I booked a special rate "Unforgettable Moments" for a 3 nights stay via the hotel website, which included daily breakfast for two and a complimentary upgrade (subject to availability). Additionally, as a member of the "I Prefer" loyalty programme I am qualified for enhanced room upgrades. However, at the check-in I was not offered any room upgrade, nor did I receive any information about the (non-)availability of rooms of a higher category. I was not recognised as a member of the "I Prefer" programme, either. Additionally, the lady at check-in told us, that allegedly my booking did not include the breakfast. After showing the conformation of my reservation, which states the opposite, the lady promised to correct this in the system immediately. Obviously, this was not done, as according to the first version of the invoice I still should pay approx. 127 Euro for the breakfast; this was only fixed during check-out, where I received a corrected invoice without charges for the breakfast. Further items, which are minor, but which should not happen in a 5 star hotel: On the first day, when we returned to our room at approximately 2:30 p.m. after a 4.5 hour walk, the "please clean the room" sign was still on the door and the room had not been cleaned. The maid was about to enter the room only, when we were leaving for another walk at approximately 3 p.m. On our second day, the "floor" towel in the bathroom was missing, and no turn down service was provided. The capsules for the coffee were not restocked daily. Finally, the room is poorly soundproofed, which caused a further negative highlight: We woke up at approximately 2:30 a.m. on our last night because of the noise from guests having sex in the adjacent room. We called the reception at 2:50 a.m. and asked for help to sort this out. However, the noises from the neighbour room continued for further 5 - 10 minutes and stopped only, when we ourselves knocked on the wall. Yes, the rate was called "Unforgettable Moments"; and the moments in the Hotel Villa Real were unforgettable indeed - unfortunately, in a negative way... On the positive side: Location - walking distance to all the main attractions and museums in Madrid. Breakfast buffet was excellent and the breakfast team did a great job!…

We very much enjoyed our post-Christmas and New Year's stay in Madrid thanks to Hotel Villa Real! Madrid at this time is very festive with the holiday season. We were able to enjoy everything from this hotel's central location in Madrid. We were minutes away from Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, the Prado, and more. Atocha train station was walkable or a quick taxi. The hotel was immaculately clean, with friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable staff. The room was stocked with everything a traveler might need, and we received a bottle of wine and chocolates upon arrival. They even provided the 12 grapes on New Year's with an explanation of the tradition. We stayed on floor 3 with a view out to the plaza and a small balcony. The street noise was limited at night, and during the day, we could hear skateboarders outside, as well as the delightful holiday bells ringing on the insurance building nearby. None of this bothered us at all, but just wanted to give fellow travelers a heads up. Our room was wonderfully outfitted with plenty of towels, robes, slippers, tissues, and more. All the basics plus some. Two spacious closets afforded us lots of room. Room was refreshed upon request, and there was a nightly turn-down. Temperature was good and controllable. We were impressed with even the smallest touches, such as the reusable shopping bag provided (there is a tax for plastic shopping bags) and fragrance satchels in both closets, which helped us refresh our clothing after long travels. We didn't purchase included breakfast, and ate at the hotel one morning during our five night stay. Cafes are plentiful in this part of town, including one just steps away. We found the hotel breakfast to be efficient, but very expensive for a cold buffet (hot breakfast was available a la carte). We were definitely paying for convenience that morning, as we did not wish to leave the hotel. Pool available at sister hotel just around the corner. Of course, it was too cold for this during our stay, but we still enjoyed the view from the rooftop terrace. We would definitely recommend your stay there!…

The location is superb- it is close to the Spanish parliament, so there is a fair amount of police activity; but this just increases the sense of security. It is an easy walk to the main attractions (either galleries or the historic sights). And there are numerous restaurants and bars close by. Our room was a superior with city views, and was extremely comfortable. The quality of room, bathroom and linen etc was extremely high. Staff were very helpful and friendly. We enjoyed the modern bar, with its excellent selection of drinks and even snacks and meals. Altogether, we spent 3 very enjoyable nights here and would recommend the hotel to anyone looking for a high quality hotel that isn't interested in ripping you off. Beautiful hotel! Only got to stay for one night on a long layover, but had an easy professional check in experience and nice comfortable bed! The location of the hotel was amazing. 5 minute walk in any direction will get you to lots of restaurants and Tapas! Also had desert at the restaurant right there and it was amazing!

