Pros
Location is great, next to the sea, some of the rooms have a view and free parking is available. Until the last day, some of the employees were really polite. Lastly the room was clean except there was a spider net with small mosquitos on it.

Cons
The hotel room was so old and require a renovation, shower drain was quite blocked so you might find yourself in a small pool when taking shower. Products used at breakfast had a cheap quality.

If you buy something from the bar, make sure you read it before signing the order sheet, because they registered our order wrong in the account book and when leaving, they claimed that it was our fault because we signed the order sheet already. In the end, we paid for something that we didn’t get instead of paying for our order. It was not a big deal from pricing perspective but their behaviour was really not polite and they didn’t accept their mistake.

Yep, good spot, great location if you like to be just away from the central prom but still within walking distance of everywhere. The staff were great, helpful, friendly, discreet, calm and professional. The breakfast was varied and we could eat our fill of whatever we liked. The hotel itself is an unpretentious place with courtyards front and back. Our room was billed as sea-faving with a balcony. That's exactly what we got and enjoyed sitting out in the evenings watching the world go by. The bathroom and shower was fine, no complaints. All in all this place does what it says on the the tin, and does it very well. Thank you to all the staff who work hard every day to make El Balear the gem it is. We would have no issues recommending El Balear to our friends.

Right on the seafront, five minutes walk to the town proper this is a well situated, well run hotel. Rooms are clean and most have balconies overlooking the sea or the pretty garden. Breakfast is fine with rolls croissants ham cheese salami, jams juices and choice of drinks. Air con is efficient and tvs are provided. It is simply decorated, mostly white walls which feels right with the climate. Only one whinge; the shower aperture is not intended for the fuller figure! We paid 80 euros for the ensuite room which had three beds; breakfast is 6 euros extra for all you want.
Alghero is a delightful town with Spanish architecture and a wonderful wall walk overlooking the sea. Plenty of choice restaurants too. Drive to the caves at capo caccia for an inspiring experience in the stalactite encrusted caverns and an expiring experience climbing the 600 steps back to your car! Finally treat yourself to a day at sea with hosts Geoff and Vivienne who provide a wonderfully relaxing experience on their sail boat the Andrea Jensen. If you are interested they will share with you the story of the boat and their adventure. Otherwise they keep you topped up with delicious food and drink, some gentle cruising and opportunities to bathe/snorkel from the boat in scenic bays. Their leaflets are in the hotel or else they have a table on the harbour front where it meets the wall.
Sardina is a beautiful relaxing island and as you may have guessed we loved it!

We found a parking space on the street literally steps to the front door. Got upgraded to a sea view room with balcony for free! A/C was initially not functioning but staff immediately switched the remote and got it working.
Perfect location to walk to the walled city via seaside boardwalk across the street. The hotel has a little private beach directly across the street where we spent an afternoon drinking cocktails, sitting on rocks and enjoying the view of Capo Cacciatore, site of Neptune's cave.
The restaurant had well appointed tables and offered hearty buffet breakfasts included in price of the room.
Great find and value, would highly recommend.

Very old room with two single beds stuck together to make a double bed. Very outdated equipment, small shower with broken tiles and broken caulking. The staff was very unfriendly when we brought up the fact that the room was not what we expected comparing to the pictures on Booking.com. The location is very good (thats why I gave 2 stars) but the hotel should update its pictures to lower clients expectations.

Our room was oldfashioned but spacious and with a superb seesight. Big bathroom. Excellent breakfast and good staff overall. Corona proof. But most importantly it is one of the few hotels close to the historic center (most hotels are in the dreadful beach area).

I booked and paid for the stay long in advance. The evening before my trip I got sick and had to stay at home. The mail communication I had with the hotel was not friendly at all. In fact it was not friendly already a few days before when I still planned to come and asked them about which options there was for the half board. I reacted on the total absence of words resembling "welcome". When I on the evening before going told them about my sudden illness, their answer was totally stripped of anything resembling compassion, wishes about getting well etc. On top of it they had the guts on sending me some message about "pleasant stay" the same day I was about to check in - which they perfectly knew was impossible for me. I just feel humiliated: apart from keeping all my money for the stay not used they completely lack of human empathy or simple good manners. I guess I am lucky not having fallen ill while staying at those people's place.

