I recently spent a night here with my 8yr old son on our way from US to Romania.

We only stayed one night, so I really can't say much. I found the room clean and a proper size. We heard no noise from the street and the curtains blacked out the light. Service was also good. We had no complaints.More

Regarding your question about the metro, it depends on the season and the time. Usually it's busier the morning and the evening (when people go to work and come back).
In summer as it's the high season it's pretty busy, as well as all the big cities.
To go to the old quarter, you can take the green line (L3) from Sants Estación, and you can stop at Liceu. It's about 15 minutes by metro.
September is a good month to come to Barcelona. Regarding the availability, it's complicated to tell you but it should be still busy, there is not a better time.
