Hostal Persal is a great place for economical travelers like my wife and me, who seek a clean, comfortable room to sleep and shower, but spend most of our time out and about, so do not need top line furniture and amenities. The location is excellent, a few block walk south of the Sol Metro Station (40 min on subway... More

We have just stayed 3 nights at this very good basic hotel right in the centre of Madrid. Our 3rd visit. It's star point is of course its location - walkable to most tourist sights, metro, trains and buses. It's about a kilometre to the airport bus stop at Cibeles, a 10/15 minute walk if you are up for it... More

This simple and quirky hotel is in a great spot in the centre of Madrid. Every attraction that the first time visitor might want to see, is within easy walking distance from the hotel's location in Plaza de Angel. It is surrounded by tapas bars, restaurants, shops and you can spend hours walking along all the alleyways and enjoy outdoor... More

Pros: great location! Easily walkable to most sites (Prado, Royal Palace, Retiro Park, metro). Good size room. Cons: noisy (the doors/walls must be paper thin). Rude front desk staff. Shower leaked. Toilet wasn't property set and wobbled. Outdated decor. We stayed in 6 hotels on our trip to Spain, this was the worst. Not terrible, mind you, but i probably... More

Just back after 3 nights at this really nice hotel. Great location with very friendly staff. Room cleaned every day and towels replaced daily. Special thanks to Miguel who organised a change of room to 413 which was very quiet and a good size.

For our several times postponed trip to Madrid, finally, my wife decided for the date and my responsibility was to arrange our stay in Madrid. After more than one hour of evaluating pros and cons of almost all available options I decided for two key criteria: location and price. I ended up with Hostal Persal and being back from Madrid... Super location, basic rooms, good breakfast, friendly staff. Would recommend the hotel to young travellers, couples and those wanting to be close to most attractions in the city. Ask for a room facing the inner courtyard as those on the street side might be a bit noisy

Dysfunctional AC, paper-thin walls, sloppy housekeeping, confusing breakfast prices (follow Hostal on Twitter for free breakfast promotional code) and jaded decor. The Hostal is not what it used to be and, after numerous visits, we sadly shall not be returning.

This is a great choice for those visiting Madrid for the first time. The hotel is so well located that you don't required a lot of time planning where to go. Just go outside and walk. The place is not fancy, but is clean and comfortable.

Staying in Huertas

Neighbourhood Profile
Huertas
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighbourhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighbourhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.
