Visited Trier in May, 2013, and found the Astoria on a quiet street within a few blocks of the center. An easy walk to everything. We were greeted with champagne as we signed in, and each morning with the better than average breakfast. Our host gave us good advice for the next leg of our trip. Very pleasant.

Hotel Astoria is located within walking distance of Trier railway station. We crossed the square in front of the station and walked straight out among the trees until we saw the famous Porta Nigra. It’s possible to continue walking straight ahead until you reach Bruchhausenstrasse on the left, but we took Simeonsplatz and Kutzbachstrasse because the hotel is located at the beginning of the Bruchhausenstrasse, close to Pferdemarkt. An excellent location because all the sites in Trier may easily be reached on foot. The area seemed quite safe at night.

The three star Astoria is an old hotel with only 15 rooms. There is no elevator and the stairs are a bit steep, but nothing, really, compared to what is to be found in many Dutch hotels. The fire escape provisions we could see from our room, seemed to be very sound. There is no night porter, so you have to take your key with you when you leave.

Upon arrival, we were handed several keys and left to choose a room. We opted for one at the back on the second floor (N. 25) to avoid traffic noise. It was very quiet and had a rather pleasant view. The colour scheme was a bit peculiar: girly pink and white striped wallpaper on one side, pink flowers on the other. But then, pink seems to be everywhere in Trier. Our room wasn’t big, but it didn’t feel crampy and was rather cosy. There was a 55 inches bed with a small desk attached to it, a chair and a wardrobe big enough for our large bags. The television was surprisingly small. As is often the case in hotels, the glaring bedside lighting was not suited for reading in bed. The pillows were very soft, but we found a harder one in the wardrobe. The bathroom was ok, but the curtain tended to cling.

The breakfast room and the reception area have clearly been decorated by someone afflicted with a serious case of horror vacui. There is colourful stuff hanging or standing on every available spot. There even is a fountain with gilded angels. Old fashioned and kitschy, but in a nostalgic kind of way. Quite a change from sterile chain hotels.

Breakfast was completely self-service. There was enough choice and the quality was ok for the price paid. There even was a bottle of Sekt (sparkling wine) to spice things up a bit. We regretted the fact that meat and cheese were placed under the same plastic lid - a common practice in German hotels - because it made the cheese smell and taste of salami. On each breakfast table there was an egg topper with the name ‘Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher’ inscribed on it. We didn’t manage to make the thing work properly, but we had lots of fun trying to remember its name. We also enjoyed watching the birds - mainly sparrows and blackbirds - visiting the feeding table in the patio.

All-in all, we were satisfied with our stay at Astoria. At around 80 euro for a double with breakfast in the low season, it was one of the cheapest options in Trier and the price-quality balance was fair.

We originally booked in for 2 nights but due to work issues at home we had to leave after one night. Where do i start!!

Ok, the location is excellent. We were given a warm welcome from one of the owners, with a welcome drink. Getting the car parked is a bit of an ordeal, as you have to get a chip card from reception, go park the car 3 streets away then come back. I was ordered not to lose the card as it would cost me €280 if i did. When i got back after parking the car we were given the choice of 3 rooms. We were handed 3 big bulky keys with massive brass keyrings on, which we had to lug around with us everywhere, as you were not allowed to leave the key at reception. We chose a room at the front. The room is small, bed really uncomfortably with the thinnest pillows i have ever seen. Towels in the bathroom were threadbare and a variety of colours. No A/C in the room, so it was very uncomfortable. No lift either, lots of stairs. As mentioned we had to check out early, and in fairness to the owners they offered to refund the nights stay if they were able to sell the room, as it turns out they didn't sell the room, but it was nice of them to offer, as i know they didn't have to do that. But they wanted me to leave my bank account number with them so that they could refund me. I said no way, and they took offense to this. They said it's not possible to refund a debit card, which we all know, of course it is. I explained that in Ireland you just dont hand out your bank account number to anyone. I suggested Paypal, but they said " We don't really use the internet". Breakfast was ok, but only the cereals and fruit were in the buffet. The ham and cheese were served to you at the table, so you only got what the owner gave you. You dont have the option of filling your plate again!

This place feels more like a boarding house in the 1950's than a hotel., with the ancient decor and rules You feel like you must follow the rules. They really need to get with the times and renovate this place completely, and loosed up on the rules a bit!!!

Let's start with the positives. I didn't even know Trier existed until I had to plan a trip between Frankfurt and Luxembourg. Trier is a lovely stopover for 1 or 2 nights. Its people are friendly, its town centre is vibrant, and there are some amazing historical sights to see, the kind most would never think you'd be seeing in Germany.

But this isn't a review of Trier - it's a review of a horrible hotel which is fortunate enough to be located in a lovely town.

