We’d stayed here before pre-Covid, and it lived up to our memory. Aside from the obvious benefits of a brilliant location, the staff are unfailingly friendly and professional. As a couple of people have noted, you need to take note of room size when booking. Our room was compact but comfortable and well-equipped. Let’s face it - when you’re in Amsterdam you want to be out and about, so we didn’t need a spacious room. There’s also a comfortable lounge by Reception, so if you want a relaxing sit down with a drink the option is there.

Dear Mr Kemp, Thank you for choosing our hotel for your stay in Amsterdam, and for taking the time to leave us a feedback. We greatly appreciate the five star review. Firstly, we would like to thank you for your kind words towards the staff. We go to great lengths to lend a hand to our guests whenever possible, and we deeply appreciate that our efforts are recognized. It it is wonderful you could take advantage of our location. Many guests choose to stay with us because of our proximity to some of the most well-know cultural attractions in the city. Nonetheless, the closeness to such an important tourist area does not affect how peaceful the neighborhood is. It is a pleasure to read you enjoyed the quiet aspect of this area as well. Once again, thank you for your kind words. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back at Jan Luyken Hotel. Kind regards, Maarten Benschop General Manager

This lovely hotel is located on a quiet street in the museum district-the Rijksmuseum and VanGogh museum are only a few blocks away. The rooms are nicely decorated, quite comfortable and a good size. Some rooms have a balcony where you can sit with your morning coffee or a glass of wine enjoying the location. Bathrooms are large. Breakfast, which is provided at an additional cost, is quite tasty, the staff is very friendly and efficient. I have stayed at this property three times and would definitely return.

The Jan Luyken hotel is a lovely retreat on a lovely side street that is quiet yet near the activity of Museumplein. My room was comfortable, tastefully decorated, extremely clean, well-appointed, and had a captivating view of Amsterdam rooftops and the Rijksmuseum. I appreciated the comfortable bed and the bathtub! The hotel’s pay-breakfast (very good) and complimentary wine/cheese hour were a very nice addition; the shared spaces are also pretty and inviting (especially the outdoor courtyard— a great place to relax). The hotel staff were very helpful, pleasant, and attentive. This was a great place to come back to after a day of exploring the city. The location is great—the street itself is quiet and pretty, though it is very near public transport, nice walking neighborhoods, and museums. I would stay here again.

Dear guest, Thank you for choosing our hotel for your stay in Amsterdam, and for taking the time to leave a five star review. While we do get our fair share of positive reviews, it is not always that we receive five stars to every aspect of our hotel. It is truly a delight to see you enjoyed your time with us. Firstly, we are glad you found the decoration of the rooms and public areas matched your taste. Our team has put great effort into making the hotel stylish, but all the same warm and welcoming. It’s a pleasure to know guests appreciate it. It is also a pleasure to read the cleanliness of the hotel met your expectations, and that you were able to enjoy our breakfast. Our house keeping and kitchen staff work very hard to ensure the high standard our guests expect. Moreover, we are delighted to hear you found our staff friendly and approachable. We go the extra mile to provide our guests the best experience possible, and your kind words do not go unnoticed. Moreover, it is a pleasure to see you gave our location five stars. It is indeed very convenient, especially for those looking to visit the major museums Amsterdam offers, such as the Van Gogh Museum and the Moco Museum. Once again, thank you for your kind words. Should you ever find yourself in Amsterdam again, we would love to welcome you back. Kind regards, Maarten Benschop General Manager

I stayed in a Small room on the top floor. Starting with the positives, the room had a nice design with ample space for one. The table was a decent size for eating/reading, the safe seemed robust, and there was a fridge and enough storage space. The bathroom had a large surface for toiletries, a hanging towel rack, and a large sink that had the tap properly over the sink rather than close to the edge. I didn't have any issues with hot water, the shower head could be detached, and the shower panel could swing into the bath. The skylight window couldn't be opened, but there was a vent that cooled the room well in the wet weather. I could hear some rain, but the hotel itself and street were quiet. Then the door unlocking via your phone is easier than fishing for a card, and I didn't have any issues with the lift. Finally, the lobby looked the part, the staff were all helpful and friendly, and the location was excellent for the museums and going into the centre.

