Stayed for 1 night as a stop over. Our room had 2 single beds and these were quite comfortable. The room had everything we needed and we also appreciated the free drinks in the minifridge as well as the complementary apples and coffee in the lobby area. The hotel location is right in the middle of the Niederdorf area of Zurich - it's where you can find countless restaurants and lots of nightlife. The windows did keep out most of the street noise but in the summer I might suggest asking for a room that doesn't face the street if you like to keep your windows open. It wasn't an issue in October, but there is activity outside way past midnight.
Breakfast was good - eggs were fresh and the ladies in the kitchen kept the place in order. There is only 1 coffee machine so this can get backed up when everyone arrives at once. The breakfast room is small and this is only an issue if too many people decide to eat at the same time. Front desk staff were very helpful and it is easy to store luggage after check out. The hotel is easy to find and is about an 8 minute walk from the train station.

Dear SRfromMA, Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful review! We're delighted to hear that you had a comfortable stay and enjoyed the amenities like the free drinks in the minibar, complimentary apples, and coffee in the lobby. It’s great to know our central location in the heart of the lively Niederdorf area added to your experience. I appreciate your tip about street-facing rooms in summer and will certainly share your feedback with future guests. We’re also happy to hear you enjoyed breakfast and that our team kept everything in order. Your note about the coffee machine and breakfast room size is valuable, and we’ll keep it in mind as we continue to improve. It was a pleasure to have you as our guest, and we hope to welcome you back on your next visit to Zurich! Warm regards, Laura-Lou Di Lauro Receptionist, Hotel Alexander

We stayed at the Alexander twice, and the inconsistencies took it from a five-star to a four star.
First, the location is excellent. It is an easy walk from the train station and right on the bustling Neiderdorfstrasse, a cobbled street just a block from the river Limmat, with shops, restaurants, and nightclubs all around. Although both rooms offered ear plugs, noise was never a problem for us on either occasion. The staff were delightful and very helpful.
Breakfast was excellent: eggs, meats, muesli and cereals, fruit, croissants, and a variety of pastries. Note that some of the rooms on the second floor are quite close to the breakfast room.
The room was fairly small, but typical for European city hotels. It came with a small fridge which was generously stocked with a complimentary mini-bar. The beds were comfortable, and the bathrooms were both modern and well-appointed.
The inconsistencies were somewhat minor, but worth noting. One room in which we stayed had a shower only; the other had a deep tub. One room had an espresso coffee machine, and the other had no coffee maker. If either of those features are important to you, you should request them when you make the reservation.
In sum, however, we both enjoyed the Alexander and would stay there again.

The location of this small hotel is nothing short of perfect, on a lively pedestrianized street full of eateries and only a 12-minute walk from the train station. (Just don't confuse it, as I briefly did, with the Alexander Guest House.) The desk staff is lovely, and there are free drinks and apples in the lobby all day. My room was not large, but it was thoughtfully designed, with lots of useful surfaces and hooks, and even though it faced the street, it was quiet. Bedding was comfy, shower was excellent, as was the air conditioning. Breakfast is free (with plenty on offer), as is your first foray into the minibar. I will definitely choose this hotel again when I return to Zurich. One warning for travelers: Swiss electrical outlets require a special adapter (not the one for EU plugs; the hotel will loan you one if necessary), and while in theory the outlets allow three plugs at once, in practice it's impossible to plug in more than one thing when using an adapter.

I'll start with the small quibbles. The room is small, which is to be expected in Zurich, and the mattress a bit firm and low. The price seems high in absolute terms, but for Zurich it is a solid value.

Now the good stuff.

The location can't be beat, in the heart of old town, 7 minutes pulling suitcases from the train station.

We were allowed to check-in early, we let them know about our arrival time weeks prior.

Marc, who is often at the front desk is exceptionally helpful. A real asset.

The room was a bit small, but we only stayed for 2 night. It was spotlessly clean and had a great shower and fast wifi. That's really all we cared about.

We were on the 3 floor overlooking the main street and had no issue with the noise from the street, though we were there only for Wednesday and Thursday nights.

The breakfast is simple but everything was delicious and of a high quality. great bread and the eggs were made in small batches and frequently replenished. The young lady who takes care of the breakfast room was very efficient and kind.

The airconditioning was not really needed our first day but it seemed to be working the second day keeping the room around what we would guess to be 23C or 74F. Certainly pleasant.

We would absolutely stay here again.

Beware that this hotel does NOT have true AC even though the website says it does. They have a water cooled system that only works when it's above ~77F (~25C). The rooms get VERY hot and opening the windows isn't an option because of the noise and people smoking outside. We asked about the lack of AC after our first night and was told the above. They did offer us a fan which we accepted and while that did help it still wasn't enough to cool down the room at night. So we slept poorly every night we were there.

The location was convienent (close to sights and the main train station), the staff was friendly and the breakfast was good but the seating area for breakfast was small and filled up quickly.

