Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

This hostel gets a 5 out of 5 vote from me and you won't find anyone as fussy as me when it comes to hostel reviews. I don't understand the mixed reviews it has been given by people staying here at the same time as myself?
The staff are very friendly and help you as much as possible.....a special shout out to Ciara who is very lovely. My room was very clean and my bunk had a charging point, night light and curtain. The only minor problem are the lockers are small and square so you can't really get anything in them - they need changing to bigger ones!
The meeting area is just a ten foot square area next to the reception desk with only around six seating places and likewise the kitchen area is also small with a single long table for breakfast that can only seat around twelve people at any one time.
The main reasons for this is the hostel is small overall and also only has three shower rooms with the toilets housed within these rooms. This can be very annoying because if you're dying to use the toilet and all three showers are being used, you cannot gain access.
The breakfast is substantial as it's an all you can eat comprising of tea, coffee and orange juice. To eat you have fruits, yogurt, ham, salami, cheese and salad. For the English pallet you have different cereals, toast, cakes, biscuits and the use of butter, jam and chocolate spreads. There's also a coffee perculator which can be used at anytime during the day. Within the kitchen there's a large fridge to store your own personal food items if you wish. You are expected to wash up all your items after you finish which is no big deal but something I don't agree with on principle. I'm on holiday and I've paid for my B&B so I don't expect to do their job for them - maybe that's just me?
The location of the hostel is very good and within easy reach of the main city centre and tourist attractions with various buses a two minute walk from the front door and the main railway station just a fifteen minute walk away

I have mixed feelings about this hostel. I do believe it’s the best hostel choice in Bologna. However, it fell short for me a few times. First of all, the city tax and any extras must be paid in cash. This was not advertised in any confirmation emails that I recall so I barely had enough for city tax upon arrival. I had to go to the ATM to pay for my towel rental. A heads up would have been nice so I could have ensured I had enough for all my extras I needed (my hostel in Rome lumped it in with the bunk credit card payment so that’s what I expected in Bologna as well). Secondly, although I ultimately had success, it was a struggle to get my laundry done. They advertise laundry service both on the website and on signs throughout the hostel, so I planned to have my laundry done at Dopa. When I asked the first day, I was told there wasn’t time (it was 4pm). The second morning I was told they didn’t have time (I asked at 8am). After I came back to the hostel that afternoon there was suddenly time for them to do my laundry so I took them up on it instead of scrambling to find a laundromat. My clothes were given back to me still slightly wet which wasn’t ideal for the €7 pricetag but I hung them on the hangers near my bunk to finish drying overnight. If laundry service wasn’t a guarantee I do feel it should be advertised that way (“laundry service as time & resources allow”). Otherwise the hostel was a typical hostel - loud, and a struggle to get into the bathrooms when you needed one (3 showers & 3 toilets shared amongst all guests). But the location was good & felt safe. And the staff did a great job keeping it clean, especially the bathrooms given how many people use them. If I was on a budget I would stay here again but I would prioritize a hotel first if possible.

Despite what they say on the website it's not actually a luxury hostel.
With this I don't mean it's bad, rather it's a very small place with a kitchen and a common area where you can't help yourself from socializing with other people. It's managed like an apartment with the girl at the reception taking care of anything, she's also very sociable and ready to give you all the information you need. Breakfast is basic, but ok.
They sell beer at a fair price compared to other hostels, in any case there are a lot of mini and supermarkets in the surroundings where to buy drink and food to be stored in the fridge.
Breakfast is basic, but still OK.
Only real downside is that the locker is quite small.

Dear Guest, we are sorry for breakfast, we know that is not special but Covid rules about breakfast are really strict in this period. About lockers are made in a way to keep all valuables, but not clothes even because nobody steal clothes. Hope to see you again and thank you for your comment!

Dopa is a little and very comfortable hostel right in the middle of Bologna (it is not such a Big city, so the hostel is extremely close to everything). Very nice and clean, with good bathrooms and kitchen. Very nice and “private” even though you lived in a shared dorm. You sleep extremely well and its a Very Nice and spacious room. Very Good service and staff. Really an enjoyable stay and would stay there again.

Room is clean and the curtain on the bed gives nice privacy, though It would have been better if the lockers were bigger. Service is great, check out and check in was very easy. Chiara was as helpful and friendly as it gets. Location is amazing, juat a short walking distance to everything. Everyone was respectful and kept quiet at night, yet It wasn't hard to make friends especially during the shared breakfast.
Would definitely recommend.

I stayed for 3 nights and the Hostel is a nice Family Home adapted to an Hostel. Nice decoration, and reasonably good welcome, but not all peoplein the reception was nice.. Yet, breakfast was to short, and if you want to eat more will be difficult to get it.Rooms are nice, but tend to be a little bit noisy.. Its overpriced for what you get. Really can not understand why is so expensive! Location is good. Easy to find when you arrive from airport at nigt.

I have been staying at Dopa since January.
At first it would be to find an apartment in Bologna, but finding an apartment here is not easy ...
The weeks passed and my sympathy for the place and for all the people who work here grew, so much so that, while many are dissatisfied with being quarantined, I am happy to stay in Dopa!
At Dopa I feel at home!

I stayed here few days in February. The place is clean and nice but has a lot of negatives. I feel alot of these reviews are inaccurate. I start with in the morning there is very few showers which you can wait longer than 15min. The breakfast is poor cheap quality food. At night the noise is too much as the common room is close to the rooms where they have music until late and people making alot of noise until 5am. WiFi had many problems. In all honesty giving this genuine review... for this price the hostel is a rip off. Would not recommend this place. P.S staff should know the politeness towards customers and mind their own business!!

Dear Frank, The food for breakfast is partially organical and fresh, and partially high brand quality (like Mulino Bianco, Kellogs, Zuegg, Quakers and Granarolo for example), and that's not common on accomodations around the world. Music switch of at midnight in the commons area and people are requested to be quite at midnight...everyday. WiFi is perfect and fast, as everybody else noticed. Staff try to be kind with each guest, except when it is not treated with respect or when arrogance is used by a guest because we are human being and not slaves, first of all. If 99% of our guest love this place they are probably right. We noticed also that you left 6 reviews out of 14th like terrible on tripadvisor. Maybe you have your point of view about reviews is questionable...but just MAYBE. :)

We stayed here on a stop over en route further south but greatly enjoyed our stay here. It was difficult to find as it was located within a building and needed to be buzzed from the entrance door. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with a communal seating area and well equipped kitchen to be used freely. Breakfast was included in the price of the rooms and was delicious with varying options. Thanks for a great stay!

We stayed here for 4 nights and loved it thoroughly! We found this hostel through the “great hostels of the world” book and we weren’t disappointed whatsoever. From the moment we checked in to the moment we checked out, we were treated so well and made to feel at home. Big kudos to the guy who works on the front desk and the Belgian lady too who was really lovely and friendly. Definitely would recommend joining one of the “family meals” on a Tues / Thurs night, some of the best food id had in Bologna for only €5! Definitely recommend Dopa, DEFINITELY coming back.
