Just a few kilometres from the centre of Parma, in the small, homely village of Porporano, a young couple devised and organised this place of delightful rest. Next to the main villa, in the garden grounds, springs an old rural cottage, built in solid stone brick with a hayloft above. This simple country site has been transformed into a charming cottage for guests; 5 rooms with en suite bathroom, communal area, a large kitchen, spacious veranda protected by glass which separates it from the enchanting green. Keeping the atmosphere of times gone by with its rough walls spaced out with blocks of pebble stone in place of bricks and the dimension of the hayloft which still astonishes those who enter; the rooms where the rough wooden floor gives harmony to the colours. The owners have furnished each room carefully and with passion: with iron headboards and delicately embroidered curtains and tapestry in thick linen, once forgotten in an old trunk. The cottage of Porporano, a place where hospitality is not only a profession but a style of life.

This hotel is exactly as it looks on the pictures. It's absolutely stunning. There are antique pieces throughout the property, the rooms are unique, and there's a very calm atmosphere especially on the property's garden area. 1 negative point is that we did not get breakfast and there was no one to serve us. We waiting from 8am onward and decided to leave.

Dear guest, thank you very much for taking the time to write your review. I am very happy that you enjoyed Villino di Porporano and its calm atmosphere! As you were informed at the time of check in breakfast is served from 8.30 to 10.30. However we always meet the needs of our guests and are always available to serve breakfast a little in advance if requested. if you had warned us of your need to have breakfast at 8,00 there would not have been this inconvenience for which I am very sorry. A warm greeting, Elena

This B and B is spectacular in every way!! The best one hands down we have stayed at in Italy so far!! If you go to Parma this is the place to stay! Elena goes above and beyond any hostess we have had at a bed and breakfast. She is so friendly and warm! She takes the time to make the place welcoming and comfortable, as well as giving you so many useful pointers about the area. She planned our days for us as to where to go and what to see. Her staff is equally as sweet and caring!! The rooms are decorated with her impeccable taste and every nook and cranny is a photo opt! The breakfast is out of this world! All homemade goodies; including vegetable filled pastries, danishes, fresh fruit, assorted breads, cheeses, yogurt and they will make you eggs if you would like! You will be thrilled to be there and will not want to leave!!

From the moment we stepped onto the property our group of two couples was completely charmed. The owner, the cook and all of the staff we met were so helpful and kind. The property was so well kept and was a little oasis on the outskirts of Parma. We did not want to leave the backyard! The breakfast in the morning was the very best way to start my day and the cook was just incredibly generous and attentive. Our rooms were perfect - nothing too fancy but exactly what you need and want if you're looking for a relaxing time in Italy. It was centrally located and easy to get to Parma and other surrounding restaurants. I'd love to return one day!

We stayed here for a few nights on a girls trip through Italy and LOVED it. The Villa is adorable and so charming. We spent afternoons at the amazing pool and gardens drinking local wine and eating ice cream. Manu and the other staff were all amazing, so sweet, and always helpful. Manu made reservations for us each night for dinner at local spots that were delicious and always so welcoming!

The rooms were adorable (we had 2 for 4 of us). All unique, well designed, clean, and charming yet updated! The air conditioning worked great which was huge given the heat that time of year. The Villa has been restored beautifully. The breakfast was incredible! We enjoyed eating the freshly made breads, pastries, pancakes and of course local Parma cheese and fruits every morning on the patio.

Overall we had an incredible stay and was one of the highlights of our trip! The only downside was we had hoped to a cooking class which was how we found the place but understood that it didn’t work out this trip so we will just have to come back!

Everything was fantastic. So clean, new room with new bathroom. No elevator so stairs are required. Lots of parking and 10 minute car drive into heart of Parma. Would highly recommend this quaint B&B. The outside garden is where breakfast is eaten and allowed for a serene and relaxing morning.

I have been visiting Porporano nearly every year for 7 years. I make a special trip just to see Elena, her beautiful family, and the most magical property in the whole region. Elena has the golden touch. Everything she does is jewel-like. Her gardens, her cooking, her charming breakfast, all the details in the rooms, the interior decor, everything. It is an absolute gem of a place with a beautiful pool and area to have breakfast outside. The ultimate in charm and elegance.