Moving on to the negatives, there were hairs in the sink and crumbs on some surfaces when I arrived. I don't think the kettle was cleaned either. I found the pillows uncomfortable and an inadequate height. One was too low and two was too high. Furthermore, I was warm in the duvet because turning down the temperature of the room actually makes it warmer (I guess it's a heater, not an air con). The first night I felt like I was just laying there with my eyes shut the whole time. Things improved by putting spare towels under the pillow, but I was still waking up. The breakfast selection was basically bread, a bowl of mixed fruit, and possibly some cheese and what looked like salmon pieces. There were no bowls from what I could see, and the plate size was quite small. I ended up taking a plate up to my room and buying my own food for breakfast. I have a lean build and found getting into the shower awkward. The shower itself was mounted in the middle of the bath, not at one end, so you're sort of standing on the curves of the bath. The doorway to the bathroom didn't feel very big either, so I wouldn't recommend a Small room if you're on the larger side. The bathroom bin was rather small if you ate in your room, and the cleaner annoyingly kept moving it to the corner where it was inaccessible. Lastly, one day the cleaner took away my hand towel and didn't provide a replacement, but the cleaner the next day did.

I can't comment on the other facilities (e.g. the library, garden, gym) as I didn't use them.

We appreciate your kind words about our helpful and friendly staff. We are sorry to hear about the issues you experienced during your stay. I researched just about every hotel in Amsterdam, and ended up booking this one since it checked all the boxes. Air conditioning, a bathroom that had an actual door (what's up with Amsterdam hotel rooms having clear bathroom doors?!), close to sites, updated and modern. I booked the small room (which was called something else when I booked, they have since updated their room names). This was NOT the smallest room on the website, either. After booking that room, I inquired about upgrading to the medium room that has a balcony. I was told that I could do that, no worries at all. I was told the price. Told he would ask his colleagues how to process the price difference. I was under the impression I was all set, even after reading all of our messages after I just got home.

Checked in. Was informed we were in the same small room. I mentioned the conversation and messages. They apologized but said they are now sold out of that room and they aren't sure why it was never processed appropriately. Our room was a literal shoebox (hence why I wanted the upgrade because I was afraid of what was shown on the website was not what I would end up with). There was no bumped out window like shown on the website. It was like a cruise ship room. The toilet touched the shower (which has a nasty shower curtain and floods). There is ONE tiny garbage can in the room. Our room wasn't cleaned properly as there was an empty water bottle behind the coffee maker at check in and hair in the tub. There was not room for our luggage. It was the smallest room I've ever been in and was definitely not 15-20 square meters like the website says. Again, this is what I was afraid of, and why I wanted the larger room.

The common areas are pretty, the free drinks and breakfast are nice, but there were dirty dishes and glasses all over all the time during our 4 night stay. There are no public garbage cans, so no one throws anything out. It's so weird. Morning 2 of our stay we were awoken by insanely loud and vibrating power tools, which were being used for something on the terrace (we were in a first floor room). The bike rentals were nice, gym small but adequate, the location was terrific and quiet, and the staff were as friendly as they could be. But, I definitely don't recommend this place for the price I paid.

Dear Summer, Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed and comprehensive review of your stay with us. We greatly appreciate our guests’ feedback. Firstly, we would like to thank you for choosing us in the first place and for sharing your comments on why you chose our hotel. We sincerely apologize for any disappointment you experienced regarding the room assignment. We sincerely apologize for the oversight made by our team regarding your room type preference. We understand that this caused inconvenience, and we deeply regret any negative impact it had on your experience. We take your feedback seriously and are taking immediate steps to discuss the issue with the hotel team and prevent this from happening again in the future. Additionally, we truly apologize for the misunderstanding we created through email when booking the rooms. We have recently updated the names of our rooms and we understand it has been confusing at times. The lack of communication is inexcusable, and we fully understand your frustration, thus we will be more attentive in the future. We acknowledge that the transition could have been better communicated and executed. Furthermore, we also understand some of our rooms are on the smaller side of the property, which is why we have updated the names to better fit their proportions also considering the monumental character of our building. Nonetheless, we are sorry to hear the room was not up to your and, frankly, our standards regarding cleanliness. Please be assured that we have thoroughly reviewed your concerns with our housekeeping team to understand the areas where we fell short. We have taken immediate action to implement additional quality control measures to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future. Moreover, we have just recently moved onto a new era for our hotel, in which our guests have everything included during their stay with us. This new concept has not come without its challenges, and we are currently working on improving the performance of our staff when carrying out certain new tasks. We have worked hard to provide spaces that are welcoming and inviting in the hopes that Jan Luyken becomes the home away from home for our visitors. Once again, we are deeply sorry for the oversight from our side regarding the maintenance of our living spaces. This is certainly not reflective of the high standards we strive to provide. Your feedback has reminded us of the importance of providing these essential amenities, and we appreciate you bringing it to our attention. Lastly, we deeply regret any inconvenience caused by the noise that disrupted your morning rest. Providing our guests with a peaceful and relaxing environment is of utmost importance to us, and we apologize for falling short of your expectations in this regard. To conclude with, we are happy to know that overall, you enjoyed our hotel’s prime location that you made good use of our bike rental service, which is always included in our guests’ reservation. It brings us immense joy to know that our staff were friendly and helpful, creating a positive experience and welcoming atmosphere. We will be sure to pay extra attention to perfecting the services we provide as much as possible. You can reach us at hello@janluykenamsterdam.com if you have any questions or would like to discuss with us. It would be an honour to welcome you back to our hotel in the future and provide you with better experience. Best Regards, Maarten Benschop General Manager

