Lovely welcome, exquisite room of suitably dilapidated chic, typically delicious breakfast and surrounded by unexpected delights of osterie and trattorie. Staff were helpful and friendly without being overbearing; palazzo was peaceful and elegant; and the whole place redolent of times when the water gate was busy with visitors and upper rooms full of trade. Little details made a difference, like...

It looks and feels like an old palace. Small hotel off the main road, very quiet, very large rooms, staff are full of good will. 10 minutes walk from the main bus station, 5 minutes to San Marco. Great breakfast is served with classic music in the background. It was a real pleasure.

We were looking for a room with a view to let Venice comes into our room. A balcony overlooking a canal seemed perfect. When we saw the picture of Hotel Palazzo Abadessa's balcony and the room attached to the balcony we knew that this what we have been looking for. We love the old and the personal feel of the...

Visited 22-25th Nov. Peaceful small hotel - 15 rooms - hidden off Main Street in Canneregio close to boat stop Fondamente Nuovo. Well presented bedroom and bathroom. Quiet garden and very helpful staff immediately ready to handle our bags, visit our table at breakfast to enquire if there was anything we needed assistance with. Slightly uninspiring buffet breakfast but served...

We returned to the Palazzo Abadessa for a birthday Bienale weekend - this time bringing my partner's grandparents whose dream it was to visit Venice - and what a perfect place from which to experience the city in all it's glamorous glory. Wonderfully convenient, the hotel is situated less than 10 minute walk from the Rialto Bridge, with the Ca...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
