We stayed in this hotel for several nights in June 2014 and have very mixed feelings about it, especially after reading so many good reviews. I couldn’t say it was bad stay, but there were some serious “turn off” points. It’s very unlikely that we’ll stay in this hotel again.
I’ll start with good things: excellent location - quick walk to everywhere, next to the Porta Nigra gate.
Interesting architectural details make hotel looks very appealing from outside. Breakfast – ok, nothing special, but enough to keep you going till lunch.
Our room was overlooking Porta Nigra and quite big, even had something that meant to be sitting area with sofa. However we were not able to use this area or sofa simply because it was blocked by single unmade bed (mattress on wheels). We did not feel acrobatic enough to jump over this unmade bed, push it out and sit on the sofa. Furniture in the room was really worn-out; it looked like several unmatched pieces gathered together. Bed was horribly tough; one might as well sleep on the floor. I’m well aware that hotel beds in Europe are not the same as in America, but this particular one was really hard-hitting.
The bathroom was pleasant and clean, definitely renovated, but there was a problem with toiletries supply. When we first came bathroom was supplied with 1 piece of sop, the size of a silver dollar and 2 really miniature shampoo bottles. Next day and next day nothing has been replenished. When I asked someone from hotel stuff about it I got an answer that they are out of soap. We stopped by local store and bought some soap, spent 89 cents, and were able to take normal shower. It’s obvious that 89 cents did not make any difference to our budget, but such negligent from hotel stuff did make a huge difference.
Another “turn off” - "private" parking lot was completely full all the time; we ended up having to park at a place farther away. Merely inconvenience, but still something that will make you think about mismanagement.

We stayed there for two nights. The hotel is clean and right next to the roman gate.
However, there was no one ever at the front desk whenever we need help (because of the weekend) , the guy who is looking after the restaurant is really helpful, he came and helped us with few things. However, we couldn't find any hotel staff besides the guy in the restaurant when we need help. The hotel was dark when we return at night at 10. It was very strange not like a hotel.
There s no English channel and the internet connect is really weak (almost none) in the room.
Such a shame, the hotel has so much to offer. It could be one cool small hotel that everyone would love to come and spend time in Trier.

I stayed here three nights at the beginning of December and was rather disappointed as the hotel did not meet my expectations. The location is excellent, and the building lovely, but has apparently changed owners and is no longer a restaurant. A continental breakfast is available but only scrambled egg, omelette or crepes are served all day and evening in the ground floor bar.
I booked two rooms, both very pleasant and clean, but lacking in details, such as complimentary water not replenished daily, no extra bedding in the room, no hot drink facility. The limited staff worked hard to please but it took forty minutes to check out because the computer system could not cope with two rooms on one booking and wanted to double the amount due. It could not print a bill and I am still waiting for the one promised by Email. I advise not to put any bar bill to your room, pay cash or card at the time.
The hotel has great potential but the management need to get a grip.
I would still recommend this hotel if the price is right and you accept it is a bed and breakfast in a very good location.

Been staying at this hotel for the best part of thirty years under the old ownership. Never had a problem and would always recommend the place. The new owners have been in place now for a couple of years and I experienced the unforgivable in a hotel. After a 500 mile drive from the Midlands I got to the hotel earlier than I had stated only to be told they were full. The excuse they tried to give was a joke: that a Frenchman with the same name as me had arrived during the afternoon and they had thought it was me. I have never met a Frenchman with a Scottish clan name so I asked them to verify that he had the same name: staff admitted that the person they had let the room to had a name nothing like mine and just shrugged their shoulders when I asked why they had done it.
I was very lucky to get the last room at another hotel but £30 a night more expensive.
I will definitely NOT be staying at this hotel again. I can put up with an uncomfy bed, bad breakfast, noisy neighbourhood but not with no bed.

Terrible service at their restaurant!!! Ordered tea, coffee and food, only got tea. They forgot coffee and food although it showed on their computer screen, so after 45 mins and newer customers getting their orders completed, I went to check out. Our waiter seemed confused as to why we had not received our coffee or food. Tried to charge me for whole order but I complained and got charged for tea only.
Do not expect good or friendly service and avoid if possible.

We stayed at Zum Christophel for two nights in May 2014. The location is excellent, a quick five blocks from the train station, next to the Roman Porta Nigra gate, at the north end of the main shopping street, and a quick walk to the cathedral and museums. The breakfast in the restaurant downstairs was quite good, and allowed us to watch folks walking into the town center. The hotel compared very well to other small German hotels we stayed in. Room had pair of twin beds pushed together and sofa. Only snag: the staff at checkout didn't know how much our room rate was, and we had to show her our confirmation e-mail.

One challenge for me: I stayed in the same hotel in 2003, and I remember it as more comfortable ten years ago - slightly more comfortable rooms and exceptional breakfast. I'm still glad I booked here rather than getting a room at a cheaper but farther out restaurant.

My husband and I spent one evening here following a Christmas party, and it was a lovely stay. The rooms themselves are fairly spartan, but comfortable, and we had a room that overlooked the Porta Nigra, which was terrific. Breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of choices, and the location can't be beat. Terrific for a quick getaway.

I booked this place 3 weeks before arrival, asking for a room overlooking the Porta Nigra and specifying (and therefore paying) a parking place. I never got any answer concerning the room, and was given a "stupid room" (no light next to the massive armchair and none either on the desk that doesn't allow any comfortable reading, when taking a bath, my head was hitting the awkwardly fit heater...). Worse, we were told there were no parking spaces available and had to park in town, even though our booking did specify we requested and would be charged for one. Pretty inconvenient if you don't speak german or do not know the area well.

Had pork filets on top of a pile of spatzle with jäger sauce. So damn good! Came in a clay/ceramic pot. A must have.

The hotel room was nice with a view of the Porte Nigra and within walking distance to several tourist areas.

Stopped one night at this hotel. It's beautifully situated for all of the sights and the staff were very welcoming. The parking was a couple of hundred metres away but was easy enough to find. The wi-fi hardly worked on the second floor but that was the only problem we had. Breakfast was excellent. I'd definitely stop here again.
