Detailed Reviews
In a group of 23 with Road Scholar, we were scheduled for 3 nights. On the second night at least 9 of the group tested positive for Covid. Those folks could not continue on the tour but were allowed to stay in the hotel. The hotel must be commended for the safe and excellent care. First day they placed breakfast outside the door, other days we could go down and bring choices back to room. No maid service but clean towels were provided. We could pick up an evening meal at the desk, without meeting other Covid carriers. The hotel had obviously been through this before and were careful and kind.
My wife and I were negative but elected to not continue with the "Covid tour." As the tour ended in 4 days, at least 11 stayed at the hotel for 3 more nights before departing for Zurich Airport and home to the US. We all had to pay for the room and meals by ourselves as Road Scholar abandoned us.
It is a lovely hotel with a great location, but they do not have air conditioning and the temperature was 85-90 degrees making sleeping very unpleasant.

I stayed at the Geranio with my two young sons for a (very warm) couple of days. We had a really lovely time.
The hotel is about 5 minutes walk from Locarno station, and is about a 10 minute walk from the Piazza Grande in the town centre. There is 2 hour parking outside the hotel, and longer 4 hour parking spaces a few minutes up the road. However spaces could be hard to find at busy points.
The hotel has a deal with the nearby multi storey car park opposite the station - you pay 14F for 24 hours.
The reception staff were so helpful, full of ideas of where to go on days out. Guests also get free local transport under a local Canton scheme to cut congestion - so we caught a bus to Ascona to enjoy a walk through its historic centre.
The room was fine. Without air conditioning it could get very warm in the evening, however it was pleasant to sit outside on the balcony. The children slept on a sofa bed.
Breakfast was a good choice of cereals, bread and ham/cheese. There is also coffee available at any time, which was a nice touch.
I would definitely recommend Hotel Getanio, we enjoyed our stay.

We stayed in Locarno for three nights and picked the hotel due to its central location close to the railway station as we were dependent on public transportation for our day trips into the valleys. Our room had a beautiful view onto the lake and was very spacious for Swiss standards. Furnishing is simple and minimal but had everything we needed for our stay. There is also free wifi in the room (you receive a code at reception). The hotel is close to several lakeside restaurants and a few minutes walk to the old town and Piazza Grande. The breakfast room also has a great view onto the lake and the breakfast buffet was constantly replenished. I would stay here again.

Unbelievable !!!! No internet wifi connection in the rooms! I tried to change 4 times in 4 floors and no wifi available! The breakfast was decent and the view very nice. The manager didn't help with the internet problem and was very rude with me and my wife when we said that the hotel couldn't sell a room without internet and charge for it!!!

Staying at Hotel Geranio was one of the highlights of my two-week trip to Italy and Switzerland. The hotel rooms are sparkling clean, with generous towels and lovely toiletries, and a cute little balcony. The room is small, but there are a desk and a place for luggage, and also a good reading light on the bedside table, as well as a place to hang clothes. Also, a big assortment of coffee and tea is available day and night, and a bag of delicious biscotti are in the room when you arrive, so each night before bed, I had a cup of ginger lemon tea and some biscotti as I remembered the day with its many delights (the camellia festival! and the chair lift to Mt. Cimetta that was one of the most beautiful peak experiences I have ever had). The breakfasts are wonderful, with hardboiled eggs and ones you can boil yourself, along with meats, a wide selection of cheese and many kinds of delicious breads, yogurt, and fruit. Wifi worked perfectly in the room.
So a 5-star review is easy to give, but I would really like to add another 5 stars for the wonderful help the staff gave me when I left my cell phone at the railway station. The woman at the desk called my phone, a man at the train station answered, and I picked up the phone moments later. However, in tearing the bed apart to look for the phone, I knocked my prescription sunglasses into the bedding and didn't see them as I was leaving. By the time I realized they were missing, we were on a train to Zurich. I emailed the hotel, they replied very quickly to let me know the glasses had been found, they mailed them to me promptly, and I so appreciated their kind attitude and efficiency. I certainly intend to stay there the next time I am at Lake Maggiore, although I hope I am not remembered as the ditzy woman who couldn't keep track of anything!
Note: The hotel is convenient to several parks, the cable cars to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso, the chairlift that continues up the mountain to the top of Mt. Cimetta, and the Termali Salini and Spa, all within walking distance.
Fall in love with Locarno at the Hotel Geranio!

The hotel was in a great location – across from Lake Maggiore. It is within walking distance from Piazza Grande Locarno and the funicular to Sasso di Madonna. Nice walking area along the lake. We were lucky enough to park overnight, across the street from hotel; otherwise, I believe there is a pay parking garage nearby. It was rather hot when we were there, so the room was very hot. No air conditioning, which is common in Europe. Room was a little outdated, but very clean. Breakfast was very good and it was gorgeous sitting on the balcony to eat. Front desk employees were very nice and helpful.

