Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The staff where very nice and helpful at the front desk and the hotel was clean. It is also in an excellent location. My negative comment is about breakfast. I asked what the breakfast was like since it is during COVID and was told it would be a full buffet. It was dry scrambled eggs, so kind a sausage and beans. The bread and croissants where are dry and stale. I only took breakfast as I wanted to get up early and eat before cycling for the day and this was terrible.

Back to the future (or past) in real life; this hotel hasn’t been renovated since it was built it seems. The atmosphere reminded me of a seminary; cherry wood panelling, wooden floors, cellar like rooms.
We booked a room with a view which was amazing. The rate plan however turned out to be a scam; surf and breakfast should be translated into room and breakfast. Surf is offered for free to all guests..

Dear Moramare, Thank you very much for your visit. I am very sorry that our hotel did not appeal to you very much. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and ask for your understanding for a hotel that - although still in good shape - lacks some top modern details and shows signs of wear due to its age. However, please be assured that appropriate renovation measures are already being planned. It would be our pleasure to welcome you again in Trier and at our hotel. With best regards, Christopher Lubk, General Manager

Excellent hotel with very clean and comfortable rooms, our room was at the front of the hotel so had a view of the Porta Nigra Gate to the town.
The hotel is located just a 2 minute walk from the town centre. There is car parking available on site for 14€ per day and is available above or underground which was good for parking the motorbike.
Breakfast was absolutely fabulous and well worth having.
Staff are extremely helpful and friendly and speak English if required.

We booked a room with a view on the Porta Nigra. These rooms are more expensive but we thought it would be worth it. When we checked in and went to the room, we realised that we got a room with a 'view' but on the carpark at the back of the hotel. As we cannot imagine that the booking systems used by Mercure do not indicate the type of room their guests are booking, we assume that the very unfriendly receptionist was not paying attention or worse ... tried to cheat. Our very positive impression we got at the Mercure in Koblenz the night before, changed completely to a very negative one of Mercure and Accor in general.

Response from GMTrier, General Manager at Mercure Hotel Trier Porta Nigra

I sincerely apologize for the deficiencies and human errors that unfortunately caused inconveniences for you. It sure looks like there were some major flaws within the reservations department including the check-in procedures. Sorry to also learn that the behaviour of the staff at reception was less than satisfactory. I appreciate your honest critique which will be the basis for discussions within our local team - and a careful evaluation of the root of these problems. Rest assured that we will take necessary measures so that an experience like yours will continue to be the rare exception. On a personal note and on behalf of my team, I would like to ask you to come back once more for an opportunity to prove to you that we can do a much better job. We would be honored to welcome you again. Best regards, Anja Ahnen General Manager

Arrived at Trier by train from Luxembourg for our one night stay in the town.

The hotel is about a 1000 yard walk from the station, straight out the station straight down the main road and the hotel is on the right: simple.

The booking in was straight forward and the staff helpful enough and the Privilege room that we booked was both clean and tidy and had an excellent view over the Porta Nigra.

(There's a supermarket just through the gates and on the left.)

For some unknown reason Accor hotels only supply one bathrobe even though two persons are booked for the room, not that we ever use them just curious.

The town has ample sights to see and its worth a walk to both former Roman bridges that cross the Mosel river here, although the original bridges were both destroyed in the war.

Karl Marks house is not that far away nor is his statue and the Roman baths (now under repair) is worth the walk.

The helpful staff at reception will supply you with a map.

We did not dine at the hotel as we prefer to eat locally nor do we pass comment on the sleep quality as you either have good night sleep or you don't, can't blame the hotel: simple really.

The town and the hotel was worth a one day stop overt.

Good hotel, in a good location, with good staff and booked at a good price: what more do you want.

Bon journey

To echo a common refrain among previous reviews, you cannot beat the location. And if air conditioning is an important consideration for you, it is one of the few such hotels in that immediate vicinity with AC that can be considered moderately priced. The hotel is clean and well-maintained and the staff was helpful. Underground parking with direct access to the hotel is a major plus. The only notable downside we encountered; furnishings and lighting do not appear to been updated recently. That said, would we return to Trier, we would initially look upon this as our first option.

We appreciated the location of the hotel which is opposite Porta Nigra.
The underground parking makes the stay very convenient for us.
We like that the room was spacious & it has a sitting area partially separated from the beds. Bathroom was clean too.
The rooms are very well sound-proofed so we had a nice quiet rest at night despite the loud music from a party in the bar.
The breakfast has an extensive variety & of good quality. We enjoyed our breakfast with the view of Porta Nigra.

Located just in front of the porta nigra, it is difficult to find a better location for your hotel in Trier. We arrived around noon, and were promptly made clear by the masked lady behind the plastic wall that our arrival before 15H00 was not appreciated. Then, and only then as contractually agreed, the room would be made available.
Not a big deal for us, as we visited the city in the afternoon. Someone else had taken her place in the evening and the lady gave us the keys and the hotel instructions in a friendly way. The room was rather basic - with view on porta nigra - but we got a good night of sleep.
Breakfast is the traditional Mercure breakfast ; not really something to remember.
Convenient is the underground parking directly under the hotel for 15 € per night.

Solid hotel with everything you need. The location next to Porta Nigra is ideal, also with being just outside the city center but not too far. The rooms themselves are old but spacious.

We had two problems with our stay, one on the major side, one less so.

(1) The wall is coming apart. As in, I leaned against it and heard things falling... inside the wall. Upon closer inspection, I saw the wall was jutting out slightly from beneath the wallpaper (see photo). I am not qualified to comment on structural integrity of a room, so I don't know if it's negligible or a few years away from collapse, but it didn't make me feel great sleeping next to a potentially disintegrating wall.

(2) The room is stuffy and the air conditioning was very weak. We set it down to 20 but did not notice a difference. It was not a good night's sleep.

All in all, I guess it was fine since the wall did not collapse, but I probably wouldn't stay here again.

The hotel is directly in front of the porta nigra. Easy to reach also the city center with all the shops and caffees.Rooms are good. Breadfast too. Parking space is unfortunately very expensive. The bar opens unfortunately only in the evening 5pm.
