I stayed here for a few nights and it was quite pleasant. One thing to say is that the internet was a bit annoying and it has problem connecting sometimes. The staff were nice, and helpful. The hotel room was clean and looked great. There was a bathtub and the bathroom had things like soap, creams, etc. I had heard that it was a very good hotel, so I was expecting it to be a bit more fancy but it wasn’t soo bad.

First the good things. It is across the street, in front of the train station at Bern. It was perfect for us as we were planning to (and did) go to a different city every day. They also gave us a voucher so we could use all Bern public transportation during our stay. I dont know if it is a standard in Bern, but it was welcomed.

On the other hand, dont expect the hotel to be a luxury or modern one. The hotel is simple, to put it nicely. At some hours, during the day, the entrance had a bad smell. We did not book the breakfast, but, when we checked it, it turned out to be a wise decision. Room heating can only be controlled by opening windows. Pluggin laptops, phones and other things that needed charging was an exercise in logistics. The people at the front desk were all over the spectrum. The lady who received us was incredibly nice. That was it. Everybody else at the desk seemed to dislike their job and were more than willing to let you feel it.

Very old hotel. No usb outlet . Have kettle with coffee and tea. Room door manual lock with key and a very big heavy key chain. Upside is the location just opposite the banhof. Room is spacious, can open up two 27” luggage. The staff is helpful..

if you want to visit Bern, this hotel is a perfect place to start your journey. It's located right in the center of Bern, near the main bus/train stations. Don't expect luxury furniture, but a clean hotel ! It definitely deserves his price, considering Switzerland is the most expensive country in Europe.

Very Terrible night. We are just staying for a night, and overall is so so disappointed.

Good Thing:
1) easy to find. Just opposite Train Station.

Bad Thing:
1) Staff abit rude
2) Breakfast is so so so so terrible. We are not asking for a 5 stars hotel service. But at least eggs or bacon are very simple breakfast. Nope!! They only provide a few breads and hams. That’s it. Paying around CHY25 per person, eating this?..
3) the bed is not comfortable as well.

This hotel was well placed opposite the main train station and close the the Bahnhofplatz bus and tram stops. The rooms were small and were not as they were depicted on the website. Breakfast was not included and the breakfast offered was extremely expensive for what you got. We went elsewhere for breakfast. Overall the rooms were comfortable and clean and the staff friendly enough but we were a little disappointed in this hotel.

City hotel is opposite the main railway station, the other side of the bus and tram stop. So it was ideally located as we came off the train from Basel.

Hotel entrance is in a row of shops. Reception is on ground floor. They speak several languages. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful

Our two-bedded room 309 was on 3rd floor and our friend had a single room on 6th floor in the loft. Our room had combined bath and toilet, with washbasin outside. It was separated from bedroom area by an opaque glass screen. There was a single switch for the two lights over bath and washbasin. Not ideal during the night as it lit up the bedroom when you used the toilet.

The beds were low down but were reasonably comfortable. There was an armchair and chair so we did not need to sit on bed. The room had a rather austere feel about it.

There was limited clothes hanging space.

Breakfast room was on first floor but it cost CHF 20 so we chose to eat a bit cheaper in Titbits in railway station where quality of produce was high.

We paid CHF 135 per night for the double room and 115 for the single room.

The plus points of the hotel were its location and the friendly receptionist.

My wife and I stayed here in July of 2005 - it was clean and quiet if a bit spartan, but had all the essentials. It was a one minute walk from the train station. If you are looking for a good base from which to travel by train to surrounding areas, it is just fine. The breakfast was included for us - bread, jams, yogurt, cereal, fruit. Nothing spectacular but since it was included we ate it. The front desk staff were exceedingly pleasant and helped us with questions about taking the tram etc.... This is not a resort hotel and you wouldn't stay there for that. But if you want a great central location for travel around Switzerland by train, you can't beat Berne, and City Am a good spot for couples or singles.

We chose this hotel because of its generally favorable reviews on this forum and proximity to the Bern train station. If you are traveling by train and are looking for a reasonably priced hotel, then we highly recommend it. Switzerland is an expensive country, so we feel that the quality of the hotel was an excellent deal at the price we paid. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the location can't be beat if you're traveling by train. The breakfast was fine but nothing special. Standard continental fare.

We spent one day in Bern, and we're glad we did. The city center (where all the tourists are) is a modern city, built on medieval foundations. That's reflected in the architecture, cobblestone streets, and interesting water fountain sculptures positioned all along the main street. We recommend seeing the clock tower (the demonstration is at 4 minutes before each hour) and the multimedia show about Bern's history, in the visitors center adjacent to the bear pits. The Einstein exhibit will be at the Natural History museum until October (2006), and that was interesting too. We were disappointed not to see Parliament, as it was shrouded due to renovations (and closed on Sunday, the day we were there). We traveled to Bern from Interlaken, so we stopped in Thun along the way and visited the Castle there, which was also interesting.

The restaurant "Tidbits" in the train station was a good value. They have a buffet (no meat) that we enjoyed and at a reasonable price. Excellent sald bar.

In the context of the price category of the hotel and proximity to the train station, I rank City Am Bahnhof very highly.

The name of the hotel is a little confusing. On the internet, is Hotel City Am-Banhorf however when I got to this hotel, it was Hotel City. I was not sure if this is the right hotel until the reception told me it is the right one.

This hotel has the best location. It is right opposite Bern train station. Most of the tram stations are around that area. Although it is a little expensive but the location was fantastic!

The entrance is unique – you will walk through a “bridge” over a water pond into the hotel property. The reception area is not big but the staff was helpful. She gave me all the tourist information I needed. There is a computer by the reception for guest use however they do charge for internet. The wifi service in the hotel is not free and the charge was a little high. There is no breakfast included in the room rate.

The room was huge comparing with most of the hotel in Europe. It doesn’t look like a room for a single use. It can easily fit 2 adults without a problem. There was a clean and comfortable queen bed, big working desk and a heater below it, a closet and a small TV on the wall.

My favorite is the bathroom. It was clean and big with a bathtub. Amenities are more then enough.

The room has a good view of the train station.
