First the good points
Excellent location 3 mins from the main street,Corso Umberto. Also our room(223)had a fantastic view across to Mount Etna.Staff on the desk were polite,Guiseppe being more friendly.
The cleaning ladies were extremely friendly, our own and the ones we passed in the corridors.
Now the not so good.
The staff in the dining room were the most miserable we have ever encountered anywhere in Italy, not one eye contact, not one buongiorno or ciao all week. They all seemed to walk about like zombies refilling trays etc but no smiles with anybody. There were no condiments on the tables ,so the first day I found the one and only salt cellar for the whole dining room, day 2 there were 2 and there always seemed to be a shortage of cutlery and having to get up and go and search for them as quite often all staff seemed to disappear back into the kitchen. It just all added up to a feeling of frustration and made breakfast a chore.
Our room although it had a good view was very dated, mustard yellow walls and red curtains, although the bathroom had been renewed, but the shower screen had not been sealed properly causing a flood every time we showered. One morning we had use the towels to mop up it was that bad.
The public rooms and corridors are also in need of updating and we had to report a stair handrail that came loose and a water leak dripping from a corridor ceiling.
The pool does have a wonderful view you access it through the gardens but it is down many steps and a bit of a trek which was too much for us.
This hotel could be so much better than it is.It has a prime position in Taormina and many rooms have wonderful views of Etna but as it is we would never return to this hotel.
However we are planning a return to Taormina.

We arrived at the Hotel at 2.30a.m., very hot and very tired, only to find the air conditioner not working, we immediately told reception, and they informed us that it could be repaired but obviously not until the next day. We remained in the room, and the next day, after having a good look around our room, and the view from the window, we returned to reception and said we weren’t happy with the room. The room and especially its bathroom was extremely old and dated, and the view was of the rear of the hotel overlooking what looked like a cross between a building site and a refuse collection area. The reception staff said they could upgrade our room for an extra €20 per night, but not until after the current guests had checked out, which wasn’t until after 11a.m., and then the room would have to be cleaned. We agreed to this, but didn’t eventually get our new room until 2.30p.m., and we were still not unpacked, and still in our original travelling clothes. The new room was much better, but for €200 for a ten night break, it ought to have been! All was then well until a few days later the hotel hosted an 18th Birthday party, with many, many guests and fireworks right outside our ground floor bedroom window at 12.30a.m. We rang reception and complained, but the party was not moved away, then I personally went to reception, still in my nightware and asked for the party to be moved away again, which eventually, after about an hour or so, it was, but the music continued for some time after that! Not good when you are trying to sleep.
Most of the breakfast was continental-as advertised, but the cooked breakfast part only consisted of a small dish of bacon and a small dish of scrambled eggs, which both took turn in running out, being eventually replaced by waiting staff that where more concerned about the pleat in the corner of the tablecloth, than keeping an eye on the amount of bacon and eggs that were constantly needing topping up! Also there were only one salt pot and one pepper pot to be shared by the whole breakfast area, the forks were not at each table setting, but instead all together hidden under a napkin-don’t know what that was all about? and you couldn’t find a teaspoon for love nor money, so had to stir your morning cuppa with a big cereal spoon. Apart from that the place was great! Beautiful gardens, lovely old hotel with bags of character, and plenty of space around the pool, with no one coming down at stupid o’clock in the morning with a towel.

This was our second visit to the hotel as part of a tour of Sicily. We chose tour dates to allow us to return to the hotel as we enjoyed our first stay so much. It is a hotel with personality, very attractive overall but with an air of faded elegance partly due to its venerable age.

The hotel has spectacular views of Etna and down to Naxos bay and the location is perfect as it allows you to stroll down the Corso Umberto directly from the entrance and gives easy access to the various sites in Taormina. It has plenty of outside seating on the terrace and a stunning swimming pool that was still open in October - a big plus. The various rooms leading to the bar are well set out and furnished, giving the chance of a quiet drink if you so wish.

The rooms were generally well appointed and of a good size - we personally had no issues with noise as we found the windows were very effective, even though we overlooked the car park. Previous visits to Sicily have made us aware that hotels often turn off aircon at this time of year, and although we found our room a bit warmer than we would have liked it didn’t disturb our sleep. There are undoubtedly some maintenance issues, chief amongst them being flooding from a number of showers: we ended up using rolled towels to limit the overflow, and as a consequence had to ask for replacements too often.

Meals were generally good given we were in a group, and the breakfast items were set out on various tables so that queues were rarely a problem, unlike our last hotel. The dining room staff were good fun and efficient, particularly the gentleman with glasses and a big smile (head waiter?). Bar service had a few hiccups, but evoked some sympathy for the young man who seemed to be rather stressed at times.

Would we chose the Excelsior Palace again? Undoubtedly - though the many stone steps down to the swimming pool might be a limiting factor at some point in the future!

This was probably a grand hotel at one time. However, it has not aged well. Our room was adequate, but only just. What we loved about it was the fabulous view out over the Ionian Sea and Mt. Etna, a view we never tired of. The hotel is also very conveniently located for comfortable walking into Taormina. One can walk the main thoroughfare without having to navigate any steep stairs, a real convenience for us older folk. The room itself lacked sufficient electrical outlets and needed better lighting. We had problems with the shower and the tub. The tub did not drain well unless we removed the stopper entirely, and it was impossible to shower without causing a mini flood over the bathroom floor. Getting in and out of the tub would be a real challenge for someone with limited mobility. We loved the beautiful gardens at the hotel, but sadly, the pool was closed for the season. We were travelling with a group and a number of group dinners had been arranged at the hotel. The food was somewhat abysmal, to say the least. Breakfasts were adequate but unvaried.

