Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I am stunned by the positive reviews of this 'hotel'. My husband and I booked 4 days in Rome at Hotel Barrett after having spent 2 months in Italy. We had come from Palermo where we stayed at a wonderful hotel and knew Hotel Barrett would be a step down, but I had no idea what a step down it was. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived at around 3pm so we took the front desk person's advice and went out to lunch. When we came back (after climbing several flights of stairs - no lift) we were shown to our room. It was tiny with no place to open luggage unless you put in on the bed. There was a decrepit refrigerator which contained a bunch of packaged food and we were welcomed to have our breakfast in bed (because there was no other place to have breakfast other than sitting on the bed). The floor was dirty. There was this weird massage chair taking up so much space in the tiny room. The front desk clerk then left us and I literally sat down on the bed and started to cry - I couldn't imagine staying for 4 days in a tiny, cramped dirty room. Mind you, we do not routinely stay in 5 star hotels. We stayed in 17 different places on our trip and they were mostly B&B's. Nothing fancy, but all were decently sized and clean. This place is not a hotel. It is one step above a hostel. Don't be fooled by the photos. They don't even have photos of our room on their site because it was so bad. Maybe it's OK for a 19 year old backpacker but not for anyone expecting cleanliness and comfort. My husband and I immediately found and booked an alternative and left because to stay there for 4 nights would have ruined our final 4 days in Italy.

Hotel's Favourite
We recently stayed at the Hotel Barrett during our trip to Rome for our daughters 18th birthday. We cannot recommend it highly enough. The room was fabulous with the most amazing view, however the staff were even more fabulous. Nothing was too much trouble, they were so welcoming and friendly. Would highly recommend and definitely return. An amazing hotel and great location!!

Pros: Nice staff, great location in close proximity to many of the major sites our driver said this was one of the best locations you can be in) and the fully stocked mini fridge full of food (even some Prosecco and Peroni!) was appreciated. Beds were comfy and very unique decor used throughout the hotel! It's a hoot! Loved the included slippers and quality toiletries. Cons: Bc this is not your typical modern hotel, there is no elevator and there are about 5 flights of stairs to get to your room. They do have porters who help (thank God!). Could have used more direction on how to leave the gated entrance. The wifi names changed between morning and night and was confusing. Could have been better if they left a sheet of detailed instructions in the room. There was also a pervasive nasty smell from the bathroom (like festering urine). I've noticed this in other European hotel bathrooms. It's likely to do with their old plumbing - but it bothered me :/

WOW. That is all that I can say about this place. We had the most incredible time at the hotel. The location was perfect, easily being able to walk to all parts of Rome without any issue. The staff was world class and we loved our rooms. This was a perfect trip, and staying here definitely played a role in that

We stayed here after spending two weeks touring Sicily. Picked it due to the amazing location and quirkiness! The mini bar can be used to eat your way through breakfast and lunch any day! With restocking every day. Annetta was the most amazing welcoming host I've experienced; thanks so much! Yes, you have to walk up multiple levels (it's a 16th century building); it was charming once you found your way around. Great AC and wifi too. The massage chair and foot massager were more than welcome after walking through Rome every day. The location is perfect for walking almost anywhere in Rome (which we did). Would stay there again without even having to consider it!

I'm a little perplexed by the abundance of 5 * reviews for the Hotel Barrett. Overall we had a decent stay: terrific location, friendly and helpful staff, bright room with great view of the Largo Argentina ruins, good A/C, and strong internet. However, there were a few quirky things worth noting: the lobby is full of "stuff" (statuary, big pieces of art, ornate decor, overstuffed furniture, kitsch, etc); the room was also full of more "stuff" - massage chair, foot massager, things not shown in the pictures! You have to be buzzed in from the street level and walk up multiple flights of steps to get to the hotel (no elevator). And the "breakfast" meant that the room's mini fridge was packed full of stuff (yogurt, hard boiled eggs, etc) and plastic-wrapped individual baked goods were available in baskets around the room, as well as a coffee maker, toaster oven, hot dog maker (?). (Perhaps some might find these helpful but it made the room even more crowded). The bathroom didn't have a regular door, but an accordian-like closure. Small shower. I'd say the hotel overall was OK, but a bit weird.

The positives: This hotel has extremely quirky decor, fun even, Alberto and Annetta could not have been friendlier and kinder. Very helpful and approachable guest service. We loved them! The room was a double and a twin, crowded but fine, every known snack is provided for free to include Prosecco, olives, baked goods, beer, water, jam, crackers etc. also a good espresso machine, as well as a toaster oven. Alberto greeted us with wine and cookies, several good maps and a book of Rome. I can’t tell you how wonderful the service is! Our room (21) looked out into Largo Argentin, where ongoing excavation has turned up many new ruins. Julius Caesar was assassinated there. It is a short walk to Colosseum, the Forum, Altare de la Patria and the Jewish quarter. Very close also to Trastevere and all the Centro Storico sights. We walked to Trevi, the Pantheon and the Steps without a problem. I do recommend this hotel but beware the showers! Alas the only issue we had was the shower. We are 2 women but it was so tiny we had bruises on our elbows from banging into the wall, also impossible to shave anything in there lol!! My husband would not be able to fit in the shower there. Having said that I would stay there again if only. E cause if the wonderful people who work there and the location.

This is the most wonderful hotel I've ever been to! Very beautiful decoration of the rooms, a place with a history, a refrigerator full of delicious food, a massage chair in the room. Very nice and friendly people work at this hotel and give nice gifts. The children and I really liked it. We will definitely come back here again

We went for our honeymoon in December and we could not have asked for a better experience. They gave us a large list of recommendations of things to do and places eat. We felt so at home here and we are so grateful for Annetta who was always so helpful and just lovely. They keep the minibar stocked daily and there were a couple of days where we were so exhausted from jet lag that we just stayed in and ate the food provided in the room. We will definitely be staying here again. Thank you so much to Annetta and the staff for taking such great care of us and we hope to be seeing you again in the next couple of years.

Will situated, quirky and comfortable hotel in the centre of Rome. The staff were welcoming and friendly, always keen to provide us with recommendations and information about the city. We loved chatting with them. The mini-fridge was well-stocked and we loved the massage chair and foot massager - essential with all that walking you do around Rome! The decor in the lobby and rooms made it feel more fun and special. A great place to stay.
