Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our check in was at 3pm. We arrived to the hotel at 3:40, with no one at the reception desk. We waited another 15 minutes before someone got there to check us in, and give us the key to our room. That's fine. I know it's Italy, things move slow. Including the drivers on the highways, so keep that in mind if driving through Tuscany. We got to our room, the handle fell off when we were trying to get into our room. I went downstairs, to tell the front desk, perhaps to get another room, and they told me to open the door with the key, and not use the handle. Ok, fine. ... Though I wondered about the security of our room when we left for the day. The bed was the worst bed I've slept on, the pillows were not any better, more like a pice of foam in a pillow case. The mattress was wrapped in a plastic cover, so it was impossible to get comfortable and not sweat the entire night. I get it, it's a fancy looking Italian hotel from the outside so you might be tempted, also the second most expensive in Livorno. The location isn't close to any beach you want to lay on, and there's a Naval base across the street blocking your access to the ocean. Our room was not worth the €143 a night. If you're booking this through Booking.com, the breakfast is not included like they say it is. The front desk staff will tell you it's not included, and then charge you €10 for a single cappuccino and pastry for breakfast.

Nice old hotel, staff very nice and helpful. We stayed here for 2 days before taking the ferry and used the hotel as a starting point for trips into toscana. Rooms are good. AC is working, road is slightly loud but manageable with windows closed. Bus stop nearby is very convenient to get to city center. We would stay here again for nights before ferry and similar. Btw there was only a reduced breakfast due to Covid - but we did not try it.

Would you sometimes want -- just for fun -- to feel presidential? To have your supper on an artistically illuminated, huge facade balcony of an Art Deco building, with the flags of EU, Italy and Livorno fluttering in the wind and the scents of the sea and the trees from the alley mixed in the breeze? Then room #15 in Hotel Gennarino would be your best choice. The room is for four people but -- even if you come on your own or as a couple -- it's worth picking it. Particularly taking into account that this unique, authentic, elegantly decorated, sparkling clean and lovingly kept hotel with friendly, gracious hosts and a various, delicious breakfast is very reasonably priced. It was an unforgettable experience!

On June 23, 2019, my wife and I arrived at 2pm by auto at Hotel Gennarino with reservations made through Travelocity. We were shown to our room which was nice but extremely hot and was told that the air conditioning would take a little while to cool it down. At that time Italy was going through a heat streak and the temperatures were over 100F. Their AC was broken because it never did cool the room down. When we complained to the desk a lady offered to show us another room where the AC had recently been on. We could tell no difference between the temperatures of the rooms. Obviously, the building’s AC was not working properly. We told her we could not possibly stay there in that kind of heat and we would have to find other accommodations with air conditioning elsewhere. As we departed she told us she was sorry for our inconvenience but not to worry because she would cancel our reservation at the Hotel Gennarino and not charge our credit card and/or refund our money back on to our credit card if it had already been charged. Our latest credit card statement confirms what she said was untrue because we were charged on June 24, 2019, for a room we never stayed in. To avoid getting my credit card company involved on July 29th I emailed the hotel directly and explained what happened and asked that they refund the amount they charged back to my card. No response. Now, the credit card company has become involved. Why make me go through this hassle when we never stayed there? It is not like they are a huge hotel only twenty-some rooms. Maybe they need the money… Judging from some of the reviews the AC has been broken for quite some time.

Gennarino is a classic hotel close to the Navy Accademy. I've come back after years and I have found teh traditional quality. The room was clean and the TV had the sky channels. The medium quality breakfast, the staff is kind.

The location is great - within walking distance of the beach and many restaurants. The hotel is old and if you are from the States the air conditioning never really gets cold. The bus stop is a 2 minute walk - be prepared to have exact change. The breakfast was bountiful, but heavy on the carbs.

Absolutely loved this small hotel in a gorgeous, beautifully restored architectural gem. It looks like a castle from the outside. Staff was pleasant and efficient, room nice, and breakfast typical for Italy. Best of all, the front desk recommended a local restaurant for dinner which was one of the best Italian meals we have ever had. Hotel is right on the bus line from center city and also conveniently runs to the train station. A warning hiwever...you cannot always buy bus tickets on the bus but they are for sale at tabacs.

In a building of the early 20th century along the Aurelia State Road in front of the Naval Academy, the hotel offers private outdoor parking and spacious and clean rooms. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was dingy and abundant. I still consider it for another weekend.

Interesting building, decent breakfast (for Italy). Bathroom fine, plenty of hot water. Bedroom itself a bit basic: glass-topped table with big notices underneath, small telly mounted up too high. Bedding didn't live up it's claims. Bed firm but okay. Windows which open wide (hurray!) to let in the cool outside air. No aircon, so may get warm in the summer. Staff friendly. Excellent wifi - could even upload a 2GB video in reasonable time.
