My husband and I travel to Rome very regularly (for work) and have stayed in all sort of places. San Jouan Guest House proved to be one of the best so far. The location is excellent - just between Manzoni and San Giovanni metro stations and a walkable distance to the Colosseum. The guest house is built in a private... More

Firstly I would like to say if you want all mod cons, this may not be the place for you. That said we had good wifi and a room safe. Last time I stayed in Rome I stayed in a 5 star hotel and paid £600 more for a 4 night break than I did in San Jouan. I know... More

We stayed at the San Jouan in March. Firstly this isn't a B&B and if you pay the extra for breakfast it's literally toast and 2/3 cereals. The guest house was okay, we stayed as a group so had 4 rooms in total. The bed linen and towels were clean and the rooms all had the 'simple' look but they... More

Spent our first night in Rome in a shadey hostel so this place was very well received. Email communication before arrival helped make it easy even with turning up before 8am. They gladly held our bags for us while we spent the day exploring. On return at the end of the day our bags had been placed in our room.... More

Well to start, I emailed the B and B to request the shuttle from the airport,to which I had no reply, the room we were given on arrival made me cry! It could only be described as aladins cave! Dark, dingey and NOTHING like the pictures! I requested a change of room as I refused to sleep in there! The... More

We stayed 3 nights in March. San Jouan is an excellent little place. Immaculately clean, modern and well located this guest house is 5 minutes walk to Manzoni Metro and about 15 minutes walk to the Colosseum. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and it feels very safe and secure. On the whole, it is very quiet but we... More

Hidden and secure room is basic but as its only needed for sleeping and having a shower it served its purpose you couldn't stay this cheaply in any other major cities. Downside for us was there was no kettle too make a tea of coffee in the morning. Oh and towels not changed for 3 days when we left them... More

Booked this place via booking.com as was cheapest and most central we could afford. Quite small, rooms are basis but serve a purpose. It is very small with little amenities. Our room (3) had a very annoying banging noise constantly from what sounded like a defective air conditioning units perhaps. Overall just average.

Staying in Esquilino

Neighbourhood Profile
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
