Myself and my husband stayed here on our trip to Italy in April. The hotel's location was excellent. We got off the waterbus at St Mark's Square and walked up the canal for what felt like ages. We then realised we had gone way too far and noticed the hotel was really near to St Mark's Square. We walked all...

When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by Diego who was very friendly and helpful. The hotel is really close to the water taxi stop of San Zaccaria and no more than a 5 minute walk to St Marks Square. The location is fantastic with a cracking little bar right next to the hotel selling lovely cheap wine...

This is a charming family run hotel in a great location. Our room was huge by European standards. We were pleasantly surprised. Front desk staff provided directions and excellent restaurant recommendations. The second restaurant recommendation had the best pasta we've ever had! Only downside is we had a room facing the courtyard which was very noisy. I'm a heavy sleeper...

The hotel staff was charming and very helpful. The hotel is ideally located near by but not too nearby to Piazza San Marco. Our room worked perfect for our needs, and we thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast service. Its a great family run operation that we hope stays in business for a very long time.

We felt like we were invited into their home and treated like family. Gabrieli and Diego were helpful in every aspect - even helping to book our next stop in Florence when the language barrier prevented us from booking a hotel. It was clean with a perfect location and nice continental breakfast.

Friendliest Hotel we have stayed in. Only minutes from the ferries and St Marks square. Good selection of restaurants and bars right on the doorstep. We had a lovely big room and cannot find anything we did not like.

The hotel is in a great location and we stayed in a nice clean room with a very comfortable bed. The bathtub/shower took a little getting used to. It was essentially a bathtub with a shower attachment that made for a pretty wet and messy shower if you weren't careful. But, in the end, we were able to shower every...

I have stayed at the Hotel Fontana several times and did so again in mid-October 2012. The hotel is location is excellent, with direct (no bridges) access to the San Zaccaria varporetto and Alilaguna (airport route) docks, and an easy walk to the San Marco plaza tourist area. Several good restaurants and small bars are located close by. The hotel...

If you are traveling to Venice, this is THE place to book! From the vaperretto stop, you only have one bridge to traverse to get to the hotel...and the upon arrival, the hotel has one of the few elevators in Italy. It is super convenient to the water transportation and you are only a 5 minute walk to St. Mark's...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
