Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I really enjoyed staying here. What I like most about this place is that it facilitates a good community, and it's easy to meet new people from other countries. The staff are very helpful, and they really do care about you. I had an amazing stay here.

I love the location, it's opposite Vondelpark. Rooms were pretty basic . They have a cheap luggage storage downstairs and space in your room under the bed. The bar had a really great vibe with amazing happy hours price and lots of people ready to meet others. Friendly manager and helpful staff.

The Flying Pig Uptown has a great location! Close to transport, an easy walk into the city and right next to Vondelpark and the Museum Quater. There are a lot of young people coming through - and only stay for one or two nights (keep in mind if that´s for you) The toilets were the size of an airplane toilet - so quite small, and you share with the whole floor. There is a kitchen, which you can use, so that´´ s really nice. I even made my own breakfast, before 8 am, where Flying Pig starts their breakfast. There is a bar at the hostel, which is open most of the day, and there is 2x happy hour. But the rooms were fine, and the bed. Eventhough you miss some privacy because the rooms are so open.

Less than an hour and I instantly regretted booking to stay here. I should have stayed at Via hostel like I intended. I actually paid £40 more to stay here and it’s one of my biggest travelling regrets and I’ve been to 20 countries. The description to get to the hostel wasn’t great. It was until I got off the bus from the airport. I managed to get on WiFi at the museum and and use maps so no harm no fowl in the end. I read the reviews about the stairs so I expected it. I also read the reviews about the lockers and the replies from the hostel saying they’d look into it. They didn’t change them. I brought a lock that would not fit. Even another person tried. So after climbing 4 flights of stairs I went down to reception and said my lock is too small what do I do. The Australian guy said we sell them €5. Which I believe to be expensive. I reluctantly said I’ll have one. Yes I was annoyed but in no way was I kicking off. He asked card or cash. I replied will I get a receipt using card and he said yes. Perhaps the next bit is what pissed him off. I was waiting because I thought he hadn’t given me the receipt but he had. I asked ‘oh have you given it to me? Sorry thanks’ then climbed 4 flights of stairs again. I spent about 10 minutes trying to use this lock to lock the locker. I tried different ways but it would not work. Eventually I gave up and went down 4 flights of stairs again and this time the woman who originally checked me in was on reception. I asked if I could get a refund because the lock doesn’t fit. At this point the Australian (I’m guessing because Kiwis are usually nicer) shouted at me ‘no! You started on me and now you’re starting on her!’. He said I was shouting and swearing. Yet nobody in the bar turned to look? Will CCTV show me getting irate? I asked ‘ what do you mean, I’ve just asked for a refund because it doesn’t work’? He just stared at me. The lady gave me the refund immediately no questions asked. Suggesting it’s a common occurrence? His problem was likely because I wasn’t smiling and I wasn’t impressed with the €5 charge plus exhausted from climbing up and down 4 flights of stairs 3 times in like 30 minutes. Now I’m sat in the room, exhausted and uncomfortable because he’s working the bar. I paid £40 for this. Adding to that they charged me city tax for 3 nights and not the 2 nights I’m staying. Yes I was booked in for 3 nights and I’m not expecting a refund but why am I paying city tax for the extra night if it is indeed city tax? I’ve paid €40 a night to be snapped at and uncomfortable. I DEEPLY regret this trip and booking here when I should have stayed at Via. I’ve stayed at lots of hostels. Some times multiple in the same city. I’ve even stayed at multiple hostels in London, Scotland and Liverpool which is my own country. I’ve only had one negative experience and that was in London when they charged me too little for the weekend and then wanted to charge me quadruple the price. I’ve even stayed at one hostel in Australia for months. Then returned! Never experienced this in my life. Do you seriously expect me to be jumping for joy climbing up and down the stairs because you have weird lockers? Congrats on ruining my trip.

Hi Katie, Firstly thank you for taking the time to share your experience its sounds frustrating and I hope at least writing this review has alleviated some of your negative feelings on this trip. It was never our intention to ruin your trip. In hindsight we could have walked up with you to assist you with attaching the padlock. It is not a usual occurrence that they do not fit, of course they fit and I'd be happy to share a video with you. The replacing of our cages is an ongoing thing and this due to some cages causing noise, it is not because that they can't be locked with a padlock. We are sorry to hear that in hindsight you would have preferred another hostel however it is located the south of Amsterdam whereas we provide a different competitive rate for our location in the heart of Museumplein, thus indicating the price difference you mentioned. City tax @ 7% and Tourist Tax is applicable to all reservations in Amsterdam and I'm sure this in the fine print of all third party site booking confirmations. This is a governmental tax tourists pay during their visit to benefit from municipal services. Lastly, in cases where we have availability and our guest is this uncomfortable with the stairs we do our best to try re allocate you to a lower floor on as many nights possible. If we are unaware of your upset to the stairs and rather argue over the padlock than ask for help we failed to have the opportunity to help. I'm glad you received a refund for the padlock. If you wish to share any further information please do contact us directly by email receptieuptown@bedsandbars.com Thanks again for your time, wishing you safe travels + take care. Flying Pig Uptown

I had booked beds in a 12-bed room, but my friend and I got a free upgrade to an 8-bed. The place was very clean and the staff was very friendly. In the wise words of my traveling companion: “I feel young and like I’m living life”. This is an accurate description of this hostel.

I had an unexpected situation that needed to travel immediately to Amsterdam. I had a mistake in reserving the date because I was in a hurry. Although my booking was refundable, the receptionist showed great understanding behavior and explained everything to me, and the manager behaved very professionally and accepted my situation. All the people were friendly, and it had an amazing environment that I think suits tourists, especially young ones because many guests looked like they came alone, but they made friends in the lobby there. It was clean and warm ( I went there at the end of November and it was really cold).

I arrived on a rainy day and i was completely wet and cold. The employers saw that and helped me a lot bringing my lugage up to my really cosy room so i could warm up quickly. That was maybe the best first impression i've ever got somewhere 😍 And also on the other days i had only postive moments, the hostel was clean and had a nice bar with a smoking room, i also Made a lot of friends during my stay, perfect for solo travelers!
