Located only 5 (or so) km from the downtown of Lucerne, on a green and pictoresque hillside, the hotel residing in a little district of Sonnmatt resembles a picture from a vintage film, kind of a castle looking at the great lake of Lucerne, the Pilatus and Rigi mountains, and far, far away. If you are lucky enough to get a panorama room like we did, you could enjoy dawns and sunsets - if you don't come too late from the outside. Be prepared to ring the bell if you return after 9:00 PM, as the hotel preserves calmness of many senior people that live in it. They are clearly the majority of inhabitants there, as "kurhotel" stands for "hotel-sanatorium" afaik. Yep, it was the RIGHT place for us. Very calm at night, still easily accessible from the city. The only problem is that the restaurant closes early enough, too, and you can get only some snacks afterwords. If you are late for the kitchen, order a glass of milk at the bar: one of the reasons why you should visit Switzerland, and there are many in fact, is milk. Working hours aside, the hotel restaurant is very good, its international staff being very friendly, polite and helpful. Nice people! The rest of the hotel staff is just the same. The majority of them speak English, but not all. We didn't try any medical procedures (we're not sure if they are available to tourists), but visited the spa facility regularly. It is not perfect (we happened to visit a few better facilities in Switzerland), but ok. Be prepared for swimsuits being prohibited while visiting saunas or hammam there. During our stay at the Sonnmatt we got a car to travel through Switzerland. Alternatively, you may hike around the place along numerous wonderwegs (hiking trails) leading to different places across beautiful hills, woods and pastures. Sometimes it is hard to believe that you are still in the town... or already not? If you go on foot from the city, you'll be following calm and green streets climbing up the hill. If you are lazying and do not use your feet or a car, there's a shuttle traveling from the hotel to the city center and back again with the famous Swiss punctuality. Did I forget something? Oh, yes! If you come to Sonnmatt in early June, you can enjoy frog wedding songs coming loudly from a little pond just in front of the reception, like we did! To summarize, we definitely loved our stay. Sonnmatt is clearly not a place for the people who prefer nightlife or clubbing, but that's ok for us... And, still, wi-fi in the room was ok, too.

Dear Nicholas1964 Thank you very much for your lovely description of the Hotel Sonnmatt and your stay here. You summarized very beautifully and benevolently the landscape and nature around the Sonnmatt, the staff and your experience here – our brochures can’t compete with the picture you made. Thank you! Since the majority of our guests are aged, we are very pleased to hear that also younger guests and guests that do not need any medical assistance enjoy our hotel. Our restaurant closes at 20.30 p.m. which is admittedly quite early. But so far it was late enough for the majority of our guests. The wellness area with its indoor pool, the sauna and steam-bath is not big and not as generous as in wellness hotels. But the view from the gym onto the mountain panorama is unique. It would be our pleasure to welcome you again at the Sonnmatt. Anna Suter, Administration

This hotel although not necessarily what I had imagined it to be was a really love place. It was out of the tourist centre of Luzern and they provide a complementary bus which runs during the day (is always a bonus) to the station with a few stops between.

From the hotel, like most other places in Luzern you have very impressive views of the distant mountain range. Outside the hotel are a couple of hiking trails of different difficulty level which is a lovely lovely way of taking in the scenic environment. I had a very comfortable stay here, the staff I had an interaction with seemed cheerful and willing to help.

The hotel is very clean and tidy with a beautiful view. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
However if we'd known that the hotel specialises in guests over 70 ( actually I reckon most were over 80) we wouldn't have booked. Note to self .. read the small print on Booking.com! The pool seemed more geared to physiotherapy than swimming. A fair few wheelchairs and zimmers frames dotted around.

The extremely positive reviews I read here are suspiciously over the top. The place is nice, but it is very much like a rehabilitation center for seniors. The rooms are clean, well enough furnished, and mine had a nice view (albeit over an adjoining roof) to the lake and nearby Alps. The breakfast buffet was fine and well-stocked and the service was friendly. It was just odd having a lot of elderly and slightly out-of-it people also having breakfast nearby and vacantly hanging out in the lobby and other areas. Not very "vacationy" feeling. There were nice walking trails nearby. While I don't have substantial complaints - it was clean, quiet, well-staffed and had free parking, if I were to do it again, I would have found something closer to central Lucerne where I could have explored more.

My wife and I stayed in this place for 2 nights in May 2016. Our first impression was that this was a health resort or rehab centre for the elderly. You can feel hospital smell in the corridor and most staff here dress like a nurse. I didn't feel very comfortable to stay in a medical institution for my holiday in Lucerne. The hotel claimed itself as 4 star but there is no hot water kettle in the room. When we asked for hot water, they gave us a jug which was full of coffee smell.

But anyway, the bed is very comfortable and the room is clean. Breakfast here is very good with hot boiled egg, ham, cheese, fruit, etc. The view from the hotel is also very good and the hotel offers free parking.

Where do I start about Sonnmatt. This is one of those few hotels which is actually even more beautiful and outstanding then the pictures posted here. Me and my husband stayed at Sonnmatt for a week when traveling for our first anniversary. The staff was extremely helpful, they even arranged for a HDMI cable for us so that we can watch movies with our computer. The hotel is extremely clean and has all amenities possible. An indoor pool, a jacuzi, sauna and massages by expert masseurs. It is a big property and very well taken care of. It is slightly away from the town centre, but daily shuttle to and from the hotel is arranged (no extra charge) by the hotel. There is free parking available on site. The breakfast is hearty and fresh. You can take a leisurely walk in the grounds and enjoy breathtaking views. The staff is very polite and very caring. It is the perfect spot for unwinding and relaxng. Highly recommended (Y)

This hotel is in a remarkable setting providing hiking in lush green hills with amazing views of the lake. It is peaceful and quieting to those of us who are in Switzerland to get out of the rat race. The rooms are spacious and luxurious and the staff extremely attentive. It is tended like a beautiful garden. If you are senior phobic, it may not be your cup of tea. Those of us who welcome the spa-like surroundings find that the older folks fit right in to a slower pace. Jump in and out of Lucerne with your car or their transport and enjoy coming back to paradise. Tip: in good weather, take your breakfast out on the deck and enjoy your own private dining.

This property is above the fray of Lucerne, and the view is wonderful. The breakfast is simple and well prepared. Your coffee or tea is served with white gloves, I don't see this at every hotel. They even provide transportation from the Bahnhoff at 40 minutes past the hour.

My husband and I stayed at Kurhotel Sonnmatt at Lucerne for 1 day.

It was the most beautiful hotel with extraordinary service and breathtaking view of Swiss Alps and the Lucerne lake right from their gardens.

The hotel is situated in outskirts but is very well connected by public transport.
We travelled by bus to the nearest stop. There is little hike and about 500 m walk on a ascent road till you reach the hotel.

Be mindful of you have lot of luggage, we just had 2 small bags so there was no problem. And we checked in to the hotel after a tiring day with nowhere else to go, so it suited perfectly well.

If you're are looking for some quiet time with a wonderful service, don't miss.

The food in their restaurant is really delicious.. especially desserts.

Also, it's tad expensive.. please check before booking.
