The Principal Madrid Hotel is much more than a luxurious modern boutique hotel. Its prime location in the heart of Madrid, its exclusive entrance, its 76 elegantly appointed rooms, the stunning Terraza (rooftop terrace,7th floor) with what may be the best views in Madrid, and its Ático (penthouse, 6th floor) where avant-garde haute cuisine meets classic cocktails in a space with the best music are reasons enough not to miss the opportunity of discovering this renovated building, now one of the capital’s must-see sights. The hotel’s impressive Ático and Terraza boast the best panoramic views of downtown Madrid. In both, amid large, lush garden areas, you can sip a cocktail or order from the menu concocted by Ramón Freixa (2 Michelin stars), soak up some sun in the Solarium or enjoy the sound of the overflow pool and the best ambient music or our outdoor showers in summer… and always with the finest service to ensure that your every wish is granted.

Called Adrian direct to enquire about rooms and prices, and he was just utterly lovely, kind and funny, ensuring we were given the best room and rate for our 3 person family visit. We accepted it there and then as he was trustworthy and there just are not many big city hotels where you feel like the owner really wants to help you to come. There was no falseness and the hotel is small enough for all the staff to enjoy being there as a team. He followed through and the room was pared-down chic, cool and inviting, the Super King topper was so comfortable, the room itself so quiet despite its totally central location above very busy roads, the windows seal perfectly and the aircon is very quiet. It is a rounded building with classic marble and wrought-iron central staircase, and the reception is at the top with sense of elegant calm living, and looks out through to the beautiful balcony with olive trees, travertine, cane, marble, and sky. The terrace one floor up is gorgeous, also greenery and views and simply space to lounge and be in the light and warm air. We ate on the balcony at the Artico restaurant and had the most sumptuous paired wines with each course and the care and attention of the lead waiter. Their belief in what they do is profound and contagious. We spent the most lovely 5 days at the end of May 2022.

We stayed at The Principal Madrid on the recommendation of friends, and we owe them a drink! It's very conveniently located the center of Madrid, and we were able to walk to many things like the Prado, Reina Sofia, the Malasana neighborhood, and so much more. We took a bus from the airport to the hotel within 30 minutes, and the train station was only 1.5 miles away. So location - check!

The staff was exceptionally kind and gracious, and we found the beds very, very comfortable. The coffee and tea in the rooms were very high quality, and everything was beautifully decorated as well. The concierge and front desk were very helpful with directions and transit, and their private driver took us to the train station for free when we went to Sevilla. We will definitely be staying here again when we return to Madrid!

My daughter and I visited Madrid for the first time. We are delighted that we chose to stay at The Principal: The location is perfectly central and we walked everywhere throughout our three day stay: We preferred to experience the city by walking instead of taking the metro The taxi to and from the airport was a set 30euros each way:
Every member of staff at the hotel was friendly competent and professional. We felt very well looked after. Water was complimentary each day, and coffee/teabags etc were replenished. The air con didn’t work one evening, and when I phoned reception it was fixed immediately. The room was amazing (complimentary upgrade was very much appreciated). Wonderful shower, decor and the beds were comfortable. The sixth floor bar was luxurious and the mixologist made fantastic cocktails. I will recommend this gorgeous hotel to anyone staying in beautiful Madrid. One of the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed in. We didn’t try out the impressive looking restaurant because we are both vegan . There are many wonderful vegan options in Madrid

This hotel was very nice and the personnel were very helpful. We were welcomed warmly and they were even able to accommodate our early arrival which was super appreciative. They even helped us find a place to get our mediatory Covid test (insert eye roll here) to enter the US. The lobby and roof terrace were spectacular and for my 19 year old daughter, was a hit for Instagram pictures (insert another eye roll. hahaha).

Things as a traveler, I would want to know: The rooms are spacious and surprisingly quiet at night given the location. The beds are on the firm side but roomy and comfortable. They don't have a ton of outlets in the room, and you will need an adapter (for deep sockets) if not from Europe. Our adapters have a plug adapter plus 2 USB ports so that worked. The bathroom is beautiful but not a ton of storage or counter space. We had to put things on the floor or on a shelf out in the room. In a perfect world they would have a shelf under the sink to store things. The shower is an open shower concept which I normally don't particularly care for because I get cold, but there is a large towel warmer that keeps the room nice and toasty. They have full-sized shampoo, conditioner and body gel bottles so that is nice not having to get a ton of the little bottles. The room temperature was easily controllable and comfortable, and the windows can open.

Overall we would definitely stay again. Very upscale and central to everything. We had a great stay!