We stayed at this hotel during our first touristic visit to Madrid. We have chosen it for its perfect combination of location and price and it proved to be a great choice. Let me start with the location: if it's your first visit to Madrid and you want to see the major touristic attraction like Prado or Reina Sofia or botanical gardens or Mercado San Miguel, this is definitely the right hotel to choose. It's in walking distance to all those places. Then the staff: one of the best reception staff I have ever met work at this hotel. They are very friendly, with a smile in their face, trying to genuinely help and give support. The housekeeping team is no different by the way. I really loved this human aspect of the hotel. As for the room, we stayed in a junior suit. It was spacious, well equipped, sleep quality was pretty good. I stayed here for five nights in a superior room overlooking the internal courtyard. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and helped us secure a reservation on one night for a local restaurant which I can thoroughly recommend, not only a few minutes walk from the hotel but also great food. The room was well equipped with a comfy sofa and coffee table which was separated by a couple of steps down to another area. The bathroom contained all the amenities you need including hairdryer, bathrobes, bath salts, lovely large towels and usual soaps, shampoo and shower gel. There was also a free mini bar which was refreshed daily with water, orange juice, coke and beer. Ample storage space was accessible with two separate wardrobes and a safe. Air conditioning was also excellent as was the free WiFi. The only downsides was the signal on the tv which kept freezing although this was not an issue for us as we only needed it for a quick news update, and so did not report this to the hotel. There was some noise from neighbours too but a very small issue in reality. We had a turndown service on the first evening only - again not an issue for us. We were two friends staying so had twin beds which didn’t have a space between them as the side tables were fixed, so if booking and this is an issue you may need to consider a different room. We were delighted to find out that the hotel had recently opened a Roof top terrace with bar and small pool. There are only 6 loungers and seats next to the bar and it isn’t large but a fabulous space. We went there one evening for a drink before it closed at 8pm and it was beautiful in the sun. However we went up a couple of evenings later to be informed it was now closed as of 30 Sept. A shame as the weather was still hot and the only feedback I can give is that we were disappointed as we were informed of the new terrace when we checked in but not told it would close during our stay. There are four small lifts too, which meant we never had to queue but there are steps leading up to them from the reception area if you have mobility issues. Breakfast is served in a large room from 7-10.30 M-F and 7.30-11.00 on weekends. There is a choice of hot food to order as well as a very well stocked buffet of cereals, pastries, hams, cheeses, fresh fruit and muffins and yogurt. Soy, skimmed and full milk were available. Overall a lovely stay in a great location in Madrid- most areas are accessed by walking.…

This is by far the worst 5* hotel experience that we have experienced. Started at check-in with reception staff that were not motivated or engaging and even yawning on my approach to the counter, totally lacking in customer service skills. Continued with a room safe that was not working, I needed to contact the desk three times over the space of six hours before someone was sent. Experience did not improve from that point, every time we left the room we could not get back in as swipe card did not work. First it was due to us having card too close to phone, then faulty swipe, this happened on five occasions. To top things off hot water just stopped half way through a shower, the doorman was sent to assist, he sorted it out but we had to keep the water running for the best part of 10 minutes before it got warm. This was the only 5* hotel were no evening turndown service was conducted, similarly the first time we were not asked about our stay on check-out. On a positive room was spacious and location good, ancient mosaic and vase collection was impressive. Better choice of accomodation and service available in Madrid, specially for the price.…
