The city of Lausanne stands on a hill and has steep, narrow streets, so strong muscles are required, particularly for the uphill climb to the cathedral, the most important Gothic monument in Switzerland. Window-shop in the bric-a-brac and antique shops or take a breather in one of the numerous bistros and bars, or along the lovely promenade of the former fishing village of Ouchy, in the Musee de la Photographie, which is worth a visit, or at the Swiss Cinematheque (with its picture archive of famous Europeans) or Olympic Museum (the only one in the world).

The hotel is very clean, rooms are sufficiently spacious and the staff was super friendly. My favorite part was the large and delicious breakfast buffet. The location is not exactly central to Lausanne, but still easy to reach with public transport. Overall, I would highly recommend.

This was my second stay at Hotel Jeunotel. I originally came back because I knew the cost was as cheap as you could find in Switzerland and I felt safe staying there. The staff was extremely helpful, nice and spoke at least 4 languages which is especially nice.

We stayed here during the month of August during the large Volley Ball Tournament which goes on annually just a kilometer or so away from the hotel. The hotel was fully booked but it never was crowded for us.

The first misconception about this hotel is that it is a hotel. It is first a hostel, with about 60 other hotel rooms for people to stay. Taking into account that it is a hostel, the accomodation is quite nice. It still has the feeling of a hotel, but more of a 2 star hotel with the extreme basics.

The second misconception is that the hotel is near Ouchy. It is actually about 5 bus stops away in the near by location of Vidy at bus stop #2 Bois De Vaux. The bus ride is about 5 minutes and not complicated at all. It takes a simple 2 minutes to arrive at the hotel. Just make sure you grab a day bus pass for 7CHF.

Yes the hotel has cement walls and floors. The shower is just a shower next to the toilet but the room is quite large and even includes a refrigerator. If you assume you are touring the area, it is perfect for sleep, breakfast and leaving. There is only a small basic television but lots of room for your belongnings.

Breakfast is basic but what you get at any other hotel. This is a basic hotel breakfast and not much different than what you would find at other more costly hotels. Basics include baggette, ham, yogurt, butter, jam, orange juice, coffee, or espresso, and milk.

If you are looking for a more luxurious place to stay, this hotel is not for you. If you are on a budget and want to feel warm and welcome, this hotel will suit you just fine. The beds are comfortable and the sheets are very nice.

We were very happy with our stay here this time and found it to be a great price for Swiss standards. Feel free to lock up your bike as there is plenty of room for that here. Internet is available as well as food, drinks and a pool table if you choose.

If you are coming by car, you will find about 20 parking spaces available for your convenience. This is very nice since if you were staying in town, you would have to pay for such a parking spot. There was a guard as well. I'm not sure if they are there at all times, but it was nice to see people were watching out around the hotel grounds.

I stayed in a single room with a bathroom and was ok with my choice. The breakfast was included, which was a big plus for me. The hostel is located far from the city centre, restaurants and grocery stores, so having a hot breakfast was nice. The dinner was pretty basic with a little choice of dishes and quite expensive for a hostel. The location is a quiet cul-de-sac close to the lake. The bed was comfortable enough.

My major complaints are about the bathroom. There was heavy mold in the shower and musty smell. The shower was tiny, dirty and very uncomfortable. Plumbing in the washroom (the sink was in the separate room without a door) was also pretty bad - it was leaking all the time. I made a note at the reception but it was not fixed properly and continued to leak over the countertop to the floors. Overall, it was screaming of serious renovation...

WiFi is available in the lobby/restaurant only - are you serious? in the 21 century? in the hostel for youth?

This place has the charm of a prison, and beds to match. Our room had not been cleaned from the prior guests and there was rotting food in the closets. It has a serious institutional vibe with metal frame beds and concrete floors, walls, ceiling. We have stayed in many other hostels and this one was by far the worst. Long way from train station, but close to the lake. Lots of students here--that's ok, but expect a bit of noise in the evening.

I am a Swiss resident so maybe my opinion is based on the consistent quality that you find here, but we were disappointed with this hostel.
I was travelling with my boys by bike and had stayed several nights at other official Swiss Youth hostels on the way. All were better and cheaper than the this one.
As an example, for just Sfr 10 more ($7) than the nights lodgings for the 3 of us in Lausanne, we stayed in Fiesch with half-board and free access to the swimming pool! Quite a difference.
Local motels (in Crissier) also offer prices for Friday and Saturday night stays that are lower than at this hostel, and you get a shower in your room and non-bunk beds.