Its location in relation to the town center is great. That's the end of the positives.

I had the misfortune of having to book a hotel in Trier with very little notice. At the time, there were only a handful of options. Should I spend £50/night for a 4*+ rated hotel outside the center, or should I spend £75/night for a hotel like Astoria that isn't even in the top 50%, but is in the center AND has a 'champagne breakfast'. Your answer will vary depending on what's available, but PLEASE do not ruin your stay by booking this depressing hotel.

It starts with the welcome drink, which many other reviewers have commented on. The "lobby" in which you must consume your drink is not a lobby so much as it is a 2 meter hallway between the entrance and the rest of the hotel. It's not a nice start to the experience at all to have to spend 3 - 10 minutes drinking this drink while the cantankerous owner hovers over you, doing whatever it was she was doing at the time.

The room is completely outdated and needs refurbishment. The bathroom is full of mould, the kind you can smell but can't see (probably painted over).

The bed has a dinky single pillow that is completely inadequate.

The "champagne breakfast" was a joke. Plastic flowers, stale bread, old meats and cheeses......

Then check-out ...... tried to pay with Mastercard. The cantankerous owner said that they don't accept Mastercard. I was taken aback and paused .. and said, "But I used this Mastercard to guarantee our reservation." --- 'yes,' she said, 'but that's different from paying.' What kind of response is that?! So if I (as I should have done) simply left right then and there, she'd be able to charge my Mastercard, so why can't she now in a civilized manner? I instead had to use my debit card and incurred fees I wouldn't have had she been a reputable owner and accepted the Mastercard which THEIR OWN WEBSITE (Google 'Astoria Trier' and click "Rooms") says they do accept

Total total disappointment and I've learned my lesson to try and stick to the top 25th percentile when it comes to choosing a hotel in the future. This hotel has a lot to learn before it will ever come close to touching that kind of ranking.

Slightly off the beaten path but quiet and within easy walking distance of old town, the Astoria was a pleasure to stay at for our two days in May. The owner and staff were welcoming and offered advice on how to best enjoy Trier. The room was small but cozy and clean. Breakfast selection was good, (but typically German), although it was obvious special requests could be accomodated. Highly recommended.

We stayed at the Astoria Hotel in Trier on a recent trip to Germany. It was our first night after a very long day of traveling. They treated us like royalty! A welcoming cocktail at our arrival, the softest pillows, a fabulous breakfast in the morning. Our accommodations were perfect and relaxing, our hosts were welcoming in several languages. I'd defiantly stay there again!!

The hotel owners were helpful and friendly. Breakfast was wonderful, and the place is clean and well maintained. The rating is not higher due to the narrow, long stairs up to the rooms. We also found the shower to be small and difficult to use. The hotel prohibits liquids in your room, so we could not have a glass of wine after sight seeing in the privacy of our room.

The location of the hotel is excellent for visiting the sights of Trier. Parking is available for an additional fee. We would stay here again, but we would want a room on a lower floor..

The Astoria is all about location - only a short walk from the Porta Nigra and the buses that link up with the Airport bus from Hahn. The welcome is warm and the rooms are plain and - in our case, once the central heating and hot water was quickly repaired - what you'd expect for the price. And that's what you get with the Astoria. Value with a capital V. You can walk to everywhere in Trier - and we did. So the good breakfast set us up well for the day, although as a greedy eater I prefer to help myself from a buffet rather than being served from a platter. Our room was at the front but still perfectly quiet - admittedly in the depth of winter. If you're on a budget, the Astoria is a great choice.

The best hotel we stayed in during our trip to Europe. Location very good, very friendly and helpful owners. We were offered a welcome drink on arrival and not to forget the champagne breakfast buffet next morning, the best breakfast we had during our trip. It was also real fun watching the birds being fed in their small garden at breakfast time. A small hotel with large hospitality, we had a wonderful experience staying at this hotel and will recommend it to all our friends and family.

I gave this place five stars-no it isn’t a « five star hotel ». It is a good place to get a nice night of sleep and breakfast. The owner bends over backwards to be helpful. I arrived early and he invited to use the bathroom, stash my belongings and while I parked in their nearby garage, he made sure my room was readied. The hotel is three minutes from the main area of tourist interest in town and though I had barely heard of Trier, it is not to be missed by tourists. The room was small and clean with a simple bathtub. Had the place not been dirt cheap, I would not have rated it as highly. So what does this place do to earn my rating? Clean, cheap, well located and exceptionally warm and friendly. I suppose if I had paid more, I might have gotten a larger room, but how much room does one person need?

No hair dryer. The bathroom was too small to put one in there. Clean place, good breakfast, convenient location small room but if the price is right it is good.