I can't say enough how wonderful this place is. The house and gardens are beautiful and the pool lovely. The breakfast was excellent with homemade foods and lovely surroundings on the terrace. Bed was very comfortable. I would happily have stayed for a very long time and will definitly be back.

It seems a trifle pernickety to grumble about such a beautifully appointed restoration. But to be excellent, a place must have the creature comfort factors as well and everything should work perfectly at this price, and Porporano just didn't have that Wow factor for us Let's start with the positives: beautiful looking, decorated tastefully, secluded, delightful gardens, loveable dogs, excellent breakfast, friendly staff. But against this I consider the following negatives: 1.the surrounding area is suburban Parma with a busy adjacent road, traffic noise (in the room we had...Madreperla); 2. a very small double bed (I am five foot six inches on a good day, and my feet stuck out of the end), with linen sheets...although an experienced traveller, I have never slept on linen sheets before, but if you are used to cotton, then linen is....well....different and not altogether comfortable; 3. a nice pool, but one hour by the pool resulted in being bitten by every insect in the garden, not exactly the fault of the Villa, but be warned! ; 4. A lack of hot water to the shower in our room ( I don't care that our room is at the end of the hot water circuit, when I run a shower for about 5 minutes I expect it to come hot); 5. The wifi didn't work in our bedroom unless you stood at the door.
So in terms of value for money (we paid e130 per night) it misses the mark compared to many other b&bs we stayed in on this trip at the euro 90 mark. It's beautiful, but not everything was satisfactory, and that isn't good enough at this price.

Response from Elena C, Proprietario at Villino di Porporano
Responded 14 Aug 2014
Dear Guest, First of all, let me thank you for your review and specifically for appreciating our friendly staff, our breakfast, our decor and even our beloved dogs- which are all true tenets here at the Villino di Porporano. Let me however be more precise on few of your comments: 1. the surrounding area is residential and the adjacent road is mainly used by residents. At night it is really quiet. 2. The bed, as the web-site clearly indicates, is a queen size bed 160x190 cm. Sheets are of fine linen, washed with natural soaps and ironed here at the premises (and not at some industrial laundry). Yes, we do agree: you really cannot compare them with cotton stuff … However if you did not like the experience, you might just tell us to replace them with some ordinary sheets- and we would surely do. 3. If you want to avoid mosquitos, we recommend that you visit Italy in a different season. Certainly not in August. For the record, we do weekly treatments in order to control mosquitos: however we use natural methods for avoiding to intoxicate our guests or to cancel all signs of life in the garden… 4. Hot water is 45 centigrades…Honestly, in 5 years we have never received a complaint about it 5. In the communal areas wi-fi works fine. Your are right that the signal in the bedrooms is a bit weak but usually once connected there are no problems. For 130 euro per night you get: - double bed-room with antique furniture and fine linen; - sheets washed and ironed at the premises, and not industrially; -buffet breakfast: cakes, croissant, bread, eggs, ham, ricotta, cheese, yogurt, preserves, freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh fruit, tea, coffee, cappuccino: all unlimited and all made by us using high quality produce from local providers/growers. Also the breakfast that you liked so much therefore is included in the 130 euros; - towels changed daily; - slippers; -shampoo, balsam, shower gel, body lotion and soap; - bottle of mineral water; - towels for the pool; -use of the pool and other communal spaces. On top of that, we served you twice tea and biscuits, pool side and in the living room; at no extra charge, of course, as we do for all our guests. Are you sure that the 90 Euros b&b’s offer a service like this? Or could not it be that your review suffers from some bias since we applied a penalty (that we are entitled to apply) for the cancellation of your second night stay, of which you informed us too late and only upon your arrival at the Villino …? Many Kind Regards Elena Maria Ciotti

We thought we had struck it lucky when we found great accommodation, through Tripadvisor, in Venice earlier this month. Our next stop was Parma, and we had booked into Villino di Porporano which is situated outside of the city. This turned out to be our best accommodation in Italy. Our bedroom and bathroom were very tastefully appointed and the rest of the beautifully converted barn was just as good. Elena, the owner, was fantastic. She offered to cook dinner for us on our first night - a beautiful three course meal with fresh produce from the area. It was so good that we asked her to cook for us the next night too. The breakfasts were excellent too.The B&B is set in a beautiful garden with a big swimming pool which we relaxed around on our second afternoon there. All in all this was just a great stay.
