It was an amazing stay at Claudios b&b! Really beautiful house with a wonderful garden and the cutest dog right next to the river. Very esthetic interior and furniture, a lot of it made from local wood. The best breakfast I've ever had, while staying somewhere away from home, made freshly by Claudio every morning. You could literally taste the hospitality! Great location while visiting florence, just a 25min bike ride away and you can cycle next to the tiver the whole time. Alternativly you can take the bus which stops just 1 min walk from the house. Claudio was really friendly to let us borrow some bikes and was always open for a nice chat. Huge recommendation to stay in this amazing place!!

Every detail of this place is amazing. The breakfast was incredible, made with so much love! The rooms felt like home and the pool was perfect for cooling off after a hot day exploring the city- which is easily done by a button close by. The host was kind and willing to help and answer any questions we had. Would highly recommend staying here for a slow, relaxing and nourishing time in florence. Thank you!

Claudio was so welcoming at La Martellina, and the place itself is beautiful. Clean and comfy rooms, gorgeous garden with a little pool for cooling off and access to the river. The breakfast was absolutely excellent and just a perfect experience of the relaxed Italian approach! We loved it here and would definitely return. It is a bus ride into Florence proper, but Claudio also gave good recommendations for more local food and drinks - ask about the pizza place up the road! 100% would recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing and chilled out way to visit Florence.

With 38°C outside this is such a perfect spot right next to the river, with always a nice breeze. The amazing breakfast was a great way for us to slowly start the day. After that we always went to the river. In the evenings we went to Firenze by bus or by car. We love Claudio as a host. Just ask him for advice and he will know what to say! 😁 We stayed in the tower room, beautiful.

The house is great and feels very welcoming!
It’s the perfect place to relax but it also has a good location if you want a place to stay when visiting Florence.
Amazing breakfast and loved to fall asleep whilst listening to the water stream in the river!
Would definitely recommend the tower room where unstated with my girlfriend!

First off before I explain my review let me explain that my husband and I are pretty laid back and nice people but we were so unimpressed with this place that we didn't even stay the next day for breakfast. We were totally excited to go to Florence to La Martellina and when we got there we were a little confused because it wasn't how we saw it in the pictures. It was at the end of a subdivision in a small town where in our opinion tourists were not welcomed. Claudio at first was nice and showed us our room but later he had friends over and they were not friendly to us tourists one bit and they were outside in the only area that we could really hang out in. We tried to go and hang out with everyone but Claudio came up to us and basically put that to a stop. So we had to go to our room and when we went to our room it smelled horrible with smoke in it from his friends smoking right below our window which by the way was the most expensive room in the whole place. We had to shut our windows and it was hot so our room was extremely warm. There were other Americans at the same Bed and Breakfast that said they got booted from hanging out and mingling with him and his friends as well. We would not be opposed to him having friends over but there was no where for us to hang out besides the area his friends were in. His yard is not very big or spacious. The problem is claudio had a private balcony for his use and instead he had his friends over and used the only table area outside that us renters could use. While I was in my room wanting to have a glass of wine outside and wanting to enjoy the Tuscany evening; instead I was listening to Claudio talk and laugh with his friends. I am not opposed to people having friends over but if you plan on doing that you should also accomodate the people that are paying to stay there plus not only Claudio but his friends helped make us feel really unwelcomed. It was a horrible experience expecially being so many miles away and being treated the way we were. I was so shocked because I had heard so many great reviews that I thought there was no way this place could be horrible but I was wrong. I now never want to go back to Florence due to the experience I had at La Martellina. Plus I am not so sure what everyone is raving about in the reviews with the Breakfast. You get lunch meat and cheese from a deli, one hard boiled egg, some friut, bread, and vegetables. It to me was not anything special. I was really bummed and upset with my experience and hope this reviews helps others out with finding a good bed and breakfast. Real quick tip: If you plan on going to eat dinner at any of the restaurants there are certain hours they are open. Like majority close at around 2:00pm and re-open at around 7:30pm.. Hope this review was beneficial.