For us, the positives weren't enough to offset how hot the rooms got and the poor quality of sleep. We would not stay here again and I think it's unfair and misleading of the hotel to claim they have AC when it only works in certain conditions.

Dear ccfierro, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your stay at ***Hotel Alexander. We are pleased to hear that you found our location convenient and our staff friendly, and that you enjoyed our breakfast offerings. Regarding the air conditioning, we appreciate your concerns and would like to provide some context to help clarify the situation. Our hotel is housed in a building that dates back to the 16th century and is a listed property in the city of Zurich. Due to this status, there are strict regulations regarding structural changes, including the installation of air conditioning systems. After extensive discussions with city authorities, we were permitted to install a water-cooled system. This system is designed to activate when external temperatures exceed 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit), which is suitable for most warm conditions we experience here in Zurich. During your stay, the external temperatures were unusually cool for the season, ranging around 15 degrees Celsius (59 Fahrenheit) during the day, which is why the air conditioning system was not operational. However, we strive to accommodate our guests' comfort in all weather conditions, which is why we offered fans and had discussions about turning off the heating in your room. We understand that these measures were not sufficient for your comfort, and we regret any discomfort you experienced. Your feedback is invaluable to us as we continue to improve our guest experience. We believe in being environmentally responsible and operate our systems accordingly, but we also want to ensure our guests are comfortable. If you choose to stay with us again, we would be more than happy to discuss room options that might offer a quieter environment with less exposure to external noise, making it more comfortable to keep the windows open if needed. Thank you once again for your visit and for your candid review. We hope to have another opportunity to host you, under more comfortable circumstances. Warm regards, Laura-Lou Di Lauro Receptionist, ***Hotel Alexander

We visited Zurich in March and stayed at the Hotel Alexander. My Mother has mobility issues and this hotel was fabulous as it was a stones throw from everything, shops and restaurants on our doorstep and a choice of trams within a five minute walk.
The hotel welcome was friendly and the receptionist was swift in checking us in and very informative, our rooms clean, with a coffee machine (as requested) and free drinks, all an added bonus as was the use of portable wifi which came in very handy when we were out on our travels.
The reception also had a help yourself coffee machine and fruit. On our floor we also had a water cooler and fruit, which all added to a great stay.
Breakfast was a good choice of continental with fruit juices, fruit, meats and salad, tea and coffee and a hot offering of eggs and bacon.
Defiantly recommend for a comfortable stay and great location.

We stayed here a few nights right after Christmas. The location of the hotel is terrific, it is close to restaurants and shops and a short walk to the train station. It is a 2 minute walk to the famous restaurant Swiss Chuchi which always had a line out the door.
We had a room on the 1st floor facing the street. The room itself was small but comfortable for two people and their luggage. It was very clean and the bathroom was good as well. The windows were surprisingly VERY good as when they were closed it was soundproof. We did open them at night to let in the fresh air as we like to sleep in a colder room and then we could hear the people from nearby bars.
We thought for the price that included breakfast it was a good hotel and we would recommend it.

This hotel was booked by our tour operator and what a great option it was. It is a small, 'boutiquey type hotel', centrally located to most things - the main railway station an easy 10 minute walk away, restaurants at its doorstep and the centre of Zurich. The room was a very good size, with space to put suitcases without tripping over them (always a bonus) and the bathroom, small but functional(BYO soap). The facilities in the room were very good - excellent shower, comfortable beds, a safe, a bar fridge and as an added bonus, the first of each drink was complimentary. The air con was okay.
The reception area was relatively small, but staffed by friendly and welcoming staff on all occasions. Drinking water and a supply of fruit was complimentary. The breakfast room was small, but offered a very good selection of especially cold options - cereal, yoghurts, fruit, pastries, salads, bread rolls.
Highly recommended and would not hesitate to stay there again if in Zurich.

We stayed in the hotel Alexander twice - in the beginning of our trip and in the end. First time we've got upgraded to a king bed room, and the second time it was a standard double room.
The king bed room is facing away from the street while the standard room is facing the street. It wasn't too much of a problem, you can barely hear noise from the busy street below.
Both rooms were rather compact but manageable, after all it's a big and expensive city.
A very decent breakfast is provided from 7 am every morning. All drinks in the mini-bar are free which is very much welcome after a warm day. You can ask for a wi-fi hotspot at the lobby - it worked much better than the one we brought with us.
The hotel is easy walk from the train station or you can take a tram (two stops).

We're also pleased that the Wi-Fi hotspot we provided worked well for you. Thank you for choosing Hotel Alexander, and we hope to welcome you back on your next visit to Zurich! Regards Your Hotel Alexander Team

In Switzerland, the plug system of the "Type-C" and "Type-J" standards is used. In the Hotel Alexander and Alexander Guesthouse we already have international sockets in the rooms. In addition, we can also lend you further sockets at the reception.