We stayed at the Jeunotel In June 2004 for 6 days. The rooms contain very basic facilities: the floors are concrete; the small bathroom contains a toilet, basin and shower; there is a small room containing a fridge, sink and shelf; there is a low built in shelf behind the beds. The room is quite spacious in comparison to other hotel rooms so we had no problems storing our suitcases. However, there was no heating and I found the rooms to be cold. The main problem was that there were school groups staying there at the same time so it was quite noisy. Given the place is a hostel, it is likely to have school groups staying there. The breakfast offered consists of cornflakes and another type of cereal, toast, jam, ham and cheese, tea, coffee and juice.

There are only 2 English channels on the television: MTV and the news.

The internet facilities offered were expensive, so I didn't use them

There are laundry facilities available (you need to ask for the key at the front desk).

You need to catch a bus to get there from the heart of Lausanne, which means the travel costs can add up. I can't remember the cost but you do have to pay with each trip. The hotel is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the main road, where the buses stop.

The Olympic Museum is close by. We didn't visit it but we did visit the caravan park that was next to it. There is a small deli/shop selling basic food staples. There is also a cafe serving food and drinks. It has outdoor seating by the lake and you can see the french mountains on the other side of the lake.

Next time I would stay in a place more centrally located - it might cost more but you save on time (and the small cost) with transport and the facilities might be better.

Pros: of course, the main reason to visit this place is the price. If you just need to overnight and leave early in the morning, it's a perfect place for it, even with a nice basic breakfast. You have enough parking spots, separated with a barrier. Wi-Fi is also good, working is not a problem. Nice and young atmosphere, with some activities such pool playing, children area and much more.
Cons: we had a double room with our own facilities. Lack of light, no full height mirror, bad sound absorption. Don't expect a lot and be ready for the basics. If you are young and energized, maybe it's a nice place for you to meet new people.

A group of 26 adults and students spread across two floors in groups of 1 - 4 people can be a challenge but this hostel (which is linked to the one we came from in Sion) was great at accommodating us.
Our rooms were allocated quickly and everyone settled in. We had space to practice and rehearse for our choir performance that evening. There was food and drinks if we needed to purchase them.
It felt so open and spacious, despite the amount of people there. The hammocks were great and well used by our group as well as the outdoor furniture where we could soak up the sun.
Breakfast was generous and catered for all our dietaries. There was plenty of it and the hours you could serve yourself were great for our group.
We could easily walk from here to the bus stop and then the train station, where we could explore some more. The hostel gives out free passes to it's guests - brilliant.
My room was a large queen futon style bed with plenty of space, tight but good shower and a separate area for brushing teeth and getting ready. Rooms felt secure.
I'm not able to comment on the price but told it's a little expensive so do your homework.
If you're on a bike - ask about where to store it.
They allowed us to store 36 large luggage items for a day while we did one last performance - it filled the entire room.
Disabled access is good if you're on the ground floor.
There is some parking out the front but most people seem to make their way on foot.
Highly recommend.

We stayed here for a few nights on a tour across a few European countries. By comparison to the previous hostel we'd stayed in, it was excellent, but there were some areas that left a little to be desired. The hostel's location certainly isn't city centre, but you are given a free public transport card which allows fairly easy access to the town via the 25 bus. The location of the hostel is only a few minutes away from the shore of Lake Geneva and the roman ruins of Lousonna and lots of sports facilities so if that's your thing, you'll not mind being less than central.

The look of the hostel is very grey and concrete. The private rooms are quite large, but without much of a view and I found ours rather dark and didn't feel like it was entirely clean. It was good to have our own shower and television though after several days in a worse hostel.

The communal area around reception has sofas and tables and a few computers, and was always full as this is the only area with wifi coverage. There is a bar area and beers available, but it seemed strange that this was never manned and you had to ask the receptionists for your beer.

Finally, the breakfast was a good bonus as food is very expensive in Switzerland. No hot options, but you can start the day on cereals, bread, ham and cheese, jams and nutella with coffee and juice. Certainly enough to get the day off to a start.

I would conclude that for the money, in an expensive country, there's not a lot to complain about, but you have to know that the hostel isn't central and isn't as sociable as some I've been to.

I spent 7 days at the Youth Hostel.
The positive points:
+ Even though It is located quite far from the centre with the free pass for public transport that they provide, you can easily reach the centre of lausanne (bus + metro).
+ The breakfast was very good and filling. Definitely worth it. They even one day let us have breakfast earlier than it was scheduled because we had to leave vary early that day.

The negative points:
- It was not very clean. The toilet seat as you can see from the pictures was not clean and remained as it was for 7 days...
- The wifi is only available in the common room and evn there it is very slow.
- Overall it was very expensive (85 francs for a single room) but it is switzerland so you expect everything to be expensive.
- The pillows were very flat and towels were not provided.