Response from Martellina, Proprietario at Bed and Breakfast La Martellina
Responded 24 Jul 2011
I was very sad reading this review, since my B&B (and Florence) does not deserve it. The garden (large 1500 sqmts) is of common use, and everybody can use at ease. That means that it gives the opportunity to mix different cultures (which in my opinion is a good reason to travel) and ideas. I always invite my guests at our desk and I am happy when they join us. In any case, in my garden there are several tables where sit and get privacy if desired. My friends were smoking in the open air and even if I am not a smoker and think it is a very bad vice (it is strictly forbidden to smoke inside) I have the tolerance to make my friends feel at ease. That night, after your complains, I told them to immediately stop smoking in the nearby of the window of the room in the first floor you staid in. And they did. I am very sorry for the opinion about the breakfast: I serve it with love and try to satisfy all desires of my guests (I also serve breakfasts for celiacs and any other food intolerances, and any particular need and desire is welcomed). As regarding the opening hours of restaurants in Italy the habit is having lunch within 3 pm and dinner from 7.30 pm. But nobody starves! You can find lots of places (bars, pubs, stalls, tavole calde, etc) where have sandwiches, pizzas, salads, and so on with cold and hot dishes... at any time.

We spent four nights at La Martellina in July 2011. We had a wonderful time with Claudio (as well as Emilio, Tiger and Cat, Claudio's furry friends). Everything was better than advertised. It was nice to stay in the village of Girone (a 15-20 minute city bus ride from central Florence), away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There is a wonderful restaurant near the B&B called Antica Girone (try the filetto Orlof) Every morning (not too early), Claudio prepared a delicious breakfast spread. Claudio and his friends invited us to join in celebrating Claudio's birthday (we won't say which one :) , with homemade pizza, made in Claudio's outdoor wood fired oven. We definitely felt at home. Claudio was a wealth of information, and knew the best places to see and eat. It was a very special trip, and we definitely will stay there upon our return to Florence. After reading the reviews on this website I was stoked to have the opportunity to go to this B&B. I thought it was going to be the highlight of my trip to Florence. But what I found what quite the opposite. The surroundings were beautiful yes but the actual accomodations less than satisfying. The host, Claudio did nothing to make us feel at home. We wanted to use the internet and felt uncomfortable getting in and out of his room marked "private". We wanted to go out to eat for lunch and there were no places in town to eat and he didn't even suggest making us lunch there so we had to trek back into town. The accomodations were satisfactory, the bedding seemed a little dirty and the bathroom smelled like dead pine trees. I would suggest going else such as Signoria Di Firenze in the heart of Florence, that hotel is excellent!!!!!!!!

Let me start by saying me and boyfriend don't usually write reviews- we're pretty laid back and friendly.

The B&B itself is beautiful! The room was clean but hot and rubbish aircon. We had to share a bathroom (shower was bad) which I wasn't aware of but fine. But the host, Claudio, was rude, unapologetic and disinterested. He made us feel very unwelcome and was extremely smug and unhelpful about everything. The cleaner also yelled for us to get out the room 2 hours before check out. The location is also terrible - the bus is infrequent, late and long and crowded. The bike journey is nicer! The dog was probably the only thing the made our stay nice! The breakfast was good not great. The b&b had great potential, shame the owner is so terrible at hospitality. If you don't like strangers in your house - don't run a b&b.

I am very thankful that La Martellina is a B&B, and not some bar or restaurant or pub! My stay was wonderful and I had the best of both worlds - the city and the countryside. What's a Tuscany trip without the countryside, anyway! I look forward to having an early evening rest and slow morning start everyday, cos La Martellina was indeed home away from home. It is clean and Claudio and Emilio are very friendly pals. There's a restaurant nearby, recommended by Claudio, that serves great food with excellent service.

La Martellina is perfect for those who want to slow down their pace. However, if you only have one day for Florence, a place near the churches might be a better choice for you.

I would love to return to La Martellina for a honeymoon stay (hopefully soon).
