Hotel Gabbani, a unique Design Hotel in the heart of old town Lugano, opened its doors for the first time in 2012. A symbiosis between culinary and architecture is reflected in its geometry, spaciousness and furnishings, creating a tranquil, yet invigorating atmosphere. Domenico and Francesco Gabbani developed the concept for the hotel together with the Ticinese architect Sven Panzera , drawing inspiration from the colours and contours of fine food and drink. Here the present meets the past, with hotel rooms surrounding a medieval courtyard containing beautiful open arcades, part of the former convent. The central patio that hosts our fine food shops and bar on the ground floor has a delicatessen offering a wide range of specialities as well as a restaurant for gourmet delights on the first and ground floor. A fine buffet breakfast is served on the first floor, with delicious products from Ticino, with sausages, cheese, fruit and oven-fresh bread and croissants.

Really a neat hotel as part of a restaurant and food market. They are able to compartmentalize the hotel from the retail part of the business yet the restaurant and market are right on the premises...very convenient. Staff were very nice but some staff members were not fluent with English. Situated in the pedestrian part of town but auto parking was close by. Rooms were very modern and extremely comfortable. Great bathroom. VERY clean. Would return in a minute.

Quaint boutique hotel in a perfect central location. Room was very clean and staff extremely helpful. Great food in the popular hotel restaurant. Good value for money compared to other hotels in the area. No complaints.

We had a lovely three-day stay at Hotel Gabbani at the beginning of June. Our room was very tastefully decorated with an up-to-the-minute design sensibility, and the free (soda and water-filled) minibar was a treat. The bathroom was pretty amazing - beautiful marble, neat lighting, perfect shower. Staff were exceedingly friendly and helpful. The only downside is that the exterior is currently under renovation, which means that construction takes place on weekdays. We hope this ends soon, because it must be taking a toll on all concerned. Staff did their best to make up for this, though - we even got a free upgrade. We would come back even if construction was ongoing, because this is really a wonderful hotel!

We were rather alarmed on arrival to find the hotel almost invisible because of the scaffolding surrounding it. In fact the restoration work did not disturb us until the final morning of our four-night stay when the hammering began at 7am.
The room was very comfortable although there was only one chair. It was an internal room with a view of a stairwell from the window but perhaps this was just as well given the building work at the front. The bathroom was huge and worked very well.
We did have a problem with the air-conditioning which did not work for two of our four nights. There was more than one attempt to repair it (one of which resulted in the whole electronic system for our room failing, meaning we had to be given a physical key because the card no longer worked. On the morning of our third day, an electrician arrived and put things right. Although the staff were very concerned and could not have been more apologetic, we were given only a small bag of amaretti from the Gabbani shop as compensation for two of our nights being spent in uncomfortable heat (27 according to the room's thermometer at one point!). We realise that it was not the fault of the staff who were very kind but it should not have happened and the compensation could have been more generous...
The breakfast was very good with choice of buffet items and a cooked breakfast.
The location of this hotel is superb, a few steps from the funicular linking the twon and the station and just a short walk to the lake.
When the building work is finished (we were not warned about it when we booked, by the way), this will be an excellent choice for a stay in Lugano.

We stayed here for 3 nights. As for location you can't get more central. It's also quiet, although they were doing some work on the road beneath us, but only during the day so didn't trouble us. Parking isn't included but is very convenient and reasonably priced in the Motta car park (literally 1 min walk away). The restaurant at the bottom was wonderful (we only had breakfast and coffees there though). The staff were very helpful and accommodating. Room was small but very comfortable and very clean. A lovely little boutiquey style hotel, right in the heart of Lugano.

