the dos and don'ts of how to treat customers and this was a shining example of the most deplorable.
Finally, an extremely friendly and helpful young waitress came out to take our drinks order, and we asked to see the menu.
She returned with our drinks and the menu, and then told us that there was a forty five minute wait for food. We decided to discuss whether we would wait that long, and the waitress left us to make our decision.
The decision was made easier when the young lady returned a few minutes later and asked us to pay for the drinks we had just ordered. This is a practice that is done at the end of the meal, and one that I am informed is the usual practice here, too. As I paid the landlord lingered in the doorway of the pub, making sure that the girl was undertaking his dirty work for him, clearly too gutless to do it himself.
If we had ordered, I dread to think what this character would have instructed his chef to do to our food. The beer was delicious, but the atmosphere was the sourest I have had the misfortune to experience. I hope that the girl that works there finds a nicer employer soon.

We have investigated this so called 'complaint' and can find no evidence that it actually occurred. As for the policy of people eating and drinking outside and having to pay on ordering, this is a very common and practical practice which is carried out in thousands of establishments worldwide for fairly obvious reasons. Why anyone should take exception to it is beyond me. You also called me 'gutless' really; I am not the one hiding behind an anonymous review laced with pathetic venom avoiding any personal interaction. The Landlord

Wow what a stunning place! We went for the first time last night . The food was incredible, especially the hake , it was cooked to perfection . The chef has a great talent , the sous chef was a lovely friendly guy , and the guy behind the bar was lovely, friendly very chatty and made us very welcome . The Mitre itself was beautifully and tastefully decorated and super clean , the restaurant was spotless with lots of curios to look at whilst you wait .
We will definitely be back soon it is now our go to restaurant as a couple or with our friends .

I have stayed at the Mitre several times since 2019. I can't rate it highly enough. Andy and Barbara are very friendly hosts and make everyone welcome including your dogs if you want to take them away with you.

The rooms are nicely decorated and the breakfasts are particulalry good. Their food is all home made and it's great to see a some imaginative vegetarian dishes on the menu as well as good curries if you are lucky enough to visit on a Thursday. I've really enjoyed my stays at the Mitre and hope to visit again as soon as I can.

Had breakfast this morning at The Mitre. Wonderful food and very good atmosphere. The staff were all friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The food was delicious , well presented and very well cooked.
You were made to feel extremely welcome and it was nice to feel as if you were also appreciated. A real family feel to the place. Loved it and could not fault anything.
Well worth a visit for a treat!

We stayed at The Mitre Inn whilst walking the Two Moors Way.
The inn has a traditional character, with a welcoming landlord and public bar.
Our room was was comfortable and warm, plenty of hot water and provided a good nights sleep.
We ate at the inn,and enjoyed a good meal , made with locally sourced ingredients. Breakfast the next day was first class and to top it all, we were provided with a packed lunch for our onward walk, which was crowned with a lovely selection of freshly prepared fruit salad.
A very enjoyable stay. Thoroughly recommended.

This Hotel is perfectly placed if you are doing the Two Moor Way Walk. Needing to secure over night accommodation I spoke to Seb over the phone. He was so helpful, inviting and professional I knew this was a good place to stay before we arrived.

On arrival found Andy, Mary, Seb and the two young ladies who were waitressing, to be so friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble.

The room was spacious, light and importantly CLEAN.

The food was excellent and all at very reasonable prices.

Would definitely recommend this establishment for a stay or to eat at.

Thank you Richard from us all. As you say, The Two Moors Way passes directly past our front door here at The Mitre Inn. What better way to end a long days walk, than with a pint or two of Exmoor or Exeter ale plus a freshly prepared, locally sourced evening meal. Relax, eat, drink, sleep and arise the next morning refreshed. Following a choice of cooked breakfast from our menu, freshly ground Italian coffee, you're recharged for the next leg of your journey.

Booked for Mothers Day lunch. Lovely pub friendly attentive staff very welcoming. The roast was excellent. Beef was tender and we had a good selection of vegetables although we would have liked a few more potatoes and gravy.

We had pavlova for dessert which was delicious. My son in law and daughter had the cheesecake which they said was excellent and equally delicious.

Although it was busy we didn’t feel rushed at all.