Hello all,

This is our first review. We have wanted to do this for a long time, but never really took the proper notes in order to remember our experiences. We travel a lot ... at least once every couple of months. This means that we stay at a LOT of hotels - different levels of luxury, usually in the center of town with easy access to bars, restaurants and all the sights. We are not amateurs ...

I cannot say the same for El Balear. These guys have a couple of good points:

* Very presentable exterior

* Excellent location: A short (10-15 minute) walk along the "boardwalk" puts you into the historical district with the good selection of restaurants, bars and fun. The boardwalk itself affords one the opportunity to shop the open-air market and haggle with the island's African-Sardinian locals. Beaches abound everywhere, but the better beaches are a short drive away. We had a rental, so no problem.

* Helpful, friendly staff.

* Pleasant and large exterior terrace in the front of the hotel, overlooking the ocean and rocky landscape - great to drink a beer or three, read a book and watch the hotties pass.

On the negative side, the list is extensive:

* Although friendly and helpful, the hotel staff doesn't provide the typical, token tourist map to take you to the major destinations, restaurants, etc., in and around the town. Small gripe.

* Rooms:
- Small, clean, but worn. No appreciable drawer space for your clothes. Count on living out of your suitcase ... I had to keep mine next to the bed (eating up valuable space), because my wife claimed the little suitcase holder in the corner.
- Cheap, miniature TV on a desk.
- Cheap-o furniture from a 1980s fleamarket sale including a few particle-board numbers.
- A/C only works with the balcony door closed, and no adjustment controls for the room occupant that I could find.
- Bathroom is small with a tiny shower, old worn plumbing fixtures and a noisy exhaust fan. Good tile selection, however ... not 1960s pea-green.
- Bathroom door in serious need of a paint job. It could not have been painted for years.
- Toilet is old and decrepit-looking with a plastic seat that has that over-aged, "I-used-to-be-white-but-now-I'm-yellow-look".
- Toilet flush is exceptionally loud with an extend-play feature (apparently). Everytime you need to drop the kids off at the pool, you will wake up your honey and the honeys in adjacent rooms while announcing your deed to anyone walking past your room door.
- The shower does a poor job of sealing, ensuring that you will forever walk on a soaked floor after taking a shower - add a little beach sand and you get mud!

* Breakfast: Based on earlier reviews, we didn't bother.

* Other:

- No lift (or elevator, depending on your perspective). Hotel dude, however, was nice enough to carry my wife's suitcase the one floor to our room.
- Old lobby furniture with a 1960s pea-green decor.

And, I think that about does it.

Overall, I honestly think that the hotel is worth a look due to its good location and reasonable price.

However, I think that a business should always seek ways to improve. Addressing deficiencies such as this can only help.

Hope this is helpful!

Just returned from a long weekend in Alghero and stayed in this hotel. Alghero is a top spot for a couple of days away. The airport is 15 minutes from town by local bus and easy to do, so for those on a budget can avoid set 25 euro taxi fares. The hotel is in a great location about 5 minutes stroll into the old town, with a couple of bars and restaurants to call in along the way if you're lazy. From what we saw in Alghero this is the nicest part to stay in, avoiding the more modern beach hotels. The hotel staff are really friendly, but there's not a lot of English spoken so if you're Italian is a bit ropey like mine you're not going to come away with lots of information on the local area, you're pretty much left to find your way around. We were given a comfortable twin room with a sea view. The room was clean and easily accomodated two an had a nice balcony with a good view. Breakfast is extra, and at 6.50 Euros is probably not the best deal - coffee, ham, cheese etc. Good if you're only there for a couple of nights but with hindsight I'd probably eat out. We went without a car and stayed just three days which was enough for Alghero itself but it's pretty easy to get around and there's enough restaurants and beach spots to spend time in. Only slightly odd thing was the shower, really powerful but anyone over 6ft tall or a bit on the large side would struggle for room. After reading lots of reviews and checking out a couple of other hotels, would definitely recommend the El Balear for its great location and friendly staff.

We had a very small, basic and old-fashioned room on the 2nd floor, at the back of the hotel, with view on the back of a social housing block that was shielded with metal grilles and with barbed wire!
If you're not depressed yet, you might become it here.
We asked for an other room but the unfriendly clerk at the counter said there was no other one available.
So avoid the rooms at the back.
Our room was equipped with an empty fridge and a bathroom without heating.
However, the hotel is well located and the rooms at the front side have a view on the sea.