Hotel Gabbani is located in a little piazza in the historical center of Lugano. Don't let looks deceive you; you start off in a restaurant; go to the back and take the elevator up to reception. You've now entered a chic, beautifully designed and appointed small hotel. The staff are warm and welcoming, ready to answer any questions you may have. The breakfast is served in a light and airy dining room and the variety of foods should meet every taste. Our room was spacious by European standards, with a huge modern bathroom and walk-in rain shower. Electra, Louisa and the wonderful Sicilian bartender just made our stay even more enjoyable. Why stay at a hotel overlooking the lake, with busy traffic and inflated prices when you can have the warm hospitality of Hotel Gabbani only a few steps from everything you want to see. Please note; the funicular from the train station is under construction. The walk down from the train station is not difficult, but we suggest you take the "Funi" bus back up to catch either the train or the many buses. On Wednesdays, they offer an "appertivo" (basically a happy hour with a huge buffet of the best food). At the peak, the entire square was filled with happy locals; it's an incredible scene not to be missed. Also, their restaurant with limited menu produces some wonderful meals; on our last evening in Lugano, we enjoyed wonderful seafood, delicious local wine and the best dessert ever!!

We were really surprised by the Hotel Gabbani - in a good way of course. The hotel is relatively new, located bang in the city center.

It is based around an old monastery and forms part of a restaurant/shop which is the main business on the ground floor.

As such it's a really interesting combination- you don't really feel like you are in a hotel!

The rooms are your tight on space but the bathroom was huge. No windows opening directly into sky, however this was ok. Complimentary minibar of soft drinks which was nice after a long journey.

Super friendly and helpful staff, especially with explaining the car parking requirements (there is a public car park around 5min walk away).

Location superb - 2 min walk to the main piazza and lake front.

All round great value for money, quality and service. Will definitely stay again.

We only spent a few days in Lugano and wanted a reasonably-priced, centrally located hotel - Gabbani definitely fit the bill. An easy two minute walk to Plaza Reforma and the waterfront.

The rooms are named after different types of food, with contemporary decor to match. Our family of four had two rooms - Cafe & Mozzarella. Cafe (dk brown) was a big room overlooking the street with a soaking tub. Mozzarella (white) was a little smaller, but quieter, since it overlooked the interior courtyard.

A nice Continental breakfast was served in the second floor breakfast room. Contrary to some earlier reviews, hotel staff was available most of the times we passed through the lobby, and checked us out efficiently on a Sunday morning.

FYI: the funicular between the Lugano train station and town center (whose station is very close to Gabbani) is closed for the year - you will have to take a special "Funi Bus" from the train station, then a five minute walk from the closest bus stop to the hotel. A bit of a hassle, but workable.

Gabbani is definitely a landmark in Lugano, well known since decades. Everyday their sandwiches feed hundreds of businessmen and commuters, and on every Wednesday their aperitivo turns the ground floor into the liveliest place in town.
Not everyone knows that Gabbani is also a hotel, and this is actually a well hidden secret. The boutique, food&wine atmosphere is pleasant, the design is great, and the location is perfect for any season, also if you want to be quickly operational without a car.
The hotel rooms themselves are again well designed, furnished with good materials, AC and nice beds. Bathrooms are excellent. TV is modern but channels are mostly German or Italian speaking, however. Good noise insulation from the street, not totally aperitivo proof (Wed).
Staff is very friendly and makes you feel at home. But sometimes a detail reminds you it's not exactly the standard hotel. For instance, no night service, and reception is closed on Sunday. Actually, even after quite a few days stay, you still can't recall when there's someone or not at the reception. This could be improved.
Breakfast obviously emphasizes local products and there is plenty of choice, however day on day it's mostly the same again and again. Not an issue for a weekend but on a longer stay it may annoy some people.
Overall a very authentic and laid back place, with a trendy touch on Wednesdays. If you can afford it, and if you don't need a full-service hotel, it's a great choice, either for a weekend or a longer stay.

The hotel Gabbani is in a grey location - very close to the train stations ( by funiculaire) and in the center of the city. The people at the hotel were excellent, however, we had a few complaints.

Our bed only had two skimpy pillows (for 2 people), and no extra pillows or blankets. The Swiss-style comforter was very short - at 5 foot 6 inches, my feet were fully exposed. The bathroom was excellent.

Breakfast is provided in the "deli" on street level. It was quit cool during our stay, and with the temperature in the 50s (f), the doors were open to the deli, and it was downright cold during breakfast. After complaining 2 days in a row, there was finally heat on the 3rd day.

All in all, it's a very nice place to stay. Lugano, and it's people, make it a wonderful place to visit. We had one of the smallest rooms (limone - #23) - maybe the larger rooms are better.
