We've been visiting Venice for decades and stayed in many wonderful places including some of the most renowned luxury hotels. But this popular pensione on the Giudecca Canal is my favorite by far. Two weeks in room #4—a modest and comfortable first-floor corner, with two large windows on the front and a windowed door onto a big deck—has been heaven!... More

La Calcina is away from the crowds of Venice, but not away from excellent restaurants, including its own which benefits from being on the water as well as having good food. The staff were very approachable and professional. i enjoyed the ambience and the location which allowed for interesting uncrowded walks in several directions.

Pleasant location and pleasant staff. We had the partial view room on the 4th floor. Windows in two directions and able to get a nice view of the water traffic on the canal. Hotel is on one of the larger canals with a broad range of boats, right up to cruise ships going by. Direct water shuttle link to the... More

Pensione La Calcina is located in the Academia area of Venice. It's a lovely spot - lots of good restaurants, museums, but lacking the overwhelming crowds of central Venice. All the tourists attractions are within walking distance and you can catch a Water Bus from the train station (7.50 Euro) right to the hotel area - very short walk. Venice... More

Our stay at the Pensione La Calcina hotel was an overpriced and outdated disappointment. We picked this hotel because Frommer's recently listed it in their Top 10 Venice Hotels. Our personal observations: the mattress was lumpy and hammock-shaped and the pillows were disgusting. No air conditioning in guest rooms or fans available. Bathtub was filthy and didn't have a shower... More

Friends recommended this place, and they have stayed a number of times. We don't typically stay in Pensione's, but we felt overall our experience was quite good. The location was superb on the Guidecca canal, just near the Zattare Vaporetti stop- very convenient, and a short walk to the Accademia stop on the Grand Canal. This area felt more neighborhood... Loved my stay here. Staff was helpful, courteous and attentive. Breakfast was elegant, quiet and fulfilling. The location is awesome, at least for my purposes. I attended a wedding about 3 minutes away at a church on the Dorsoduro, so I wanted to be close. IT was also a short walk to St. Mark's or the Rialto. The Vaporetto stops... More

This was our second visit to La Calcina. The staff and location make the stay there just about perfect. We spent the money for an outside room and it was worth it. Very comfortable. The breakfasts were good with plentiful food and one can also order dishes not on the buffet. We found the restaurant generally lacking for other meals,... More

Venice is a romantic heaven, to remind us all of that special person, while at every turn you are walking through a work of art. We stayed at the Pensione La Calcina on the Dorsoduro and near the Zattere taxi stop. The canal view room was delightful and the restaurant set on stilts in the Guidecca Canal superb. Staff lovely... A great place to have lunch by the Guidecca Canal and not a rip off like those next to the Grand Canal. Smartly attired and attentive wait staff, simple but fresh and tasty food well presented. Would consider a stay here next time.

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
