Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

The 5 of us stayed here over New Year for 3 nights. The location is perfect being only 100m from the Rialto Bridge and its express boat (No 2) to the main railway station. Close to St Marks square also. Sure there is the two storey climb to reception with your luggage but you

Lovely hotel in a fantastic location. Couple of minutes walk from Rialto bridge and ten/fifteen minute walk from St Marks square. Just be aware that you need to go up a couple of flights of stairs to get into the hotel but if this isn't for you then Venice probably isn't

A very well-located budget hotel with friendly and helpful staff who speak English. The room was quiet, very clean, the linen and towels fresh and white with a basic but nice continental breakfast included. I think this is a very good choice for this type and quality of hotel (2

The best way I would suggest is at the airport you can but a water bus ticket for 50 euro for 3-5 days. Come out of the airport and walk through a covered tunnel that takes you right to the pick up point for water buses to all the main areas. Ask and they will put you on the right water bus, get off at st marks and it is a just ten minute walk to the hotel. If i were you, google directions from st marks square and it is only a few minutes walk. Hope this helps and have a wonderful time, I love Venice.

Hi There My recommendation is travel light so that you can walk as walking through Venice is an adventure in itself. It can be confusing and you can miss the signs but its a fun kind of "getting los"t not a panic 'getting lost' in Venice. The hotel reception is up a steep narrow flight or two of stairs so heavy bags can be a problem and even moreso if you booked on the upper floor from there. Of course you can also take the boats which are readily available and the hotel is less than a 5 minute walk once you off the boat. Enjoy Venice
