The hotel is centrally located - just at the base of the Gran Via. Easy to walk to all the main shops as well as the Prado and El Retiro. The staff was friendly and attentive and seemed to genuinely want to assist and accomodate. The rooms are modern and up to date. A few complaints (but nothing that makes me wish I had stayed elsewhere): the rooms are quite dark - difficult to see when applying makeup; the mattresses are not that great - time to replace?; and the groovy chair provided in each room is not at all comfortable - really just for decoration, I would have preferred a chair I could sit in as I got tired of using the bed whenever I returned to the room to relax.
We stayed at The Principal for two nights whilst taking a city break in Madrid back in March 2022. Only a 15-20 min drive from Madrid airport, first impressions of The Principal were amazing - the hotel is full of character, and is sleek and clean. We were shown to our room straight away despite checking in slightly earlier than the normal hotel check-in time - this was greatly appreciated due to the fact that we were tired from our early morning flight so thank you! We had notified the hotel of the fact that we were visiting Madrid for my partner's birthday, and the hotel staff were amazing. I had pre-ordered a cake through the hotel, which was displayed in our room alongside complimentary champagne once we entered. During my email correspondence I also requested a high room, which again the hotel arranged for us with views over the start of Gran Via and the 'Rolex' building (Edificio Grassy) opposite. I've read some people complaining about noise when staying at this hotel, but this was not an issue for us AT ALL despite staying in a room overlooking the main road - you are always going to hear the odd siren etc when staying in the middle of a city. Our room, a deluxe room, was a great size considering you are staying right in the centre of Madrid. Plenty of space for two suitcases, with a sofa area too. There is also an opportunity to connect your device(s) up to the room speaker so that you can enjoy your own music whilst chilling. Booking through the hotel directly, we opted for a booking with breakfast. This was well worth it, and held in the lobby area and La Pergola which was a lovely spot to start the day. Great variety of pastries, cereals, but also the opportunity to order from al a carte menu which was lovely. Coffee was very nice! Although closed/quiet when we went, the hotel's rooftop terrace (La Terraza) looked lovely with amazing views of Madrid. Well worth the visit, especially in the summer months. Just to mention as well that The Principal is in such a great location - easy walking to all the main sights and neighbourhoods. Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is a 10-15 min cab drive away, but this is pretty standard if you are staying in the city centre. The Principal is a pure gem in Madrid - the staff were amazing, ambience was quintessentially Spanish, and the little touches were great e.g. umbrellas on hotel exit which were free for guests to use when caught in the Spanish showers. Thank you to the staff at The Principal Madrid - so incredibly friendly and personable, going the extra mile for our occasion.…
Our stay at The Principal Madrid was shorter than expected due to unforeseen circumstances, but we had an overall positive experience, due largely to the exceptionally attentive customer service exhibited by most every staff member we encountered. Special kudos to Maria, the front officer manager, for going out of her way to be of assistance, and to Luis for his prompt and attentive transportation service. The hotel is in a prime location, and while the design aesthetic may not be to everyone’s liking (hallways and rooms are appointed in a dark color scheme), the building itself is beautiful. The rooftop bar and outdoor breakfast venue were a highlight, too.
Apart from hotel being a gem; location, building, style. terraces, printing all tickets for the tennis etc. main reason for review is to personally thank Jose from Reception/Concierge. I left my rucksack at the airport and only realized when arriving at hotel, he took the details, called airport, police, security companies for constantly for updates and finally just after a day, it was located and all in tact. If more people took ownership like Jose demonstrated, life would be so much better. Unfortunately he was not working my last day to thank again personally but did leave something for him with his colleagues. Once again, many thanks Jose for your help and to everyone at The Principal for a great stay
At the end of a 24 day tour of southern Spain we had a enjoyable stay at The Principal Madrid before flying home. Well located and in walking distance of the Prado Museum, the hotel was fresh and clean and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Many local restaurants were closed due to the holidays so we ended up eating dinner the first night on the rooftop patio which was beautiful and tasty (tuna bowl). The second evening we ate in the bar area and had a great party to end the trip (chicken Caesar salad). Inez the laughing server took care of us and kept us entertained both evenings. The staff was friendly and accommodating and their strong use of the English language greased the skids. Strong recommendation for the hotel!