The main attraction of this hotel is its location in the leafy museum district. You are just around the corner from the Rjksmusuem and the Van Gogh, both fantastic destinations. For this position you pay a hefty premium ( 850E for 3 nights) even for a tiny, stuffy room - this was the smallest double I have ever slept in. Unfortunately, we overlooked the street outside which got very noisy in the dead of night for some reason, so opening the window was not an option. The final evening was the worst when two big shipping containers were crashed into position on the street outside at about 3am. In consequence we didn’t get a decent night’s sleep. The hotel itself is gloomy, with purple net curtains over every window and drab brown paint everywhere, even on the ceilings. Staff were friendly and the breakfast was relaxed.

Pros
• It's a small-medium sized hotel so easy to get around and feels like you're there with the same familiar faces.
• Room decor and bathroom are updated and have a good vibe, liked all the muted pastel colors and patterns everywhere you turned.
• Everything felt very clean when I got to the room!
• Rooms have operable windows AND a/c so you can pick your path based on how you're feeling (a/c came in handy during some hot days).
• Breakfast and snacks in the food room downstairs were great and nice to have throughout the day.

Could go either way
• The location:I really liked how quiet it was for being so close to main roads and lots of trams and you're a 5 minute walk from the city's biggest museums. The access to public transport in every direction was stellar. And being 2 blocks from Vondelpark was awesome. That said, it's kinda in a no man's land for food and drinks with not much close by. You'll have to walk 10-15 in any direction to really get some options.

Cons
• My shower was a tub shower (I'm used that, have one at home) but the wall was really high and getting in and out every day was an adventure. If you have knee/leg issues, check to see if there are any with lower walls.
• My room and corner of my floor smelled like sewage (several floors up); was told that's just pipes in Amsterdam and the solution was to come in my room and spray some febreze, which unfortunately only lasted a few seconds. Not sure if anyone else had this experience or something was up on my floor only. But it was very pungent the entire time I was there.
• Like others have mentioned, it's on the pricy side for the size of the room and what you get (but everything in Amsterdam is expensive in the summer).

Overall, good stay! Staff was friendly and felt extremely safe in this area.

Dear Jared, Thank you for taking the time to share a detailed review of your recent stay at Jan Luyken Hotel Amsterdam. We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed our hotel's unique vibe, cleanliness, room decor, breakfast and snack options, and staff. Our team works diligently to provide a memorable experience for all of our guests, and it is heartening to know that these aspects of our service met your expectations. We appreciate your comments regarding our location. We understand that the proximity to food and drink options is subjective and can vary based on personal preference. However, we are glad to know that the environment, access to public transport, and closeness to museums added value to your stay. We sincerely apologize for the challenges you faced with the high tub shower wall and the smell of sewage. Please be assured that we are taking these issues very seriously. We understand that these can have a significant impact on the comfort of your stay and we will address these issues promptly. We are also sorry to hear that you found our rates to be on the higher side. While Amsterdam can indeed be expensive, especially in the summer, we strive to provide excellent value for the cost, considering our unique offering and location. We eagerly look forward to the opportunity to host you again at our hotel in the future, aiming to provide an even more superior experience. Warm Regards, Maarten Benschop General Manager

