Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

I have been staying at Hotel de l'Ours over many years, since about 1996. It is quite a basic hotel but comfortable and the restaurant is really good. It is so easy to get around, either walking down to the city centre or going on trams all over the city including direct to the station. I find it friendly. It's best if you speak French, although some staff do speak good-enough English. Really good value for money. Can be a bit hot and noisy in the summer. I have recommended it to many friends and colleagues, mainly those working for Lausanne University as it is quite handy for that.

Good location but the hotel is showing it's age. The room was clean and the staff friendly (I got to the hotel quite late so it was actually the restaurant staff that checked me in.) On a busy street and even with the window closed you hear quite a bit. If you're not a sound sleeper bring ear plugs or avoid this hotel.

Convenient for the metro, descent location for most things. Rooms are small but clean and perhaps could do with AC as it’s too noisy to open windows. The staff are just incredibly rude and everything is too much trouble for them. Why go into the hospitality business if customers are a major inconvenience? They wanted to give me a bill before I had even ordered and when I asked about breakfast I was apparently an idiot.

I left a nice and rather expensive shirt in this hotel, so I called to ask if they could send it to me. I did not receive it so I had to call back no less than 3 times. Every time they said they would take care of it, but it was a waste of my efforts as I never got it back.

I would have preferred for them to just indicate not to do offer this service. I felt completely taken unseriously.

If you don't leave anything behind, the place is very centrally located in Lausanne.

I got a single room the size of a shoe box. There was no ceiling fan. The bed was placed directly under the window and when opened it took 10 cm of a small bed. The first night was awful. I could not extend into bed. The morning after breakfast was 15 min delayed. I tried to talk to the staff about any room move or just a recognition of the problem. They denied everything.

The night after, I had to move the bed out of the window. Here I found mold along the wall. I again tried to talk with the hotel and the manager and they would still not acknowledge the problems. When I was checking out, the hotel staff got angry at me because I didn't wanted to hide my dissatisfaction of the experience.

I NEVER NEVER USE THIS HOTEL

The location is good, just across the L'Ours Metro Station, 10 minutes to old city (walk). Not very friendly stuff, we had to ask the transport pass, even was included in room-price. The entrance in the hotel is not marked, you can see only the restaurant name, for the hotel you have to find the back-door of the restaurant. It was a small and noisy room at the 3rd floor (the elevator works till second one). Good but very expensive restaurant, they could offer some discount to the hotel customers, but this is Switzerland!
Even with few rain reprises, Lausanne seemed to me one of the most romantic Swiss cities, full of up-and-down beautiful narrow streets, small and large plazas, with old wells and colourfull statues!

On arrival to a hotel, I always check the bed. The duvet cover was washed, but stained, including one large ink stain. There are also small visible stains under the sheet I am trying not to think about.

The rooms are very warm (winter) and the temperature cannot be regulated.

All of this I could have accepted for a budget hotel In Lausanne.

But at around 8pm, the noise started. It’s not that loud, but it’s constant and sounds like a faulty fridge motor or a concrete drill. The floor is vibrating and it sounds like it’s coming from the pipes. I called reception, I went down to reception, was told technicians will look into it. Nothing.

It is almost 10:30pm and it is still going. It is somehow quieter with the window open and the traffic noise.

There will be no sleep tonight.

The location is great indeed: walking distance to the city centre (please note that Lausanne is all up-and-down, so when you go down, then you have to climb back up:-) and the tube station Ours is literally at your feet. It is clear that rooms have been recently redecorated and renovated, but materials were probably not too good, and some pieces are already broken or not so well fixed from the start. Staff is kind, but forget to check in before midday, and midday might be a problem too, as they are all busy in the restaurant. In short: location and prices are good, rooms are simply ok and organization has to be improved. But all that said, the overall experience is not too negative. And you can always have a great cappuccino and fresh croissants in the café at the opposite corner...

Hotel de l'Ours was clean, near the city center, near CHUV. The subway is just across the street and the train station is within walking distance. The only minus was hearing the other guests. It has a shared kitchen and laundry room.
