We have been visiting Tuscany and Lucca periodically for a number of years but I was surprised to see our first review of La Romea was nearly 12 years ago. We last visited Lucca in October 2019 to have a few days of rest and relaxation after a particularly hectic schedule at home.

Gaia and Giulio continue to provide an excellent service. Our favourite room is the Ivory room although we have also stayed in the Blue, Peach and aquamarine rooms. Breakfasts are of a high standard and are better than some of the more expensive hotels we have stayed in different parts of Italy. I like my coffee strong and Gaia serves up the best coffee I have tasted in our various holiday to a fascinating country.

We have never visited La Romea and left with the impression that standards were slipping which could so easily happen particularly after a number of years.

A home from home.

Dear guests, you made me move... your kind words are to us so important after 19 years since we opened La Romea! You know very well that we completely made it, with all our heart and passion, renovating the first floor of this medieval building in the heart of Lucca .Time flies... if I think about me and my wonderful husband Giulio starting the work on 2000 and we opened on February 2001... Just to say how we appreciated your message and your friendship! grazie, grazie, grazie Gaia e Giulio

We stayed here for two nights last August and would definitely stay here again when visiting Lucca. The hosts are very nice, breakfast was perfectly taken care of and the rooms are comfortable, big and nicely decorated. Bathroom was also very comfortable. The hosts also gave us some very nice recommendations for acitivies and lunch/dinner. Also very good price/quality ratio. Would 100% recommend this place!

We loved La Romea for its location inside the old walls of Lucca and being on the second floor of a very old and beautiful palazzo. But Gaia takes the cake, she is the most wonderful hostess we have ever encountered, and we travel a lot. Will definitely be back and if you get a chance, go stay at La Romea!! <3

Giulio (the owner) is great and very helpful. He picks you up from the gate. They can arrange for parking as well.

The location is right behind the main shopping street (and as with everything, you're never more than a few blocks away from other points of interests).

Get the Ivory room or one of the other bigger ones (the green room is a bit too small).

Breakfast is excellent. Especially the bruschetta with fresh homegrown tomatoes.

P.S. Make sure to rent a bike!

We stayed in the blue suite. It was my husband, myself, and our twenty three month old. The owners were very kind. They arranged for our transportation from the airport to the B&B. Someone was waiting for us at the airport when we arrived. La Romea is in a beautiful building. We were not disappointed with our room! We could smell how clean it was when we opened the door. It was immaculate. They had a baby bed ready for us, and they even had a little horse for our daughter to ride around on in the room. The bathroom was fabulous! I've never stayed somewhere and taken photos of the bathroom, but I did here! Our little daughter loves Cinderella, and she felt like a princess in the bath!!! The room was large and she had plenty of space to play and ride a horse!!! The breakfast was very good. The owners let us leave our baggage for a while after we checked out so we could sightsee. He even called us a taxi later. The only fault we could find is that the mattress sunk in the middle when you laid on it! However, that wouldn't stop us from going back again. The service was better than a five star hotel. The owners were very kind, and we would reccomend the B&B to anyone! Lucca was great! We rented bicycles. The baby loved being on the back of a bike! And you must try some pistachio gelato!!!

My family and I stayed at La Romea in October of 2005.
This B&B in a historical building(no elevator) is smack dab in the middle of the beautiful walled city of Lucca, Italy.
The owners, Guilio & Gaia are the sweetest couple we encountered in Italy, and we were travelling for a month
there. They were so helpful with anything you wanted or needed. They had great tips for things to see and places to eat. We asked for extra pillows and they were piled up on our bed when we returned from sightseeing. We stayed in the Blue Suite, and it was gorgeous with a double bed and a single for our 18 year old son. The spa bathroom was my favorite in Italy. The views from the large windows was great. They serve, with the help of Gaia's mom, a nice breakfast in the communal family room which all the rooms circle around. Mom will make you any kind of eggs you want, while there is a great supply of fruit, yogurt, cereal, sweet cakes, prosciutto, juices and lots of coffee. My son always slept past the 11:00 deadline (longest breakfast hours we had in Italy), so mom would tell us to pile up a plate of everything to put in our room and fridge for sleeping beauty when he awoke. I loved her concern for him. An Italian mom and her son is a special relationship in Italy. Staying here made us feel more like locals than at a hotel. Lucca is a charming city that should be experienced when all the tourists leave, so please spend a few nights in this great walled city.

This gem of a B&B is located in the heart of Lucca - a GREAT homebase for northern Tuscany (Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terre, Siena, San Gimignano). The hosts are exceptional and the rooms are the most ornate and cozy we had in all of Italy. All of comforts of home. Our rooms were so spacious and finally a shower I can fit in without doing yoga!Breakfast was so large each day - breads, fruit, deli meats and cheeses, juices, coffee, yogurt, more breads, and eggs cooked to your liking. We were there on Easter and the family welcomed us in as one of their own, making special Easter breakfast yet also respecting our tourist time and helping us get to where we needed to go by calling rental cars, train times, etc. What a fabulous, special place. Truly one of the highlights of our visit to Italy. (and only a 5-10 min. FLAT walk to the train station)We were there in April 2004.

We visited La Romea in November 2005 and spent a long weekend there. We received a warm welcome from Giulio and Gaia and were made to feel truly at home. We had two rooms - the Suite and the Yellow Room. Both of these rooms were very large and airy with high ceilings, very comfortable and well furnished with a high standard of cleanliness. They did appear a little dark but I think this is simply because the ancient buildings are all so close to each other that it is sometimes difficult for much light to filter through. However, it was no problem at all and there were certainly lots of lights available - even candles around the bath! The sitting room was very large and comfortable and so nice to sit in and have a drink with other guests if you all felt like it. Breakfasts were good - fresh fruit and tomatoes, excellent coffee, fresh bread and pastries. Our hosts did all they could to help, recommending restaurants, walks and places to visit. We very much enjoyed having aperitivos at about 6.30 and found that the bars seemed to vye with each other in supplying the best little canapes to tempt you to drink more! Although all of the restaurants we tried were good, we did find that our favourites tended to be the Osterias where the food was delicious, local and a reasonable price. There was also a wonderful chocolate shop in Via Fillungo with a nice bar and really pleasant staff. Like the previous reviewer, we will definately return to Lucca to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, the Puccini concerts, the excellent food and the charm of La Romea!

La Romea was one of the top highlights of our honeymoon! It is not only located in the center of Lucca, our hosts Giulio and Gaia were simply outstanding in their graciousness, and in making us feel at home. Artistically appointed rooms. Romantic. Phenomenal breakfasts, including the offer of eggs every morning (never happens in Italy!). Giulio helped us with everything from parking, rental car return, finding a spa, and even hauled all our luggage up the stairs. Beds were extremely comfortable, with nice linens. We had a wonderful evening with another couple we met staying there, sipping wine in the main living room, which features beautiful wall length windows, with flower boxes, that open out onto the winding roads overlooking the heart of Lucca. It was so nice to be able to wander around Lucca, and then pop up for a midday break at this wonderful, romantic little retreat.

Thoroughly agree with the previous comments. A couple of tips:

- The difference in the size and comfort of the rooms is bigger than the difference in price. I would recommend looking at the La Romea web site before deciding.

- If arriving by plane at Pisa and going on by taxi, ask the hotel to arrange it. It's cheaper, and you'll get a driver who knows his way around the maze of narrow streets in Lucca town center.