We stayed here for five nights in August 2018 - Room 312. The room had a huge balcony/terrace.
There was plenty of storage space (and safe) – including a large cabinet in the bathroom.
On the first night one of the beds squeaked loudly – but this was fixed (strangely) by moving the bed a few inches away from the wall.
Breakfast (included in the rate) was the usual Continental Fare, but the variety was a tad limited. On one day they ran out of bread & croissants which took a long time to replenish. (We think they had to defrost it). There were no hot options – apart from an egg boiling machine – but keep an eye out for young kids pinching your egg!
The hotel does provide (free) coffee making machines on the second floor. (There are no facilities in the room.)
There is an entrance/exit on the second floor which goes out close to the Tourist Information Office & the station. (you need your room key to gain entrance.) There is a small supermarket next to the station.
The one “downside” for the hotel is the lack of parking. There are spaces immediately outside the hotel – but these are limited to a max of 2 hours between 7 am & 7 pm. About 50 yards up the road the limit is four hours. The solution is to use the multi-story carpark near the station – you can buy a ticket from the hotel to cover the period you want and you can go in and out all day. You have to pay the receptionist cash for the ticket, because it is a separate arrangement to the hotel (hence you can’t use the hotel credit card machine.) It costed us 42 Swiss Francs for three days. The car park is about ten minutes walk from the hotel – turn left as you approach the Wild West Restaurant.
All the staff, especially all the Receptionists were extremely helpful.
We found the Restaurants close to the hotel on the expensive side. We would recommend the Tegola restaurant (turn left from the hotel and about 10 minutes walk along the promenade) we ate there three times during our stay – excellent Italian food.
The hotel is convenient for the Ferries, Trains & funicular.

I discovered the hotel fifteen years ago when I was a student and not so much money in the pocket. It was a very sunny January day when I got out the railway station in Locarno, went down the street and fell in love with the lake side and the promenade along it. Palm trees, red banks, beautiful flowers and... red geraniums! I felt a bit desperate then because I looked around and never imagined I could find exactly on this wonderful spot an affordable hotel. I saw the building with the name "Geranio" on it, entered, talked to an extraordinary friendly person at the reception, got a super rate and a fantastic room overlooking the lake for the whole week! Since then, nothing changed, except that they renovated all rooms (everything is simple, extremely clean and comfortable). The breakfast room is overlooking the lake and very good for an Italian style breakfast, mainly because lots of Swiss German and German people have elected Locarno as their holiday destination, so the breakfast is adapted to more Northern European taste. Like in the best fitness centers, it's possible to exercise looking at the splendid view on the lake and the people doing their passegiata beneath. A nice living room is also available for the (very rare) rainy days in Locarno. I still wonder after so many years how they manage to have such a nice, friendly and uncomplicated staff. Everything is always possible and going later or earlier never a problem. Looking from a room balcony at the lake, the palm trees and some steam boats going in and out is still very special for me. No doubt I had fond memories of Locarno during my first stay because of the nice travel experience I got in this hotel. Over the years and almost astonishingly, this special bond between this particular spot in Locarno and me never faded. Meanwhile, we could afford more fashionable and posh hotels in the nearby village of Ascona, but we never do. I'm enchanted by Geranio au Lac as when I first discovered it many years ago. It's even better now because of the wonderful coffee shop "Al Porto" which opened just next door. Not to be missed either.

went here for two nights during a festival. very pricey, but suppose that's the way it is during the event season. I had the impression we'd booked a 3-star,only to find it has one star less upon arrival. literally stone's throw from train station. very sweet lady at check-in, small but very clean & comfy rooms. lake view - it's worth it -ask for it. great restaurant nextdoors. less sweet lady at check-out but then it's about the money. we know where to go next time.

We were visiting Switzerland with our kids and grandchildren, and had decided to stay in Locarno for three days. The Geranio au Lac had good reviews and a great location - on Lake Maggiore and at most a block from the train station.
Our room was on the 6th floor overlooking the Lake - perfect. It comes with a bath/shower room and a separate toilet facility, each with their own sink. There was ample storage including an abundance of hangars! - rare. There was a balcony with two chairs and a table for us and our daughter to sit in the evening and enjoy the lake view. Terrific
The staff and front desk people were terrific, and provided guidance to restaurants that was very helpful.
The breakfast area was large with outdoor tables for two. Very nice. The breakfast was complete - breads, cereals, meats, cheeses, juices, boiled eggs, and fresh espresso coffee from a do it yourself automatic espresso maker that is also available all day long. Great for an afternoon coffee or cappuccino, latte, macciato, or even hot chocolate or something called choco-cafe.
If there is a complaint, it's that the room and I suspect, the hotel is not airconditioned - which seems to be standard in Switzerland for this class of hotel. However, it was late June, and leaving the sliding glass door open provided plenty of fresh cool air. I suspect farther into the summer season, the lack of a/c could dampen a stay (no pun intended).
I would not hesitate to stay there again.