We stayed for 4 nights and we are so glad we chose this hotel for our Amsterdam stay.
The location is great, peaceful spot but within a 5 minute walking distance of the Rijks Museum and the Van Gough Museum. Plenty of nice eating places within walking distance and a supermarket. Good public transport links too, we got the 397 bus from the airport and just had a 5 minute walk from the Museumplein to the hotel. Tram stops nearby too but we walked everywhere. A short walk through the Rijks Museum to access the canals and the city centre.
We were warmly welcomed when we arrived wet from the rain at 21:00hrs at night. The staff really make this hotel, Everyone we met was friendly and helpful. The hotel has a lovely, relaxed feel too it. There are living spaces to relax in downstairs and a nice outdoor space too. Lots of interesting things to look at dotted around the hotel. A lovely touch is that you can freely access hot drinks, soft drinks, wine, beer at any point included in the price of your stay. There are also snacks such as cookies, cake, sweets, cheese cubes available most of the time to help yourself to.
There is a lift, it is an old building so the stairs are steep. We had room 310 which had a lovely view of the street below and across to the roof of the Rijks Museum. Room not huge but big enough and we didn’t spend lots of time in there anyway. Big, comfy bed. Bath with shower over, plenty of hot water. Air con if needed. Kettle, tea, coffee. Safe.
When we checked in they emailed us a digital key to our room, the front door and access to information about the hotel and its services.
Breakfast was continental, juices, fresh bread, toast, pastries, fresh fruit, granola, cheese, meat, salmon. You could keep going back for more and we were never hungry, the staff kept everything replenished.
The staff kept our bags for us following check out so we could have one last walk around Amsterdam more easily.
Would highly recommend and if we ever went back to Amsterdam we would stay at this smashing hotel.

This is the most wonderful hotel unlike any I have ever stayed in before. It's beautifully decorated and feels sumptuous but not 'overdone'. The library, sitting areas , outdoor area and kitchen are wonderful spaces to relax, play board games, read, eat, drink or just 'be'. The staff are always on hand to help with anything but never intrusive. The whole place just feels wonderfully relaxed. The bedroom was lovely and decorated in a quirky and thoughtful way. Drinks and snacks were freely available at any time of day and the 'help yourself breakfast ' was plentiful. The perfect place for us to enjoy a short anniversary break and to thoroughly unwind.
You can get the 397 🚌 here direct from the airport to the Museumplein which is 2 minutes walk from the hotel. There is also a tram stop which will take you to the city centre in 10 mins otherwise it's a very pleasant 20 - 30 minute walk. The museumplein is 2 minutes away from the hotel.
I highly recommend this wonderful hotel.

Just returned from a fabulous five-day stay at this adorable and meticulously managed boutique hotel in the leafy museum district of Amsterdam. We liked being a bit away from the frantic center but within walking distance of everything. It’s a short stroll to the fantastic Vondelpark (with the Picasso sculpture) and the lively De Pijp neighborhood (with the fun Albert Cuyp market) and the charming Oud-Zuid neighborhood (home to the best Indonesian restaurant, Blauw—reservations essential). The tram stops a block away. Our room on the second floor was beautifully appointed (lovely mix of old and new) and had a gorgeous little balcony that we enjoyed very much. Only complaints are that the room didn’t have storage for clothes (a few drawers would be good) and the default breakfast brought to individual tables include meat. We suggest asking guests about their dietary preferences before bringing meat to the table at breakfast. The vegetarian breakfast we were brought on request was excellent. Oh, non-dairy milk options would be nice. All the hotel staff we encountered were great—friendly and professional. We look forward to staying here again on our next trip to Amsterdam!

Because we both have bad knees we are asking if the hotel has elevators?

Yes, the hotel has an elevator. If you stay in the second floor you will find a steep step to access some of the rooms directly in front of the elevator, just make sure you get help with your luggage if that is the case.

Do I need a converter for the outlets in the room ?

An adapter worked fine for my charging my cellphone, camera and running my laptop. If you have something like your own hairdryer or other item that needs to run on 120 volt then you need to plug the converter in also. It should mate to the adapter. If you don't you could fry your hairdryer or other appliance. Check each item to find out which, if any, need conversion. Everything I had worked on adapter alone. Hotel has hairdryers so you don't need your own unless that is a preference. Have a great time. I loved the hotel. Especially enjoyed relaxing on the patio with a drink at the end of the day. Amsterdam is awesome!

Does this hotel have bathrobes and slippers in each room?

You need to ask the front desk for everything. You also need to ask the front desk to replenish your room amenities regularly. Irritating that they expect you to ask them for things that you paid for. Some of the front desk employees (the female staff) are very irritable if not outright rude.