I don’t know if everyone is exhausted or unhappy or maybe they think that at 5 star hotels the staff isn’t supposed to smile. The waitstaff and front desk, while responsive enough, just weren’t welcoming. We opted to drink in our room a couple of nights because the waitstaff was so icy. They were like that with everyone, not just us.
The maids and bellmen were more relaxed.
And breakfast from room service was always a crapshoot. It’s around 30 euros a person no matter what you order. The first morning I asked for 1 order of toast, 1 yogurt, 1 order of fruit, 1 orange juice, and 2 coffees.
They asked how many people and I said 2 so they brought a bunch of stuff we didn’t ask for and were told we couldn’t order breakfast a la carte and were charged almost 60 euros.
The restaurant closes surprisingly early for Madrid and the room service menu is very limited.
On the other hand, the room, though smallish, was very cozy and comfortable and the bed was HEAVEN!
Except for normal daytime and evening street noise it was very quiet.
The bathroom was smallish and has a very annoying black glass partition but it’s clean and seems new and everything works well. The shower is especially nice.
The hotel is smack in the middle of everything including the Chueca district and every imaginable type of bar and restaurant. Super easy walking to many major sights.
Because of the service I’m not sure I’d call it 5 star. But then they don’t charge as much as the other 5 star hotels do.

Located in an Art Noveau building that formerly housed a former private club, this hotel is extremely particular about the details. The beds are comfortable. The rooftop bar has a stunning view of Madrid. Everything is spotless.
But without question, the best thing about this hotel is the staff. From the moment you enter the building, you are warmly greeted by the doorman who seems to really want to help you with your bag. Check in meant a glass of cava and a friendly chat with Elena, who provided wonderful service and information for us. The entire staff seemed anxious to please, but beyond that, seemed to be in the hospitality business in the best sense of the word. I would love to stay in this little gem in the heart of Madrid again. I hope that you get the chance.

This hotel was great! The check-in was great, the roof top bar was great, all of the staff was very attentive. It was also a convenient location for exploring the city. The staff went above and beyond any time we had questions about the room or area. They gave us great suggestions for restaurants and when we requested an ice bucket to enjoy a bottle of cava we bought in the city the bucket was in our room before we got back. Truly great service!

We stayed at The Principal Madrid for 2 nights and we were thrilled with our experience. They really pay attention to detail here and everyone we encountered was very friendly. The building is extremely well located on Gran Via and is just a short walk to pretty much anywhere in central Madrid.

The lobby is actually on the 6th floor of the building, and is very well appointed and stylish. There are a couple of restaurants on the same floor, and there's a rooftop bar on the 7th floor (which we didn't have the opportunity to visit this time). Our check-in agent was friendly and efficient.

I had splurged and booked a Suite Gran Via...wow, what a treat. The suite appears to be a normal room but with a connecting door unlocked that leads into a massive living and dining room, with windows overlooking the plaza across the street from the hotel. Having so much space was incredible, with all the furniture being pretty new and stylish. The bathroom was clean and modern, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The windows blocked pretty much all noise from the street - which I was very, very grateful for. Blackout curtains also allowed for an excellent sleep.

I tip my hat to the team at The Principal - I will be back next time I'm in Madrid.

My family of 4 (2 adults + 2 kids) stayed at The Principal over Christmas. The front desk folks here are wonderful, they are so kind and accommodating. A few days before we checked in, I received a WhatsApp msg from the concierge asking the names and ages of my children. Turns out, they had prepared wrapped gifts for the children to open under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning! It was so beautiful and an amazing idea. We stayed in the Gran Via suite with a connecting room, so we had a large living room and 2 bedrooms. The housekeeping realised we had small children and on the second day, they had installed a bed rail on one of the beds when they saw I had used a suitcase stand and pillow in the event he fell off the bed - so thoughtful and proactive, this was really much appreciated. Every single night the turn down service left a nice treat, chocolate lollipop, sweets etc for the kids. On Christmas Eve they even left a note from Santa to each child! The hotel is very sophisticated, very trendy, so it was so amazing to have this family friendly service - during our 4 night stay we did not encounter any other families with small children, but we didn’t feel out of place at all, quite the opposite. The location is very good, walking distance to Retiro Park, the arts and craft market, Plaza Mayor etc. We will be back.

I had very high expectations of the hotel given highly it was rated. We experienced 3 issues in the hotel:

1. Extremely poor internet. I needed to work for much of the stay and both they main hotel internet as well as the internet in the restaurant were extremely poor. Voice or video conferencing was effectively impossible. I checked with others in the lobby using the internet and they had the same issue.

2. The room smelled. They put in a room parfume / deodorant in (with electric dispenser that you plug into the well) but this just covered the smell rather then removed it and the scent was too heavy.

3. We travelled with a child, so we were supposed to be 3 people in the room. However, the hotel didn't prepare the room and had to wait for 30 minutes to have this done (which was not great given that we arrived around 11pm.) Moreover, they wanted to charge the child extra ~100 EUR per night even though we clearly booked a room for 2 + 1. This may have been a problem with the booking sit - Booking.com - but it nevertheless took an hour of back and forth between calls to booking.com and the reception before it was resolved. (In the end they offered to arrange a free airport transfer for us a way of saying sorry, but this never happened and we had to pay the transfer ourselves.)

On the positive side, the hotel has a nice lobby with a great view and the location of the hotel is great. Rooms are nice but I wasn't keen on the very dark (black) style.
