Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Unhelpful and rude front desk staff. They also had advised us to use a parking lot for our rental car prior to our arrival. We confirmed it only to find it was full when we arrived. Then we were directed to an obscure parking lot which was more far away and expensive. Front desk staff also stated that I could not speak with the manager. Definitely need some schooling in hospitality management.

Accolades and appreciation for our favorite Madrid hotel! After a 2 ½ year pause due to COVID 19, we were warmly welcomed to an updated, spacious and comfortable 3 bed family room (with coffee, tea and a frig) overlooking Puerta del Sol, the heart of Madrid. Jose Antonio at the front desk and support staff were ever helpful whether we needed recommendations, cabs or laundry done. Hotel Europa is a home away from home for anyone visiting Madrid!

We picked the Hotel Europa based on the recommendation in the Rick Steve’s Spain book. It was also a good choice due to the following: 1. Minutes from Sol Station with access to both the Metro and Renfre trains. 2. Lots of near by food choices. La Mallorquina was our daily breakfast and coffee since we did not choose the hotel buffet option. El Cortes Ingles for groceries and prepared food including fideua and paella. Santa Catarina Market and San Gines for churros. 3. Walking was easy to Plaza Mayor, Royal Palace, and other attractions. 4. friendly and helpful staff 5. Small library in the lobby with multiple copies of the Rock Steve’s books and other travel guides. The negatives from our stay: 1. Sol Plaza is lively until the early mornings on the weekends. 2. Construction was on going and stairs were not accessible but at least not during the critical morning or evening hours when we rested in our room. 3. While the room was a good size it was the oldest looking one of all the places we stayed at. Decor was dated, worn and could use a refresh soon. 4. Bathroom shower door seemed to be decorative as lots of water got out and soaked the floor outside. Also the sloped design at the end seemed to be a slipping hazard. 5. Rough toilet paper

Spectacular location to explore Madrid. The staff service was excellent and the restaurant was very convenient. They went out of their way to satisfy all the needs that we brought to their attention during our stay. The view of the Plaza del Sol from the balcony was really magical.

Christmas in Madrid, and I stayed in this comfortable hotel overlooking the Puerto del Sol. All the staff - desk, restaurant, housekeeping - were friendly and helpful. My room was small but comfortable with a small balcony and a view of the Plaza. The bathroom was tidy and modern, especially the shower. The only problem - I wish the room had a comfortable chair. There was only a desk chair. The entire area is pedestrian, closed to cars. But one side street leads to the front door of the hotel. Some taxi drivers don’t know this. There’s a cafe on the ground floor with outdoor seating and a pretty good buffet breakfast.

Pleasantly Surprised! Was nervous about all the average/bad reviews but this hotel was really good. We got a deluxe hotel room and it was a fairly large space. Shower was good and the room also had a fridge and tea kettle. Two small bottles of water were provided for free only on first day, which is fine. hotel is very close to everything, Sol metro is right outside. it isn't a direct line to the airport though so we just took a taxi because it was easier. One thing that would be helpful would be to have tissues in the room. The other thing to note, it is nosey only b/c we visited around the holidays and the music from the light show would go on every 1/2 hour. the clock in the Plaza also dings. if you are a light sleeper i do recommend a room towards the back. Our first room we had a corner room directly at the plaza and it was loud. Our second room it was more towards the middle and while it was loud, it wasn't that loud. For our second night we were surprised how hot the room was. The thermostat did not work when we tried to adjust. my husband had to open the doors b/c it was just so hot. Overall i had a really good stay. the staff was very nice and if i was to visit spain again i would stay here again.

Travelled to Madrid and chose Hotel Europa based upon a quick internet search of Madrid hotels. Seemed to be a great central location and a classic sort of operation. Extremely disappointed and it generally soured us on Madrid...the weather didn't help either. First, and not a real deal killer, but you can't get a taxi to the hotel as it's in a pedestrian area. Wish we had known but have stayed at similar type hotels. The hotel itself is really tired and in need of a lot of TLC, or more. Bathroom was nice in appearance but had a faint sewer-like smell from the shower drain. Didn't complain or notify the staff because it wasn't an overwhelming problem but more significantly, the front desk staff was pretty rude right from check-in. After a long trek to Madrid from Barcelona and dragging luggage across a square full of people while it started to rain, it would have been nice to be greeted by something other than ":yes we have your reservation and this is how much you still owe, how do you plan to pay?, and here's a key that a staff member will use to open your room." They didn't, and never, seemed happy that we had chosen the hotel, or attempted to be helpful. Even at checkout, it was sort of "you have no balance due, you're all set" No help in getting a taxi other than pointing us in a general direction of where we might find one after a 20 minute walk...well, the train station was 30 minutes, so we just walked there. Finally, and not the hotel's fault but the rooms on the outside of the building face the pedestrian square which stays noisy until 1-2AM, and there was some type of construction or loud equipment outside as well. Was happy to leave Hotel Europa-Madrid, won't return or use any other of the Hotel Europa establishments.

Dear M3936BDbernardl; Thank you for taking the time to send us your comments. I would like to briefly comment that given our location, we are the only hotel in Puerta del Sol, it is true that at certain hours vehicular traffic is not allowed. When our guests come to the hotel we cannot know where the driver who brings them to the hotel will drop them off, but when they leave we make every effort to have a car come to the door to pick them up or we accompany them as close as possible to catch a shuttle. As for our staff, as you can see from the vast majority of reviews on this platform as well as others, they are very dedicated and go out of their way to make our guests feel at home. We hope to be able to serve you again in our establishment and thus change your opinion.

The staff are very nice and the location is perfect (near Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, etc.). My room looked out over Puerta del Sol on the day of festivities for Princess Leonore. But…the premium room I had was cold (turning the thermostat up made no difference). The sheets had some stains as well, which is not acceptable. All in all, I would choose another hotel in this general location.

Dear 310jamesp, Firstly, we would like to thank you for having taken a moment of your valuable time sharing your kind opinion of your recent stay in Hotel Europa. Our staff is the principal value; a service characterized by profesionalism and continuous effort to satisfy all our customers. Also our privileged location (we are the only hotel in Puerta del Sol), makes us a safe choice. The other strong point (of which we are very proud) is our cleanliness, so we cannot agree with the second part of your comment. We look forward to welcoming you back soon, it will be our pleasure having you as our guest once again.

Perfect location in the city center across from Puerta del Sol. There is also a metro station directly in front of the hotel. Rooms were OK but could use some updating. Most tourist attractions are within walking distance. Many restaurants near the hotel. Very crowded and busy area.