We stayed as a family of 3 for a week at the end of July, and have stayed previously at this hotel. It has been updated a little since our last visit 8 years ago but in general is a typical old style Italian hotel full of charm. Not for you if you want super modern luxury.

Personally it annoys me when paying for 3 people that we are put in a room which would usually be for 2, with an extra bed stuck in there. There wasn’t enough space for our things, my son lived out of his suitcase and I didn’t remove my clothes from the packing cubes I’d used.

The room was lovely and clean and always smelt lovely after being cleaned.

The air con is rubbish during the height of summer. We actually complained that it wasn’t working but it clearly is just not adequate. We had lovely views of Mount Etna from our room but had to keep the windows and shutters firmly shut all day to keep the heat out.

There is a mini bar in the room which we used to pop our own drinks in but again it’s not a great fridge.

Again personal choice but I didn’t like the breakfast although my husband and son did. The only hot choice was bacon and scrambled eggs. There was plenty of continental choice but I just can’t eat salad for breakfast!

The pool area is LOVELY. Beware of the steps to get there! Gorgeous views of the bay below, surrounded by trees providing much needed shade in the summer. Not sure if it’s the distance to the pool that stopped this but there is no reserving of sun beds! Wow!! We never struggled to get beds and the lifeguard was always on hand to move beds around should you need it.
Also beware of the bar prices at the pool. €6 for a Coke Zero! €12 for an Aperol Spritz. I also didn’t find the food choices at the pool that great, and not very impressive for the price.

Great location for bars and restaurants and we didn’t hear a single bit of noise from outside or other rooms at night.

All in all I would stay again, but not in Summer with that air con and the busyness of Taormina.

After searching for hours on various websites, we chose the Excelsior Palace Hotel because my husband thought he heard of it through friends. It could not have been better.

The location is excellent because it is at the entrance of the old town which means you have all the restaurants on your doorstep while also having space and sweeping views over the coastline and Mt Etna. Every evening we would have a drink before dinner, watching the sunset over Mt Etna, and on our last night we watched as red lava came flowing down the mountain. It was breathtaking.

The receptionists were great and they always provided good restaurant recommendations. They have a fabulous breakfast buffet in the morning, really good lunches in the restaurant near the pool, and a three course dinner menu that is delicious and well priced. On the weekends the hotel has a piano player which added to the calm and elegant atmosphere. The staff are incredible - very much an old world silver service you don’t find much anymore.

Another point about the location - the hotel is not far from the highway which is really good is you want to drive south to Syracuse or north to the islands.

I hope this review is helpful. Enjoy your time in Sicily!

This is really a gorgeous hotel with exceptional views everywhere. The breakfast buffet was arranged to minimize contact between food and guest. I thought it quite clever using food carts to serve each table, the waiters were fabulous. I love my room with a view and didn't have any problems.

Large imposing building with wonderful views.
Very traditional and a tad old fashioned.
Room pleasant and clean though shower not working effectively.
Disappointing to see no evidence of environmental touches ie. Still using individual shampoos, shower gels etc instead of refills.
Breakfast served in an entirely white room, used for weddings so felt very strange each morning. Breakfast selection good.
Freezer in the breakfast room contained sorbets but had the lid permanently open which in these energy, climate emergency times seemed very wasteful.
Just amazing to see House Martins flying all around in the evenings I hope their nests will be allowed to remain.
Very enjoyable live piano playing in the evenings.

This is a very beautiful and elegant hotel situated on the hill top of Taormina with stunning views across the bay to Mt Etna.
The location is absolutely perfect only minutes away from the delicious restaurants, wine bars and shops.
The interior decor of the hotel and rooms is exquisite and very much in keeping with the grandeur of the hotel. The facilities are great with a traditional bar, very reasonably priced and a restaurant serving great quality food. Breakfast has a very good selection of hot and cold food and drinks. The rooms have tea/coffee making facilities and a chargeable well stocked mini bar.
The staff are exceptionally helpful with brilliant local knowledge they really do deliver fantastic customer service.
The pool is spectacular, very tranquil and has a delightful bar serving drinks and food between 9am - 6pm. There are plenty of sun loungers and towels provided free of charge.
A massive thank you to all of the staff for making this a beautiful holiday and we can’t wait to revisit this amazing hotel.

This review extends earlier review to accommodate Trip Advisor word count limit.

Pool is lovely and situated in lovely gardens with spectacular views. There are plenty of sunbeds and towels. There is a poolside bar / restaurant. However, guest enjoyment of this wonderful pool and its facilities is significantly and badly impacted every day by the following:

Daily use of petrol driven leaf blower close to sunbeds and around bar / restaurant areas. Awful fumes and smell and extreme levels of noise and disruption. Operator wears ear defenders - what about the guests?!

Pool is closed daily at 1800. This is far too early i Summer but in any event staff effectively spoil guest enjoyment from about 1600 daily by noisily and intrusively preparing for the inevitable evening function, usually a wedding. This includes moving furniture, stringing lights, sweeping, vacuuming the pool, setting up flower stands, tables etc. There is loud conversation and discussion.

Service at the pool bar / restaurant is very slow, always. The pool areas are open to the public so privacy and peace and are very limited.

However lovely the pool and its setting, and it is, it is insufficient to permit any recommendation other than to avoid this hotel.

Transfer was included in our package (EasyJet holidays) but I am sure the hotel can arrange. The hotel does not lay on a shuttle to the beach but you can access hai the cable car (20 minutes walk) or taxi. To be honest, the pool is such an amazing location that the rather average beach may not be such a draw.
