We stayed at the Santo Stefano Hotel, (also called the San Stefano, but not to be confused with the youth hostel of a similar name!), for two nights at the end of February 2006, having booked fairly last minute through Thomsons. We were a little concerned that the hotel still had availability so late, especially as it was the last...

Dear Trip Advisor: I have recently returned from a trip to Italy, France and Germany. I have enjoyed the hospitality of citizens of Briancon, Turin, Sestriere, Milan, Venice, Oberammagau, and Munich. However, the highpoint of my holiday was my stay at Hotel Santo Stefano in Venice. I will hold and revisit many warm memories of my stay at Santo Stefano,...

The hotel is in a great location on the square and conveniently situated for many of Venices major attractions. The reception area is small but pleasing and our room was very comfortably and tastefully decorated(except for the red plastic headboard on the bed) The owner and his staff were very friendly and welcoming and went out of their way to...

This is a boutique jewel-box of a hotel, in wonderful opulent Venetian taste, beautifully and lovingly maintained. Everything works and everything glistens and shines. Management is attentive and helpful. It is located on a delightful square an easy walk from San Marco Square, Rialto, and the Academie Bridge. Breakfast is on a little patio right on the square (or indoors...

Boutique hotel with lots of charm and located on a beautiful square. Even though the rooms and bathrooms are quite small, the fabrics and decorations are lush. The staff people spoke english well and provided great service and suggestions. The price is quite reasonable for the quality.

In 20 years of travel in Europe, the smallest hotel room I've ever stayed in -- at 280 Euros a night, a complete rip-off. Poor customer service. As a 'friendly reminder' the air conditioning was turned off on the morning of check out.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

“I liked the rooms on the side of the Campo - as high as possible. It doesn't matter if your bath is across the hall, it is private.”

“You may choose a window looking on Campo San Stefano for the atmosphere quotient. It is a beautiful and lively square. Be aware, though, that the campo is very noisy at night, so if you are a finicky sleeper you might want to refrain.”
